Honestly, I want to say retirement has done so well for Eli Manning. I remember him just getting hated on all day every week. Even with 2 rings. Now I feel like everyone loves him. I know for sure I do enjoy him. He has some comedy chops and has good analysis of the game. I think a lot of his haters turned that hate into respect after he retired. Or maybe I'm just speaking for myself 🤣. Love the Manning bros.

Speaking as a SAN DIEGO Charger fan: The Spanos family are terrible owners and the Manning's knew this. Ever since that draft, the Manning's have been proven correct over and over again. As a kid, I didn't like Eli, just like all of San Diego. But after learning about ownership and looking back over the years, they 100% made the right decision. 🖕 Dean Spanos
The list of reasons is long but short explanation is, Chargers ownership is terrible and the Manning's knew better than let Eli's career waste away here.
San Diego doesn't care about the Chargers anymore. But we have the Padres who have one of the best owners in the game! He cares about the team and the city.

I was young in 2004 when Eli was drafted only being ten years old so I have no memories of what was going on at this time and what the media must’ve been saying when his agent told the Chargers that he wouldn’t play for them and that if they picked him he’d sit out the season rather than playing. I imagine that he probably got a lot of criticism for that at the time but I think his dad stepped in to take the blame for it to try and keep it away from Eli according to comments Eli made in recent years after he retired. The way Eli spoke about it his dad wasn’t the one pushing for him to not go to San Diego and he made that choice but his dad portrayed things as being his fault to try and keep the heat from falling on Eli which is really cool for his dad to do if that’s the case.
But looking back at the events of those times I can’t say I blame him for not wanting to go there. That place was a dumpster fire for young QBs at that point in time and a huge risk for a developing young QB to be. Obviously the glaring example would be what happened with Leaf but that isn’t totally fair because a lot of what happened with Leaf was also caused by he himself but it would still be a big red flag for a guy like Eli. Leaf did a lot towards his downfall there but at the same time he got tosssed to the wolves and the team played hot potato with him which didn’t help his chances. And then they bailed. Then you see them kinda do the same deal with Brees. They bring him in as the starter and he gets a full season where he doesn’t play great but the next season when he’s still struggling they yanked him for Flitie mid season and then tossed him back in. Of course we now know the following season Brees started playing a lot better.
So going there you know you’re basically jumping into a QB controversy from the start. And the fact they’re drafting you already says they aren’t going to commit to you long term to let you develop through your struggles. You’re seeing them do it to guys back to back and have no reason to believe they won’t do the same thing to you. Going to NY he entered a completely different environment where he didn’t get tossed in immediately and when he did get thrown in and had some difficulty had a veteran who pushed the team to leave you in, an extremely selfless move, for your betterment to develop. Eli didn’t really see a solid stat season until the season following that first superbowl win. And based on the time frame of the Chargers he might not have even been starting that season in year 4. They moved off Leaf after 3 seasons and at this time we’re replacing Brees after three seasons. NY was a team that gave Eli time to find a groove that he probably wouldn’t have gotten in SD. So obviously hindsight helps but he really did make a good choice at the time.

Eli lost a lot of respect from the league before he ever set foot in it. There has been players way better than him that have been drafted number one and they were not as entitled.

I watched something about that draft and and the Giants really wanted Roethlilsberger if they couldn't get Eli while San Diego preferred Rivers, so they took a huge risk drafting Rivers and hoping a trade happened because if it didn't, they would have missed out on both of their top two choices.

I want to know why Eli didn’t mention him not wanting to go to San Diego? Made it seem like it was the organizations decision. Yeah his dad didn’t want him going there either but it’s not his choice so I’m reality Eli didn’t want to be a charger and he chose correctly or he wouldn’t have any Super bowl wins lol not even brees nor rivers were able to do it

Same as Elway before him & same as NBA superstars today that force their way off teams. There was a lot of bashing of Eli, even throughout his career, but it happened & it's not like Chargers gave him away for free. They got a haul & a franchise QB out of it too.
