Glad to know it's a shared madness. I knew I had a problem when I tried carrying two bags with a bunch of cameras on a hike. I even slim down my bags to bare essentials, but they still end up filled.
Steve O'Nions recently did a video that had similar message. I think it's a great point. I also think that's why I prefer to shoot landscapes on film over digital. I am more limited in lens choice and mobility with my 4x5 than my D850. I have to choose on location if it will be color or black and white... the limitations make me think more, and I think putting in that effort gives me better results.

I can remember when ordering a beer was easy. You could get either this one or that one. And we were happy.
A few years ago I went to a spot in Denver that had like 150 drafts. They had so many they had a multi-page menu just for the beer.
Or settling in for the night to watch TV before 100's of channels and RUclips, Netflix etc.
Totally understand this. I recently decided to display all my cameras & lenses on a shelf. I got totally overwhelmed when they were all in one place, didn’t realise I had that many. Each camera had a half finished roll in it. I’m in the process of downsizing and feeling better about it already.
I've definitely had days where I toiled over what camera and film to bring and ended up bringing it all, which was a major problem in the field. That being said, I do love all the variety of choices you bring to your channel.
Hi from Czech republic. My favorite camera is the Rolleiflex old Standart and a combination of HP5 + and DS10 developer.

The need to simplify. Yes, I agree. We´re absolutely spoiled these days. Hundreds of cameras & lense combinations to choose from, developer, film, paper, etc.
Maybe that´s why so many people still just shoot with their smarthone...?
Man you were preaching to me today. I’m riding around with 6 cameras with different film. Haven’t taken a photo in an hour. Need to simplify.
I now have a little notebook so I can keep track of what camera has what film. Hasn't helped much in making a decision.
@@carbonejack I have tried many times to keep a notebook of what settings on what camera took what photo. I am not an organized person. But really for me the exploring and photography go hand in hand. So I don't stress too much about it, or try not too.

I have to agree with you I remember when I started all I had was D76 and HP5 and FP4 that was it I ever had only 3 grades of paper 3-4-5 no more no less but you learn how to get the best out of it I have to many cameras but they all have memories for me but it part of the reason I bought my SQ-A and ETRS simple back to basic photography so I enjoy it more it becomes therapeutic it my way to relax after working and I enjoy holding and using each one but that just me every one is different do what’s right for you 👍🏻
Glad you're still with us and not floating out in the middle of the Channel, after that storm!!! With winds as strong as they were, I half expected much of the Isle was in pieces and just flotsam out in the Channel!!. 122mph is a pretty brisk gust of wind!!!.
I don't mind the choices I have. I have plenty of cameras, like yourself, but I don't have much trouble with choosing something to use. I usually have a good idea of what I want to do when I head off to do a shoot and what camera to take, so I narrow those choices down pretty quick. And, when I want to be a bit more casual about things, I just use the first thing I grab and go with that. Sometimes, I may take more than one camera and sometimes I shoot both colour and B&W. The only time I'd have too much choice would be if I owned a vintage camera store!!! :) :P

Interestingly, Steve O'Nions posted a video about this subject a week ago too. And I also find limiting my choice can help me get better pictures. I'm in an "FP4 and Hydrofen" phase at present, and enjoying it.

Roge, I don't know how you do it and I don't care. but you always know what I'm struggling with and how to explain it in a way that sinks in. I'm new to film photography about 3 months in now and I'm zipping constantly between film stocks, different cameras and developers. Then left wondering why my shots aren't coming out right. Whether it's the camera, the chems or me. Love the approach you take to your vids mate. Give yourself a pat on the back. I'll buy you a beer at somepoint 👍
When I first got into film photography I did the same thing. I am finally down to 3 developers. I generally only shoot 100 speed or slower film so my 2 go tos are Rodinal and Perceptol. Rodinal being the most used of the two. Perceptol I use when I want the sharpness but not the increase in grain. Granted I lose a stop but that isn't much of a worry. The one specialty developer is Adotech that I use only with CMS 20 II. When I started I wanted to know and do it all. But photography using film is a bit like learning the piano. You got to learn the scales first. Once you get the scales down you can better navigate the rabbit hole of choice and consequence.
I always suggest trying out a variety of film stocks. There's really no other way to tell which one is for you until you try them. Perferably, you'll want to compare from the same camera and developer. There's times where the image is bleh, but I'm in awe at the exposure itself. Acros is like that for me, though it's incredibly overpriced.
Absolutely enjoyed this video. The journey into your mind as a photographer constantly pressured by the demand of something new to keep the YT content engaging, this is fascinating struggle of man over his choices. Yep, having choices is great. But it sure bogs down the system of any project. Great content Roger, thanks for sharing your experience and making a great analysis of the problem of too much gear, too much choice. I would like to simplify and think having fewer choices would help get more projects started and completed.
Too much choice, I definitely am prone to this. Sometimes it reminds me of that episode of Mr Bean where he sits an exam and spends all his time arranging his pencils

First of all, this is a very timely video. I have only 4 cameras all of which I enjoy. I’ve decided that I’m only sticking with my Nikon F3 until I’ve really mastered it. Then onto film development, I like your idea of saving the film leaders to figure out what works when and under various conditions. Second thing, from your many other videos, thank you for reminding me when out shooting to get immersed in what I’m doing, get down low, crawl to the best advantage for just the right shot. I must admit I’ve gotten lazy in the recent past, and it has a noticeable impact on my photography. No more lazy days…getting dirty. Cheers
It's easy to fall into lazy habits. We all do it!
I recently went out shooting with a friend who just bought a Nikon Z9. He brought 3 lenses and miscellaneous gear. I showed up with a 35mm lens on my D700.
I was out shooting while he was back the the car changing lenses... again.

Very good point. Now professional photographers used to use one or two film stocks and one camera (and leave the rest to the lab), concentrating on their photography. Most famous artists painted much the same picture over and over again -- each of those oil paintings taking weeks or even months -- thus developing their "style". As a hobbyist I just love to try things out! But I also always return to proven solutions, like HP5+ and the Nikon FM3A or Yashica Mat 124G. I guess as "amateurs" we should keep on trying new things out, but not forget that results count.

I love keeping my photography simple. I'm currently using my Pentax SP500 with a Meyer-Optik 30mm f/3.5 Lydith and Ilford HP5 developed in Kodak HC-110 1+63 dilution H.

Choice! I have the same dilemma. More and more hardware kills often creativity and makes me lazy. Next week I'm going on a trip in my camper van, not far away from home. Therefore I have selected already 3 cameras and 5 lenses. However, I'm not sure that my choice will be the right choice!;-) Will see!
Same here! F6 and either TriX or Tmax400 and Xtol. I'm very satisfied with how they behave even when pushed to 3200 in Xtol (given that I've metered properly. F6's meter has never let me down!) I do experiment with different stocks of film or lenses from time to time but the thing that is constant is the camera and developer. I don't think that will change anytime soon. Great video as always Roger and beautiful images as well!

Hey Roger, Firstly sorry to hear about your Darkroom. A setback initially however onwards and upwards. Totally agree with your commentary. A wise approach is to rationalise your film stock and consumables.

It's true. I've got too many cameras and have film in several of them. So I can't really shoot them all and some are just sitting there.
The thing i love about photography is that there is so much to try (a bit like the kid in the candy shop), but I agree sometimes you're spoilt for choice. When I get into that mood and I don't know what to do i try to go left field. My favourite challenge is 'the wrong lens'. 600mm for Landscape or 16mm for birding. If I'm really stuck i get my 50mm and reverse it and see where it takes me. If I'm really really stuck i take out my kodak #1 and point and pray!
ha ha like that taking totally wrong lens out and see what happens. 16mm on a bird you'd have to be pretty close though
I could buy cameras until the house was full and then some, but made the decision early on to have a core set, my digital is a Nikon D200, old now but still does a nice job. So naturally my film choice was an F90 as it’s practically the same camera. I also have the N90s as well to keep two different films on the go. Then I have my ETRSI for 120. Again I decided to settle on to developers, Rodinal and my goto Bellini hydrofen. Films core is HP5 and FP4 as go to buy then treat myself to one roll of something new every month or two. Trying rollie retro80 this month. But this was purely so I could get the best out of the core films and not stress over too much choice, really the only choice I have is what film to use. Keep enjoying the time with the camera that way.
Very interesting to listen, especially since I had also a couple of occasions where I couldn't decide which camera to use. I often like to use a camera I never used or I didn't use for a long time for feeling like a beginner. Having no big expectations for the images. If that makes sense.
There is definitely something to say about using only one film/camera combo to tighten up your skills!!! When I was a lad, I only had an OM1 and Tri-X ... that worked for years!!! I fell into the rabbit-hole of too many cameras and films ... still fun, but not as "muscle memory" as my old OM1 and Tri-X!!!
Great point! I mostly stick to Fomapan 200/400 and HP5 these days because I can bulk load them and save a lot of money - film is quite expensive in Argentina. Developer-wise I'm getting used to D76 1+3, because of the higher acutance and also to save some money. I mostly shoot with one 35mm camera and 2 lenses, and 2 medium format cameras. I really don't need any more tbh.

You're right! Simple is the way to go. Don't keep it too simple though, if you limit your choices then you limit your productivity. Sometimes you just need a 200mm lens and owning a decent 28mm prime lens opens up a whole new world. Two films, Ilford's Delta 400 and ORWO UN54, Ilford ID-11, although I'm loving this Kentmere 400! Camera gear breaks down into two catagories for me - "tools" and "toys". If you don't need it, it's a toy - if you need it, well then it's a tool. We all like to play, but it doesn't make the photographs any better :D By the way, you gotta stop trying to flog that ORWO UN54, if it gets too popular the price will go up and then I'm back to Fomapan (joke). Now, completely off topic, where does that "Gone for a Burton" come from? My Grandmother, Bristolian born and bred, from Irish parents used to say it all the time - and you seem to be quite fond of it also.

I like what you had to say about simplicity and choice. Recently I’ve been journeying down that path. Interestingly you and I have chosen the two extreme ends of camera choice in the Nikon world. Your choice the Nikon F6, a beautiful camera, the last of the flagships, it can do everything that a film camera is capable of. Myself on the other hand although I have an extensive collection of film cameras have chosen to use the venerable Nikon F. No battery, no light meter, etc. My goal is to develop my skills in estimating exposure based on the light meter located between my ears. Sometimes it’s a miss but mostly it’s satisfying.
I enjoy watching your channel and watching your progress from the time you started. Now about the mouse piss ( insert appropriate sarcasm)?
Bleached the darkroom in, out and under today! Yes thats another good practice to cling to estimating exposure. I have a game of that with a mate of mine when we shoot professionally together. We are often out by a third or so! Not bad!
This is spooky. I have had a similar thought too and have chosen Fomapan and ILFOTEC HC for my film until I understand it fully. Still umming and aring over the camera as I enjoy all but the A1 and AL1 are still my faves. Great video and enjoy your photographic development.
Switch between the two. I'm only sticking to one incase the shutters between two are a bit off.
It is now 4 weeks in a row that I have had to stay home at the weekends, due to bad weather up here in Manchester. Nothing but dark grey clouds, heavy rain and high winds. I am sick of it. As far as too much equipment goes, I am with you, although like yourself, I have enough cameras of all sorts to fill up a small camera shop. Yesterday I was watching the latest video by Steve Onion's. Surprisingly he too was just walking around with a 35mm camera and prime lens and enjoying himself. He said something that struck a chord with me. He asked : do you remember having fun doing photography all those years ago ? It reminded me of a day in Oct 1978 when I went to a camera shop in the Manchester and bought a Nikon EM , a 50mm Nikon Series E lens, and instead of attending lectures in the Uni, I went to Heaton Park and started taking photographs with the EM and a roll of Kodacolor 100. I had such a lovely afternoon whose memory is still fresh in my mind. I was thereafter hooked on photography. Now, I can't remember the last time that I used my Leica ms or the Nikon F3, let alone having fun with my hobby. Keep them coming Rog. I am loving the direction that you are taking.

@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss I may do. I lost a lot of my stuff in 82 when We moved house. Will have to have a look. It was done by Boots so It should be in a folder or or something similar.

when i went digital to the Nikon D700, i felt that i lost all inspiration on photography. maybe i need to go back to my F4s and get my ass back in a darkroom. there is something really special about developing and printing film. :) wish i had the space for a darkroom. :/
@alzathoth, yes, by the time you have reached page 16 of a 120-page digital camera manual, all inspiration to use the device is lost. Compare this with the nice, little booklet you get with old film cameras, where half on the practicalities, and half is advice on how to use the camera to make good pictures illustrates your point perfectly.
I have been dealing with that myself lately. What camera? What Film? What dev? Paralyzed by choice. So I decided to take one camera and one lens. Like you. What happened. I kept seeing scenes that would have been better with a different set up. lol. About the only time I don't find myself wishing for more choice in the field is when using my pinhole. Going to try to whittle down my collection to two cameras per format. I also now keep at least on of each format in the boot so I can choose while on location. Listen to us complain about too much choice. hahaha. Cheers Mate!

Funny about saying started off with rodinal. So did I. Actually just picked up a bottle the other day after not using it for years now.

I made quite the same decision recently : I'm trying to use only one film and one developper for a time. I will only switch between 2 or 3 cameras (I can't decide) ;)
I relate. I like choices and I hate making decisions. Deadly combination. I can ruminate for hours on choices. Is it the Pentax 67 or the 6x4.5 Bronica? Which TLR, Yashica, or Mamiya? Which Canon or Nikon? Color or black and white? Film or digital? Canon or Fuji? Which Fuji? That doesn't even get into where do I want to go. Maybe I'll just stay home and watch RUclips videos.

It's great to have choices, but as you've described, too many choices can be counterproductive. I have that problem with all the hobbies RUclips keeps trying to find for me. I have more hobbies than I could possibly have time for. I often sit, spinning my wheels, looking through RUclips video suggestions trying to find a video about one hobby or another that catches my eye. In the end, I often spend all my spare time on RUclips, and none on the hobbies I should be enjoying.
Getting to know one camera, film, and developer really well could benefit photographers from beginner to advanced. I'm just getting back into film photography. I should probably give that a try. Then again, experimenting with different films, developers, etc., is very tempting, and also has its merits. Life would be so simple if there weren't so many choices.
For an added twist, when you need a break from focusing on one camera, film, and developer, you could number your cameras, films, and developers and let a random number generator pick the combination of film, camera, and developer for you. That might produce some interesting and unusual results.

Agreed, I have two developers and two films.DDX, Perceptol, HP5 and FP4 respectively. Less is more as they say, and I agree. Bugger about the darkroom 🥺 as it's a sanctuary for us who Dev and print our own work. Glad to see your back in the forest making some nice images. I've made some forest images recently placing backgrounds on zone 2 sometimes 1 and using farmers reducer to pop highlights on the main tree stumps. Did you check out John Sexton??? Keep up the good work.

I've recently had some similar thoughts. I won't be sticking to a single camera but I have rationalised my choice of developers and films. For 2 of my cameras (holga and zorki) I'm sticking to a single film and developer.
I've largely stuck to 3 main cameras and noticed I have a "purpose" for each: Dynax 5 for less-thinking 35mm, SRT-201 for manual 35, and my all-purpose ETRSi 645. Honestly haven't touched most of my collection in a few months. Even then 3 cameras are too much to carry.

I faced the "choice" dilemma about a year ago now. I had great success at streamlining my kit by creating a spreadsheet. In that, I listed all the shooting scenarios I enjoy. I then mapped my cameras into that. I was brutally honest about where my strengths are and weaknesses. In the end, I have 3 "main" cameras (1 35mm AF/1 manual focus 35mm/1 MF SLR} and 3 "special purpose" (1 waterproof/1 pinhole/1 Instax). Each has a 2-3 lenses. For film, Portra and Delta, all speeds. I also keep one special purpose film around - Provia. DDX for the win! Cheers!

@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss It really did help with choice. Now I know what camera to grab depending on what I'm doing. I should have also mentioned that I did the same mapping with my lenses, which allowed me to cut down on those as well:)
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss Also, adapting Bronica lenses to 35 mm and to digital came out of that exercise. I had not realized the medium format lenses can be adapted to 35 mm and digital using tilt shift adapters. That has been pretty entertaining over the winter here playing around with tilt shift for the first time with that big image circle on my bronica lenses.
I enjoy shooting film with a minimal choice of options. I’ve only shot 4x5 with FP4 and have only used FP4 and HP5 for 35mm. I stick to ID11 for developer. I’ve got a few rolls of other film in the fridge in case I feel like a change, but they’ll probably sit there for a while.
ID11 is always in stock for me. As well as Rodinal
Great discussion, Roger. Sta you need a feline or 2 . I had a nice problem, several ago in the winter. Got 2 cats, no more mice. Ocassionly, I'd fine 1 on the kitchen floor, dead. They were doing their jobs. Yep I've settled o 1 film and 2 developers. Mostly use 2 , 35mm 2 medium and 1 , 4x5 camera from my collection. Thanks, Ken

For me now it's all hp5, d23 and a black Nikon F with the eye level finder, a pre Ai 50mm f2 and a k series 85mm 1.8.
Last year it was pan f in my om1 & om4ti cameras and a 35mm lens so this is a nice change up for 2022!
I chose the F6 over my others as it works perfectly, speeds and metering and is lighter than the F5 and more modern than the F90x. So I know when my negs get developed if there is any exposure issues it's more than likely going to be the development. I'll shoot it in Aperture Priority.
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss makes sense to remove as many variables as possible! I would also have accepted 'it's the greatest 35mm camera ever made' 🤣
for me it's a matter of choice of locations to...some times i feel like i dont want to go to same place over and over again...and that can feel a bit frustrating...not so much equpment choises but the lack of places to go to...if you know what i mean :)

I'm trying to light proof my own darkroom. Just wondering what were using to mask the inner frame of your doorway with? Was it black plastic? rubber?
As for choice, I used to have a fuji X100F and the good thing was I didn't have to think about it. Its a fixed lens camera. No need to worry about which lens to take or use or think about. It was kinda freeing.
It's black membrane for buildings. Heavy plastic sheeting and bubble wrap underneath.
I’m down to one developer and 2 film stocks. This leaves me with much more time to waste deciding which camera to take.
Quick question I've meant to ask. Do you keep all your negatives and where and have you any advice on how to properly store them.
I keep my negatives in ring binder folders like the one I showed here. They hang over very slightly out of the edge but never had any problems with that. I do keep all of my negatives unless I was testing out a camera or lens or sometimes I've been out taking pictures of nothing special and decided not to keep the negatives because the images are of nothing or the same as I have had before. There are negative folders you can buy online.

Unfortunately, the local cats use my garden as their toilet. I set big traps for the big mice (but you have to be careful about the birds and hedgehogs).
Keeping part of the leader with the negs is a great idea! I'm gonna start doing that too :-)
Hey Don. Yes it is handy to see. Especially if your developer is going bad you see pretty much through the leader against your computer screen.
Don’t you find the Owo too grainy?? Of course, you might enjoy grain! Everyone is different on this
It's great in the 510 Pyro. And pushed two stops to 400 the grain is pleasing not big.
...it's probably rats under your shed - they live in families of up to 10 - get some rat traps from Amazon for about £12, a bit of peanut butter.... job done.
Today now the winds have gone I bleached under the shed and also washed the floors inside. It's really not nice. Even my clothes smell of it. Horrid.
Cheap chocolate spread also works as bait. Traps in gardens may be dangerous for birds and hedgehogs, so you have to be careful where you set them, but yes, they do work.
