    John Goodman somehow manages to be friendly and reserved at the same time. He banters with her but looks away from her a lot of the time. He seems like he's hiding behind a front. Of course he is being filmed and that probably makes him a little uncomfortable.

    Ruby is the epitome of New York savage 'romance is dead' humour, of course she would want to sneer at and belittle Jane's book on romance. That part to me was like watching a kid in the playground who is a bully, you just know they are actually just really fucked up and injured little souls (it was cringe) . I prefer it when Ruby doesn't get aggressive with her humour, the Helen Mirren interview for example. Perhaps she is more aggressive when she feels threatened? That's how it usually works.

    • @Chillmax
      @Chillmax  3 года назад +1

      Perhaps her natural harsh humour became mingled with British sarcasm & tendency to vicious put-downs; personally I love every word, she can do no wrong, the nastier the better, she doesn't mean it!

    • @SarahSmith-nr2wj
      @SarahSmith-nr2wj 3 года назад +2

      @@Chillmax I'm British, I get the irony, the sarcasm etc and I understand the public interest in taking celebrities off their pedistools, but consider Ruby's going into hardcore therapy and her subsequent training and interest in psychotherapy. I'm not saying she was being mean, but that really the interview exposes Ruby herself more than Jane Seymour. Her humour is laced with her own feelings of inadequacy, because this is so transparent to me, I don't always find it very funny, sometimes it's like watching a car crash.

    • @Chillmax
      @Chillmax  3 года назад +1

      @@SarahSmith-nr2wj Just as you say that Ruby seems more to expose herself in her interviews, your comments seem to be in a similar vein, being more about you than Ruby! I believe someone once said "It's not that deep", if you like it, enjoy it & laugh, if you don't, hit the off button ;-).

    Ruby said of herself years later when she was was practising mindfulness hat she had been very aggressive in her Ruby Wax meets.... shows. I could certainly see it in spades here. It was really cringeworthy. I am extremely happy for her and people generally that she discovered mindfulness.

    • @Chillmax
      @Chillmax  Год назад

      From memory, as I haven't watched it in a while, this episode is an unfair example, the guests might not have been having a great day & that made Ruby behave how she did. The 1990's was a different time, very bright, brash & bold & Ruby fitted that well & people liked & loved this at the time. I'm of course happy if Ruby is happier now, but I don't think La Wax should regret anything she did, although I don't know the context of the statement to which you refer. We all change over time & there's nothing we can do about the past, so Ruby should be proud of her back catalogue, it made us laugh, whilst she poked fun at mainly over-paid adult pretenders. Personally I'd prefer an 'aggressive' comedy style, 'mindful' comedy doesn't sound that funny to me.

    i think i get why lisa kudrow seemed a bit "off"- she was a massive star at that point and to be out on the streets where anybody could get at her must have been a bit worrying.

    • @Chillmax
      @Chillmax  4 года назад +1

      Ummmm, not sure about that, possibly, but a famous person in London then, just going about their business or in this case with a film crew would not have had much trouble, unless whipped up by some odd frenzy, British people would just leave you alone! I haven't seen this in a while, but remembering it, she was most likely just having an off day, we all do ;-)

    • @MrTonyInchpractice
      @MrTonyInchpractice 4 года назад +1

      @@Chillmax disagree- she was in london surrounded by tourists (and brits)- tourists are sight-seers, kudrow is a site to see. i'll grant that brits r a little more reticent than yanks, at least they were then; but she couldn't bank on that. u could hear the concern and shock in her voice when she realised it was to be outdoors.
      another reason i dont think this was a success is the fact that kudrow is a comedian herself, not just a comic actor, so i think she could see thro a lot of ruby's tricks. and i don't think lisa was in a bad mood either, she didn't seem to be concentrating on ruby, and it's just probably difficult for ruby to get a rise out of her. would love to hear what ruby thought about it.

    John Goodman is the best. Hes hilarious, you always see actors and actresses give interviews and they hide themselves. Not John, hes so down to earth its great. I love how he says "NO." Right away. The Borrowers was great too. "The man wants to.drink" yeah im sure he did. Not to be mean or disrespectful to a fellow St. Louisan but the man was an alcoholic. Went dry in 2007 at least thats what he told David Letterman. Seemed like Ruby wasnt a fan of
    Roseannes. First time ive seen John light up.

      This was never meant to be a classic interview show, that had be done to death. From memory, this episode wasn't the best & if you only know Ruby from this you may think that, especially with Lisa Kudrow. Ruby's style was to sidle herself into the guests life & become their friend to get them to reveal things they shouldn't, if she didn't have time for that, as here, she just made fun of them, and herself, in the hope of making the audience laugh, which she generally did. Ruby was always a love her hate her character, so she's not for everyone, personally I always loved her brash American persona, the wide eyed innocent routine, when in reality she's determined to get the guest to reveal all & make us laugh at the same time, it was definitely refreshing after Parkinson or similar.

    Ruby was the precursor to being famous for being rude, its all about herself and looking at the evidence, the TV is littered with this obnoxious woman's wannabes.🙄

    • @Chillmax
      @Chillmax  3 года назад

      There were two (or more) parts to Ruby's 'schtick', the first where she'd clown around shouting at people & the second where she was more like a fan girl interviewer, either way, at all times her aim was to entertain & that she did. To round Ruby's performance down to just 'rude' & to almost blame her for modern day ills, is not only unfair & overly simplistic, but to miss the point. She knew her 'guests' were just adult pretenders getting paid too much & so did they & she was gonna let them have it for our amusement. Ruby never set out to do this, she thought it was the life of an actress for her, but she didn't quite fit, so it was lucky for her & us, that this just fell into her lap, we should all be so lucky. Nobody has followed in Ruby's footsteps & even if they tried, it would be a very pale comparison.
