What a great find. Keep searching there must be hundred of thousands of hours more out there. I am thankful for the effort you put into finding these old films.
A great film of a joyful event! The carriers are so very weather-beaten, a hint to ship modelers like me. I noticed Corsairs with four bladed props, making them F4U-4s. As always, many thanks. PS-I like the use of the weather balloons!
In 1962 I was Aboard the USS Brush DD-745, we were escorting the USS Bennington Aircraft Carrier. We stopped in Okinawa then were told weigh anchors, underway to ride out a Typhoon. It was Brutal, for 3 days we headed into it. The Bennington had part of Her Fwd Flight Deck ripped up. Us on the Tin Cans were under water most of the time. By The Grace of GOD we came out of it. One the Tin Cans had the fwd Gun Mount ripped off. That's the only time I almost got Sea Sick. GOD is good.
My Dad was on the Shangri-La flying in a TBM (radar/radio operator) for the last year of the war. He always said that they returned to San Diego, but that must have been where he mustered out. I'd love to see more film of TBMs!
Yes -- after about three weeks at San Pedro/Long Beach, Shangri-La went to San Diego. Thanks for adding your family history. And when we get some interesting TBM footage, we'll use it! More to come.
@@airailimages do you do still images? My sister has his "Yearbook" which has hundreds of photos of the ship and crew. I'd be glad to scan and email whichever look good.
Interesting old film. My dad worked at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard located in Portsmouth, Va. while the Shangri La was being built and I later served on it from 1965 - 67.
Great film my uncle he enlist into Navy in 1943 at age of 17 1/2 was stationed on the USS Hancock CV-19 1944-1945 .He got wounded near Okinawa award a Purple Heart 1944-1945 support Air Group 6 & 7 as a AOM.
My dad came back in 1946 he served in the Atlantic theater anti sub duty flying Consolidated PBY Catalinas in search of the German Wolf packs. He never said a word but going up I noticed he had a affection for sea planes. Looked up his military record a few years ago.
In Europe, my dad was a layer on QF 40mm Bofors. He was wounded in France and returned from an English hospital to Canada in 1946....I was born in '47.
Glad I found this video! Such stirring images and music accompaniment of these battle-worn behemoths being welcomed home. My grandfather was a corsair aviator on the Shangri-la. His story goes that he was shot down during a strafing run at Okinawa, and was eventually rescued. The best part is that after some recuperation time, he was flying back to the ship and was able to shoot down 3 Japanese planes. I believe two of them were "Kates" and I want to say the third one was a "Val". I'm very proud of the job he did, even though none of them wanted to be there. Thank you for posting this!
What a great post. A joyous homecoming for many. My dad came back to San Francisco after his service in the Pacific. Thanks again Mr. Johnsen for the history that needs to be shared. As always, God bless you and yours always and thanks again for all you do! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸👍
My Dad said he never dropped a torpedo, everything they did was 500 pounders on mostly ground targets. The Shangri-La was sitting off the coast of Japan waiting to start bombing for the invasion when they got word the war was over. He always told me I wouldn't be here if they hadn't dropped the Abombs. I think most of the flight crews thought they would be shot down over Japan. And they knew what would happen to them if they made it to the ground alive.
Great video of true Hero’s who had survived a bloody Pacific War. They must have been ready sprint down the Gangway and experience civilian life. Almost all are sadly gone now, but it was the Greatest Generation that saved the World from Pure evil. So many young people are not taught the sacrifices made by these Sailors and Soldiers that preserved our way of life. I made two deployments during Vietnam on a Super Carrier and remember how excited when we arrived in Norfolk and could see our families. God bless all who are deployed now and that they return safely.
Great video, thanks for posting. Am I the only one to comment on a young Norma Jean Baker (aka, Marilyn Monroe) in the thumbnail and at 7:41? During WW2 she worked at the “Radioplane” drone factory in Burbank not too far from the San Pedro dock.
Guys I need some help here. If anyone can find a picture of John Walter "Jack" Jones who was one of her radio operators from 1944-45 I would greatly appreciate it. The reason I ask is because he was my great-grandfather and I'd like to find a picture
My father's brother Paul was a gun Captain aboard the hancock. He was kia April 7th 1945 at okinawa. My father never got over losing his brother.
Sorry to hear about your family loss. Thank you for sharing that -- it is good to hear from the families of veterans.
Part of the greatest generation
Wonderful video. Thank You for posting it. My father was on the USS Shangri-La that day as it pulled into San Pedro, California.
And thank you for watching and commenting. Always good to hear from the families of veterans from those times.
Lucian Loyal HUDDLESTON...CAME HOME N 45...THANKS DAD FOR SERVING AND ALL OF YOUR SHIPMATES.
Thanks for watching, and adding a bit of family history. Always good to hear from families and veterans.
An amazing choice of music to accompany the homecoming of the Greatest Generation. Just beautiful.
Thank you. Glad you appreciate it.
In the 1960's, I had a friend next door whose dad served on the Hancock during WWII 🚣
🌌🔭
Thanks for watching. It's always good to connect the dots with those we have known who are a part of history now.
What a great find. Keep searching there must be hundred of thousands of hours more out there. I am thankful for the effort you put into finding these old films.
Thank you, I will
My Dad was a Marine on board the Shangri-La during WW2. He arrived in port on this day.
Glad you found our presentation of this film! Always good to hear from the families of veterans.

My dad was on USS Hancock during the VIetnam War, stationed at Alameda, CA. We
went on a couple of dependent day cruises on her.
I think that's really neat that the Navy did dependent day cruises.

The "welcome home" airship was cool.
Quite awesome...brings shivers...that music is perfect! Thanks.
Thank you.
Such a heart warming video. Was good to see them being appreciated, not like the Viet Nam Vets were treated.
Yes, the more I looked at this footage, the more I appreciated it. Heartwarming.

My dad was a navigator on the Shangri-La during WWII. They could have known each other......
Interesting old film. My dad worked at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard located in Portsmouth, Va. while the Shangri La was being built and I later served on it from 1965 - 67.
Thanks for watching, and adding that bit of family history -- two generations with an affiliation to the Shangr-La.

Awesome video, Fred, just awesome !
Thank you!
Greatest generation 👍
1. Thanks, 3 Thumbs Up! 2. In looking at these ships, the phrase that comes to mind is "You Should See The Other Guy!"
2. Of course that might be hard the other guy is sitting on the ocean floor.

I have a copy of the books that recorded the history of the cruises (3). Unfortunately I was not able to find a photo of your great grandfather.
My father in that picture somewhere on shang
That's neat; glad you found this video.
My dad is also somewhere in that video god rest his soul
Please let me know the song from 5:10.
