As a Chinese, I admire Martin Jacque for his knowledge, however, I don't like the tile, I am allergic for the word "rule", furthermore, Xi Jin Ping had elaborate his vision about the future of the world, a cooperative world based on collective decision making, for the common shared human destiny,....

22:30 Wrong, India has been united under the Maurya Empire, Guptas, Vikramadityas, Mughals (unfortunately) and British (also unfortunate).
But I concede, yes, more in a European manner, not even close to the 2,000+ year old strong Chinese civilisation state, I find that remarkable too.

You said it! TPP will fail! Wise man!
"You don't need to be an ally of China. You need to be an independent mind!"
    Abandon one child policy.
    Every thing comes true!

As an overseas Chinese, I am glad to finally hear some positive views about the future of the China from the West. While at the same time, it is a shame that a westerner understands and explains the China Phenomenon much better than the Chinese government themselves.

Because as stated the world has been dominated for 200 years so the majority of the media has been controlled and voiced by them, particularly in the language of English. The notion of China lacking of democracy has been circled for too long and it sort of embedd in many westerners minds, even some Chinese living overseas. For everything broadcasted or promoted by the government, there would be a dark suspection from the western media, e.g. The motive of one belt one road initiative has been distorted by them and portraited as a debt trap. So its better to have English speaking professionals who promotes the right picture of China. Surely it's just my observation that we can discuss if you don't agree.

I believe China is both a civilization and a nation. A civilization has a common ethos, but not government , authorities and formal laws. China has a common government, formal laws and authorities that apply throughout China. It is more of a nation in that respect than the US where states have separate laws and authority. That is part of their problem on the COVID issue.

About relationship between China and Japan, the Manchuria matter was closed and cleared once when the last time war was over. All Japan military commanders who forced brutal behavior were executed under so called the Tokyo Trial. Even Japanese think that what they had done was wrong, although there were complicated historical reasons that should be learned correctly by us who live now and don't know its details quite well unfortunately.
Japanese have created new efforts to contribute maintaining the world peace, of course with China too, and lead good relationships to cultivate the world economy during the post war. This Japanese attitude among the world order under democracy won't change in the future as well, I think.
I'll appreciate it as a Japanese citizen, however, that Mr. Martin Jacques picked up the topic and that I could have an opportunity to listen to the lecture on his China overview.

What he said is equally true today. One country two systems is the actual facts on the ground. The fact western states are having diminishing power over HK does not change two system reality. What a lot of imperialist western exceptionalists get wrong is thinking two systems is the same as western political influence in HK.
The central authority could entirely replace the autonomous government and still keep two systems, but they keep the autonomous region. The wrong one here is you.
