    Tuvok had to stand at his station for seven years because his station chair broke down in the first Caretaker episode, and no one ever told him.

      I vaguely remember something from years (decades) ago there was supposed to be a second con chair tucked away on the port most side of the con station ( the rail it rode one wrapping around instead of a simple arc , but it either got left out in the pilot, or was removed because it looked odd in pre production

    Voyager was the last Federation ship before the revolution in internal bridge lighting. Which allowed the crew to apparently not sprain their ankles on steps they didn't see.
    Starfleet had developed advanced rote muscle memory training, so that every member would instinctully know the details of the complicated teir design, and thus not put a foot wrong.

      Except for the first officer in the pilot, who, when told to brace, immediately forgot he was standing right next to a railing and decided now was the right time to leap across the entire room to grab onto the far end of the helm console.

    I've ALWAYS loved the Intrepid class bridge and of course the Equinox bridge. However yeah the Intrepid class honestly has been my favorite 24th Century Starfleet bridge.
    The only thing I did find it annoying was how small the view screen was compared to the size of the bridge itself. I also did find it odd that the Conn station was so huge. Poor Tom having to slide back and forth to operate the station himself lol.
    I honestly was wondering what those blue areas on the sides of the Tactical and Operations stations were. Nice to hear/see what they really were.
    Yeah I agree Harry should have been promoted to Lieutenant around season 5 maybe 6 of the series.

    In re: point 2, the out-of-universe reason for two seats is that it reflects the tense equality between Janeway and Chakotay in his capacity as leader of the Maquis crew, especially early in the run.

      @pjlusk7774 2 months ago +8

      I’d also say that the relative lack of bridge science stations is indicative of the idea that Janeway is functionally her own science officer up until season 4, when that role largely shifts to Seven. Which is when the astrometrics lab gets built!

    The Voyager Bridge overall was by far the most cinematic of any of the TV bridges. There's just one serious flaw, the stairs.
    For the captain to get off the elevator into her chair, she has to go down two or three steps and then go back up one or two steps to get to her chair. There is a railing right in front of the elevator that blocks her from walking directly from the elevator going down one or two steps and being right next to her chair, those railings don't do anything they just block access and force people to go down two or three stops and then back up a step for absolutely no reason.
    It was kind of funny in the first couple of seasons to watch her stomping in her little boots with her hair bun bouncing up and down the steps every time she had to go on the bridge.
    And of course to get to her ready room, down a step or two and then down a few more to get to her ready room level.
    And poor Tom paris, he has to come off the elevator go down two or three steps, go back up one step, walk to the front of that platform and then walk back down two or three steps to finally get into his pit.
    I know why this was done, to stagger the actors in a way that they all are facing forward and can be seen from a front-facing shot which ended up almost never was used, but really that command platform should have been all on one level so that once the captain went down a couple of stairs she was on the same level as her chair, like when Picard went down that ramp he was on the level of his chair.
    To have her go back up a step just is a silly design flaw and like I said, those two little railings that don't really do anything and aren't even connected to the main railing would have been the first thing that I ripped out if I was the captain.
    Since they are separate pieces and not connected to that main railing, I've often wondered if they were a late addition since they really seem random, added on and in the way.
    They're literally are a couple of scenes where she places or hand on it that she goes down a stepping them back up a couple of steps practically pointing to them being in the way and uselessness.
    But I love the color scheme, I love the lighting they used, I like the Cubbies that everybody has to work in but it is too bad that even though they built those expensive side Cubbies for engineering and whatever that they almost never got used, once in a blue moon you would see B'lanna over there in her workspace but it seems like once they established a shot that showed the captain with Tuvok behind her and the other direction with Harry Kim behind her that they locked those positions down and very rarely ever showed any other angle of the bridge, showing those hidden workspaces that I just referenced and often completely eliminating Tom Paris from the picture, but all of that aside, this bridge is far superior than the one they built for the Enterprise E which is even worse, it is a random Maze of useless railings and pointy consoles sticking out in the pathways to walk between them, not ideal when a ship is getting rocked by photon torpedoes.
    And on a ship supposedly made specifically for battle.
    I even think the Voyager bridge is superior to the Enterprise D Bridge also, although it is beautifully architectural, turn out to be an awful lot of open space that was never used, they never had enough people back at the science stations and for a ship that was primarily built for scientific exploration, they're almost never were any blue shirts on the bridge, even data who probably should have been in a blue shirt. The only one we ever got was counselor Troi when they finally started making her wear a uniform, other than that there were no other blue shirts on the bridge hardly ever unless doctor Crusher came to visit.

    The more you think about it, the one reason the Intrepid Class was never mass produced was not just because of the Dominion War (it contributed) but it required the best and brightest to bring the most out of the ship class (best Chief Engineer, best Security officer, best Ops, and HOLY CRAP do you need the best pilot you can to run that one station).
    Voyaget crew is unexpectedly the GOAT of Starfleet to pull off their successes.

    Actually my first choice of a class of ship to serve on. It's nice, capable, about the size of crew where you can know everyone but not too quickly or too much, mission variety, all that. Always did think the captain's chair should be at least somewhat more centered, though: kind of a big distance from the XO there.

    On the original show, there was a two-person console because it was held in navigation that worked hand-in-hand. It was strange in Next Generation that they had the Ops station in that place instead of on the back wall where it belongs, and also strange on Enterprise that even early in its history while they still are sharting space that they didn't have that dedicated navigation position alongside the helm.
    In Voyager it would have made for better TV to have Tom and Harry sitting side-by-side in a navigation Ops configuration where they could have discussions and plot happen between them, and where opiates used to be should really be the science station, which should occupy a prominent place on a ship which was built primarily and specifically for deep space scientific research, but this show always had a shocking lack of blue shirts considering its scientific mission. And also being lost in unknown and Uncharted space, scientists on the bridge would be pretty important.

  • @seti7181

    My reason as to why Harry Kim never got promoted - He kept getting killed, switched or infected every month or so, and each time that happens, Janeway restarts a timer. If the timer reaches zero, Harry gets a promotion, but with Borg, Kazon, Species 8472 and the like floating about, he just never catches a break xD

  • @NoFormalTraining
    @NoFormalTraining 2 months ago +1

    You'd think being a science vessel the science station would be larger and have more crew assigned to it each shift, or at least the potential to have more crew operating it. Ditto with the engineering station opposite, which in many ways, should have been used for more sciencey stuff for the most part, until an engineer was needed to use one of its consoles

    I love that the helm is so long it needs a chair on a rail to operate. Meaning during a battle when the ship is at red alert, the pilot, who has no seatbelt, is likely to be thrown out of their seat and have to spend the rest of the fight flying the ship on the floor in the dark while their chair is hitting them every time it slides back and forth.

    We hear from Alpha Quadrant Janeway in the fractured time episode (I forgot the actual name) when built, the ship didn't have an Astrometric Lab. That space became equipped once mapping home became a priority. I Imagine other science tasks also got offloaded from the general purpose bridge station into dedicated labs when their constant use distracted from standard bridge activity

    it was revealed that in TNG, Picard was unique in having his ships counselor on the bridge but he did so because she was a Betazoid and her deeply empathic sensing of emotions made it easier to help deal with aliens on a first contact situation such as the Tamarian race in the famous "Darmok" Season 5 episode 2. Despite being unable to understand the Tamarians, Diana helped by sensing some of their intent via emotions. Usually only One seat was alone on most ships but in smaller ships there was usually two, one for the captain and one for the first officer unless like Mr Spock, the first officer had a secondary role on the bridge i.e. science officer or weapons or even pilot such as Commander Pike has done with his "Number One" on both "Discovery" and "Strange New World"

    Tom and Harry had the hardest jobs on the bridge. Harry had to handle almost all aspects of ship operations, and Tom's station was so huge he needed a sliding chair to reach everything. If Voyager hadn't been so heavily automated, the crew would have had real problems being so few in number.

  • @tyranavalon
    @tyranavalon 2 months ago

    The science console would have seen more use in a standard Intrepid class ship, one with a full crew compliment and dedicated science officer. Much of Voyager's bridge consoles were rerouted to different stations to make it easier for limited crew to still complete all necessary tasks. Additionally, dedicated science facilities such as the Astrometrics Lab were not in the original designs and were built later by the crew to facilitate their journey home.

  • @garyrobbins283

    Imagine if that time fractured Voyager somehow returned to Starfleet and they started developing a technology that kept different sections of the ship in different time streams, and only the crew could cross thru them.

  • @derekstone9715
    @derekstone9715 2 months ago

    That science station was not a design flaw. They lost a huge amount of crew when caretaker happened, so they were under-manned even with Chakotay's crew.
    The main design flaw of the bridge was literally putting a schematic of the friggin' ship behind the captain, so anyone they were chatting with, friend or foe, had full info on the placement of critical systems.

    The number of times I had done self destruct and fired torpedos etc
    Star Trek: Captain's Chair" is a vintage, interactive PC CD-ROM program released in 1995/1997 that provides a 360-degree virtual tour of five different Federation starship bridges.
    Key Features of the Software:
    Virtual Tours: Covers the bridges from The Original Series (USS Enterprise), The Next Generation (Enterprise-D, Enterprise-E), Deep Space Nine (USS Defiant), and Voyager (USS Voyager).
    Interactive Elements: Users can click on various consoles, phasers, and PADDs to view them in detail.
    Guided Tours: Includes commentary from bridge officers such as Captain Sulu, Lt. Commander Worf, Commander Riker, Captain Sisko, and Captain Janeway.
    Compatibility: Designed for Windows 95/98 and Mac, it is often run on modern machines using emulation software like DOSBox-X.

    I always imagined that the larger stations were partly due to the smaller crew complement, so more central control and oversight would be needed.
    I did see a version with three chairs, and always quite liked the idea of the ship's counselor being a standard fixture.

    • @Senkoau
      @Senkoau 2 months ago +5

      Honestly I never understood why the counselor was needed on the bridge at all. Especially as the TNG one wasn't even qualified for bridge command until years into their mission. I've always felt the three chairs are best used for XO, Captain, Science Officer then vary as needed since they're generally not going to be on the bridge at the same time. XO's chair can be used for anyone acting as a secondary aid to the officer of the day and the third chair can cycle out to important visitors like commodore's or admirals if you don't have a dedicated admirals quarters or short term advisors e.g. a local dignitary. Then again I also feel any position intended to be manned on most shifts should have a chair, and somewhere for crew to eat without leaving the bridge.
      Its why with a little modification the star trek online Yorktown bridge would be my ideal one for a larger ship. In the center is the command chairs (3) and in front of them you have conn and tactical 1 with the viewscreen. On an arch behind the command chairs is tactical 2 with a weapons locker under it. Behind tactical 2 are two seated stations facing away from the viewscreen which I would have as operations (focused on internal affairs and near the XO's chair) and engineering 1 (focused on the ship rather than what's happening outside). On the other side of the arch for operations and engineering 1 are four more configurable consoles. I'd add chairs and have them a engineering 2, science 1 and 2, communications (communications on the right, science 1 and 2 centrally located either side of an aisle and engineering 2 on the left. This allows the communciations and operations officers to talk easily same with engineering 1 and 2 while science 1 and 2 have a clear view of the main viewscreen).
      Starting at the front left of the ring around the command area and moving clockwise you have the head, an open area where I'd put a table and chairs for bridge crew to eat their lunch at so they're ready to dash back to stations if needed and have a nice view out the forward viewport then the emergency turbolift to the battlebridge. Numerous lockers with various emergency supplies. Two configurable consoles. A turbolift, captain's ready room, bridge replicator and dinning equipment. More storage lockers. The access to the auxillary area. A configurable console probably normally set to mission operations. Two more configurable consoles and the master system display, one would probably be set to life support and the other to propulsion. Another configurable console probably security. Door to the auxillary area opposite the other one. Storage lockers. Doorway to a short corridor leading to the conference/briefing room, a turbolift and two more configurable consoles probably computer core access, the ships library and emergency control. Lockers and back to the head.
      The auxillary area located behind the main bridge would have a bridge teleporter, emergency escape pods, aft airlock, the conference room turbolift to access the conference room without going through the bridge and of course jeffries tubes and other ship related systems.

      I agree that its a small ship but has all the bells and whistles of a large ship. I think Voyager must have lost a lot of trained people int the transition to the Delta Quadrant. Also I don’t think I appreciated just how much Tom and Harry did from their stations. I think it was mentioned once that Harry was lucky to get such a position straight out the academy which makes more sense now considering how much was managed from that station and poor Tom needed a sliding chair just to view all the panels.

    My favorite (and IMHO) best bridge design. I'd follow it closely with ENTs one, as a early functional & utilitarian form.

    The most unbelievable aspect of Star Trek is the size of the ship's bridges. As far as I know there is no bridge of a major vessel in existence anywhere near those sizes of the federation ships. I get it, they made all the room so the camera crew can move around to get more different angle shots and somehow nobody ever questions the complete waste of unused space on a federation ships bridge. A more believable control bridge of a vessel would be the Nostromo from Alien. Most all the space is cramped.

    It was the coziest bridge somewhere you just wanted to stay all day. Thats the problem with modern trek they havent got the design logic of wanting a space like that where it feels cozy and lovable rather than stark with loads of lights and colours.

    Don't forget the astrometrics lab did not exist when the ship was originally built. The science station would have become redundant after they added that on but there were still times when they had to shut it down due to how much power it uses.

    I live that on TNG from the screens POV shot you can see everyone, its kind of like a band with worf being the drummer on a rising platform. On voyager people Janeway is blocked by paris, tuvok and kim are half of screen (standard def) with a lot of railing and consoles in front of them, and B'Lana is completly off screen. Infact you dont get a sense of where B'Lana is in the room.

    I always liked the bridge for Voyager as it just felt more practical than something like the Galaxy bridge. The MSD being a backdrop for any visual comms always seemed less than ideal and the dual command chairs never quite sat right with me, but they were small nitpicks.

    • @Senkoau
      @Senkoau 2 months ago +2

      The MSD is always an issue, especially given the shield frequency codes are displayed on it. I've always felt there should be some treknobabble science invention that has the viewscreen pick ups and the MSD on opposite frequencies (or something) so what the camera (or sci-fi equivalent) picks up and beams to the other ship is basically hardwired to only show a black screen rather than the MSD. Same way some modern cars have directional diodes on the central display screen so the person in the passenger seat can watch a movie on it while the driver doesn't see anything to distract them. Basically you can see the car controls from both seats but if you put on a movie only the person in the passenger seat can see it. There are genuine reasons for the bridge crew to be able to see the overall ship information at a glance. You could also wire it up so the viewscreen doesn't project till the MSD is switched to a screen saver equivalent I suppose.

    To be fair, Voyager did not use the science station because they massive upgraded.
    The standard equipment was not enough so they build an entire astrometric lab. And that lab was manned about every day

    If im not mistaken the guy who designed the LCARS interface Michael Okuda, once said in an interview with the TNG crew that the computer system access points can be configured in whatever way that the operator wanted it to be done so. while there may be standardized layouts. each operator can configure their post to whatever layout they want.
    also meaning that even the computer in the lunch room could be handed helm control and so on. Starfleet ships like Voyager is not only smart but quite redundant in interface flexibility and layouts. Even tactical can take helm control and has taken it in the show. much of these points were entirely missed unless I missed it.

    I have to agree that the science station was a victim of Voyager's circumstances more than anything else. If it had remained in the Alpha Quadrant, I could see that particular science missions would require a dedicated specialist supervising the mission, and that would also in turn require ready access to the Operations officer and likely the command staff as well. However, with Voyager's primary (self-assigned) mission to simply get home and take notes on the way there, they didn't have the luxury of conducting weeks or months long science missions requiring a specialist and a dedicated bridge station.

    Let us see you have the captains chair and the first officers chair and that's why you have two command chairs on the bridge of Voyager , the other stations possibly had seat /stools for the Star Fleet officers to lean against or to sit on during their shifts on the bridge but they may have been damaged in the first two episodes of Star Trek Voyages during the first battles or when the caretaker brought them to the Delta section of space .

    This video cleared up something for me I have wondered since the show was on the air, on the premiere episode Tom Paris and Harry Kim are in the captain's ready room they have a conversation and then they go on the bridge and Harry gapes around in awe as if he's never seen it, which made me wonder, didn't he have to get off the elevator on the bridge in order to get to the captain's ready room so he would have already have seen it?
    Apparently according to this video, they could have taken turbo lift 2 and then taken the hallway around the bridge in order to get to the captain's ready room through her personal secret mystery door, which I assumed led to her bathroom.
    But if it's a door that leads around the bridge to another elevator, that explains why Harry Kim never saw the bridge!
    Even though they never showed her using that door again in 7 years, which would have been awfully convenient in lots of circumstances rather than going up a flight of stairs to the bridge and then another flight to get to the elevator leve, it seems to me it would have been easier just to take her mystery door and take the hallway around the bridge and take turbolift 2.
    Also there may have been times that she wanted to get to her ready room without walking through the middle of the bridge.
    So many wonderful parts of this bridge like this mystery door, and the stations on the sides were never used and that's a shame.
    Extras on TV shows get paid nearly nothing, they should have thrown a few blue shirts at those stations since this is supposedly a science dedicated vessel.

    I like the idea of a large central console at helm as to be a primary station when others are not in use. I don't like seeing multiple functions funneled into small consoles. Conceptually, I have a problem when important positions are staffed by low ranking officers; however I have also a problem with division of labor. When cruising along, Tactical has few responsibilities to running the ship. I know communications are often split between Tactical and Ops in the TNG era, but I prefer there to be a separate Communications officer. Voyager may not have needed one given its circumstances but most ships really do. And it's not like Voyager didn't have blueshirts that could have functioned as science officers (Samantha Wildman). I know, budgets and what not.

    I like that on the thumbnail, you have the arrow pointing to the doorway on the left side that we never see anyone use or come out of in all 7 seasons but because I've built this ship in 1 to 1 on Minecraft, I know that the doorway leads to a few escape pods, a small crew lounge and an airlock.

    It follows in the footsteps of Galaxy class having a very spacious bridge. What surprised me is that as small as Voyager is, it has a dedicated XO. A galaxy class sure.the second in command job is huge on that ship. There are only 150 or so crew members. That's 50 crew members on the whole ship per workshift.

    Great video. I'm lucky enough to have a piece of the voyager bridge LCARS panels that were sold as part of the Okuda collection a while back. Great to get a better idea of what it actually did. It was to the left of the MSD on the lower panels. Referred to as an engineering panel in the auction information if I remember correctly.

    Cosmetically I like the Galaxy the best. Simpler, cleaner lines, with a rounded and organic feel. Not as harsh and angular as most bridges.
    Another thing I would change is to steal the area at the back of the bridge from the Defiant. I would still have a dedicated briefing room, but it would be nice to have a medium sized meeting area at the back. I would not make it a sit-down table like a standard briefing room, but it would have a display table in the center and several terminals on the walls.
    Other than those two changes, I think Voyager is the best design. I like the 3 (or 4) level system of voyager, where the captains chair is mid-way between the front pilot station and the rear operations and security stations. I also like how Voyager has the stations wrap around so the occupants can face toward the center/front of the bridge (unlike the Galaxy where the rear stations all looked at a wall). And while CIG didn't like the science station, I would still include something like it.

    I suppose the science station still exists for specialised tasks (in non-Voyager circumstances), so not to overwhelm the Ops station which is more concerned with 'daily operations' aboard the Intrepid class?
    I would've guessed there to be more coffee mugs though.

    • @Jack_Stafford1
      @Jack_Stafford1 2 months ago +2

      For a ship that was built primarily and specifically for scientific exploration and research, you would think that the Science Station would have been one of the primary stations, with Ops or tactical being in one of the Cubbies on the side of the bridge, like B'Lanna's, rarely used or seen, or Chekhov's was in the motion picture.
      Also, for a ship primarily built for science, there was always a shocking lack of blue shirts on the bridge, or on the show in general.
      Other than the doctor, you saw almost no blue shirt anywhere on the ship which is pretty surprising.
      Being lost in an unknown and uncharted part of space, you'd think having scientists on the bridge would be important.

    • @AberrantChibi
      @AberrantChibi 2 months ago +1

      @Jack_Stafford1 Good points, though I would like to note that captain Janeway herself had a scientific background, so maybe that might explain the lack of a scientific officer?

    • @Jack_Stafford1
      @Jack_Stafford1 2 months ago +1

      @AberrantChibi I suppose you could do double duty as a science officer like Spock was both a science officer and first officer, I wish they had specifically explained that on the show, and still think there should be blue shirts roaming around more often but that is an interesting idea.
