My 50 cents. For me, the burnout is a natural result of doing things longterm without an ongoing satisfying feedback from the process. Having a goal helped me to build my routine, but it never helped with motivation. Probably, the opposite. I feel that you do not really have to have the specific goals to enjoy the process. These are barelly connected for me. I do not have to have a clearly defined and articulated goal to be able to enjoy an ice-cream. I do not have to have goals to be able to celebrate and enjoy every correctly read character, word or sentence. Happiness is that fuel for any voluntary activity. Take it away for a second and you get an immediate burnout. Fuel is burnt and you are out. Therefore, my learning is always build on things I enjoy. (Except for Anki, that is religious activity 😂) Of course there are people able to postpone their enjoyment and they are able to "swim underwater a bit longer without taking another breath". But why forcing myself, reading way above my level, grinding random vocab I will hardly see and risking a burnout, if every character understood gives so much pleasure.
Beautifully put and very true for reading! For me, the hard thing about learning Chinese at an intermediate level is that you have long stretches where you don't have a sense of progress. When it comes to listening, I found that I benefit from listening to material that I don't fully understand. After some time, my listening improves and I feel I've made progress, which really is similar to a workout.
这对我的听力特别有用!我可以轻轻松松听一听这级别的中文,却有时候会有没听过的成语什么的。特别好。
你今天心情很好!☺️
