  • Junk silver is a great way to get your hands on low premium highly divisible fractional silver. It's the perfect hard money for day to day purchases, and served that role for over half a century.

It's fun to go back and watch these older videos and compare the prices. Online dealers are still asking about the same price for their junk silver even though silver is less than $21/oz currently. In this video it's over $25/oz. Junk silver should be way cheaper today but the increasing demand has made the premium creep ever higher.

Thank you for your video. Regarding 9:15, Kennedy half dollars from 1965 until 1970 have a composition of 40% silver. These are actually 40% silver-clad coins which are composed of an outer surface layer of 80% silver sandwiched over an inner core of 20.9% silver, the remainder is copper. In other words, their clad composition is a laminate rather than a homogeneous alloy. On the other hand, U.S. Mint 5 cent coins from 1942 until 1945 were composed of a homogeneous alloy of 35% silver + 56% copper + 9% manganese. Colloquially these are called "Silver Nickels" although ironically they contain no nickel at all.

I personally think the 1964 Kennedy half dollars gives the best bang for the buck as "junk" Constitutional silver. More than 400 million were minted and most were immediately hoarded so it's actually rare to find them circulated. I also stacked a fair amount of Franklin halves because I just love that coin and SILVER! About %20 of my stack are dimes and quarters just to have smaller fractions.

For junk, I mostly stay to foreign, because I can get it at spot. But also, for the Ike Dollars, from 1971-1976, there were Silver proofs, but also Silver UNCs. .400 fine, and .3162 ASW. Also, in 1976, there were .400 Silver proof and UNC Quarters, both in Bicentennial sets.

New comment on an older video - thank you so much for this one. I stacked a lot of 90% quarters in 2017 - 2019 but lost interest in them. Now that the ASE premiums are so high, I am looking for something else to add to my stack and coming back to 90%. It seems crazy now, but I was buying 90% for BELOW face in many cases, and some of the coins were in BU condition with no wear at all. Now that silver has heated up so much even the junk silver has increasing premiums. Your video got me thinking about "divisible" / fractional silver and how junk silver really fills that place in my stack. Thanks!

There are 40% BU-grade Silver Ikes (San Francisco Mint). These ran from 1971 to 1978. They were just not for regular circulation.
I know, because I have bought and owned them. They are not just proof-grade, although proofs also were struck.

That has always seemed really odd to me how $1 face lower denomination didn't have as much silver as a Dollar Coin . Does anyone know the story behind that? The whole system was based on the accurate divisibility , even the gold coins and the silver to gold coins.

Good video, but as far as getting the best deals on line, actually I get my best deals at actual coin stores. Premiums are too high on line (almost twice as much per coin). I even went to a coin show and was very disappointed in the prices which I found to be WAY over spot. Thats just my personal experience though.

I like war nickels.....1 dollar face value is 1.125oz of silver a war nickel is literally a nickel of silver and theres a benefit to the low purity. less of the silver is worn away.

I hope I can help them one day. Btw would it be better to reach out to the refineries than the LCS in selling my 90% silver?

I avoid buying older coins, as they will usually have less silver content - they're counting on the collector in us to buy Mercs instead of Roosevelts, or an even higher premium for Barber Dimes. It's remarkable - stack 20 Merc Dimes next to 20 Roosevelts,. I still want to get a roll of Barber Dimes, but I'm too tight-fisted to pay an extra 30-40 bucks a roll.
