This is a great Johnny Rivers song. Secret agent movies and TV shows were all the rage in the early to mid '60s. Yeah Jay, James Bond, The Man from UNCLE, I-Spy, Matt Helm movies (Dean Martin) and Harry Palmer movies (Michael Caine), Our Man Flint. and all the other ones that Mike Myers parodied in the Austin Powers movies. This song was huge. Most of us children of the '60s remember the chorus by heart and most of the verses.
This was the theme song for a television series I LOVED as a kid. Patrick McGoogan was the secret agent. The same guy who played that horrible king in Braveheart as an older man. I had a crush on him as a little girl.
Secret Agent was the American name of the show that came from Britain called Danger Man. Patrick McGoohan played the main character, John Drake, and he was handsome and smooth. McGoohan was the highest-paid actor at the time in Britain because of this show and went on to create and act in one of the most bizarre and compelling shows ever called The Prisoner. Give it a watch! You’ll either love it and want to keep watching or not like it at all.
McGoohan was a fascinating individual. He was offered the role of James Bond twice and turned it down because he found the character too violent and immoral. He had two conditions for his character in Danger Man- no kissing, and he must use his brain before using a gun.
The Prisoner really messed with my head as a kid. It was the beginning of my love of brain twisting stories and mind f#@$ movies. It holds up today. I'm surprised there hasn't been a reboot yet. I Am Not a Number; I Am a Free Man
I too am in my 60’s and I LOVED Secret Agent Man and The Prisoner which was an absolutely addicting fantastic series. I still watch full episodes on you tube. He was a very talented actor. Patrick Mcgoohan also costarred in the movie Jamaica Inn as the abusive uncle. That movie was based on a Daphne Dumaurier novel starring Jane Seymour.
