@richardridge916: According to the producer, Reynolds was great but she didn’t sell tickets (and much easier to get along with than Bacall.). I know they also tried to get Ann-Margaret after Raquel Welch left unexpectedly due to a pregnancy she lost.
Ann-Margret??? God help us. Saw all three. Bacall was the frontrunner, but by all accounts a total bitch. Not that that matters - Raquel Welch was painfully inept - but Reynolds was surprisingly good. And she could dance. Big help to be able to join the male chorus.
How wonderful it is to see Debbie at the top of her form. It's too bad that the audience for this show was already exhausted because she should have had a long run in the show.
I remember a review for this show when Debbie Reynolds went into it. The reviewer said "Debbie Reynolds is the star this show should have had from the beginning". When she opened in the show there was a newspaper strike and she wasn't reviewed until the closing notice had gone up.
I saw all three, and must agree: Reynolds nailed it. Reynolds believably suggested a TV journalist of the era. You could buy her as a celeb interviewer; Stone's character fit her like a glove. And she got the cut ballad and new (real dance steps) choreography for "One of the Boys." It was in every way an accomplished musical comedy performance.
@@DDumbrille: It’s not fair to evaluate her performance from s bootleg tape with unfocused bad sound and make a general opinion. But people do that with you on posted comments and looks (👎).
@@johnpickford4222 Whatever. She was indeed a very talented performer both in movies and television, but singing was never her strong suit. On any level.
She's the only one of the three stars who did this role who was actually a musical performer, and she had the steel to pull this off. She was also the only one who could move from one place to another without help. She was terrific in this. Lauren Bacall owned it, Raquel Welch was embarrassing, but Debbie Reynolds was wonderful.
It's actually a great way to start THIS musical - because the rest of the show shows us how she got the award. It's witty, sharp and tuneful. Did you see the show? We need to know right off who this woman is, and the song tells us in five minutes.
Debbie was sensational in Woman of the Year!
A truly great STAR!
Never knew she did it! Looks awesome

Awesome catch. Love her rendition. She was a master, no doubt.

Such a talent!
I've always been curious how Debbie fared in this number - and by God she's fabulous! It's astounding that she never did Broadway again.
She had a mini stroke during a performance during the run. I would imagine there were concerns after that. I adored her.
Are you kidding? She's just bellowing...barely in tune.

Heard Lauren Bacall singing? She had the razor sharp diction - but she couldn't hum God Save the Queen.
Thankyou so much for sharing. :-)
She would have been a crackin' Mama Rose!
wow…you're right…ever thought of that…she would've have been fantastic in that role.
@@michaeljj43 She did it for summer stock once I believe. And I'm sure she was great!

What planet were living on?Raquel Welch brought the show to a new level. Critics raved and the show went on to become a true blockbuster.
There was a WONDERFUL video of Debbie and the cast doing One OfTheBoys and it's disappeared. Was that yours?
Yes, it was. It it might show up again. ;)
You'reGonnaLoveTomorrow yes pls i would love to see that
Please, I would KILL to see that.

oh.....
Very sad.
That song is a deadly dull way to start a Broadway musical. Merman could not have made it work. Mary Martin flying could not have done it.
@Glenn Close could’ve done it with one look.

I saw her live. Great Star- But,
She just didn't have it.
Miscast.
Oh please
