i chime in about your channel banner quote ”I choose a lazy person to do a hard job. Because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it.” this is a really great quote. i am such a lazy person, and i found such an easy way to a hard problem: the problem was "how to make the 'pressed' visuals for touchscreen keyboard keys, when the 'default' visuals were so time-consuming to make". i solved it by using just one 'pressed key' sprite each of the 4 key sizes, and not caring that the letter disappears because it's covered up by the typing finger anyways this experience opened my eyes to something that caring developers - the ones that are praised for their attention to detail - have to do, that i didn't know before: not only must they pay attention to the small details. they must also know when it's okay to compromise their attention to detail, so they can finish their project faster - 2023-01-06
Yes, I think it‘s a great way to get started. And no, not because its similarities to LOVE. It will be easier to transition to LOVE than just starting with it. But that is not why Pico-8 is great starting point. It‘s not just a stepping stone to somewhere else. It is a fantastic destination by itself.

Pico 8 just makes you think about game design in a very raw way. You can make an rpg writing it on napkins so tecnically you can make a very basic one on pico 8. You only have to think about what makes it worth as a game, what makes it fun to play.
This is probably a silly question. But is it possible to run this pico-8 dev app thing on a retrohandheld (i.e., miyoo mini plus or anbernic (android)) device? I really want to be able to use the music tracker on the go. That would be hella sweet.
Not on the Miyoo but you can on others. Tracker might be difficult to use without a keyboard however ruclips.net/video/UdcnljLOZEE/видео.html&ab_channel=LazyDevs

Sounds sus. Pico-8 has no "keys". You can't actually purchase the different builds independently from each other. Also the Pocket Chip came with Pico-8 pre-installed.

Yes. It means you over-scoped. Which is bad in any engine. At least Pico-8 stops you before it REALLY gets out of hand.

Custom font only for English.. scoresub without examples
Feel free to use the custom font feature for other alphabets. No scoresub examples because scoresub isn‘t actually implemented yet.
this trick of using custom fonts for unsupported languages is used in the real world, even outside of Pico-8
some governments of not so well-known countries make custom font for their national languages, so that the language can be used on computers.
in many of these custom fonts, the writing system overrides characters from other writing systems if the writing system is not supported in Unicode
especially beyond real languages, custom fonts are used to override other writing systems as needed:
many constructed languages have their own writing system, and they almost always put the writing system in the space that's meant for other writing systems (almost always, because Unicode has a 'private use area' that's sometimes used for the custom characters)
the same trick of repurposing characters through a custom font can be used in Pico-8, where it can be much more often useful. some possibilities are:
• glyphs → custom glyphs
• English letters → Russian letters
• glyphs → conlang letters
• Glyphs → some Japanese Kanji of your choosing
• Hiragana and/or Katakana → extra glyphs
i will never be able to use these with my cracked pico-8 :( and pico-8 is way too expensive!
It is quite cheap but if it's outside of your budget, the Education Version is free and always up to date. No need for piracy.
