Obviously Brennan is incredibly sweet and adorable in this story, but the thing that always strikes me when I hear it is how so many adults in Elaine's place here would respond with something like, "You were too nice and got taken advantage of; that's why sometimes you have to put yourself first." Which, to be clear, might be an appropriate lesson for a child in some situations. Those adults might even go so far as to say, "Now you don't get a muffin because you were too nice and didn't do what you had to do." But Elaine took the chance to explain that even if doing the right thing means you end up worse off because other people don't do the right thing back, that doesn’t change that it's the right thing to do. And then she went out of her way to make sure Brennan wasn't punished for his kindness, by taking him to school and coming back to get the muffin for him. What an incredible lesson for a child, what incredible parenting---and, for that matter, what incredible humaning.
I agree, he was nice, but the drawback of unilaterally doing the courteous thing when people aren’t going to recognize or return that courtesy, is that basically you get taken advantage of. He should have been taught the lesson that, to paraphrase Walter Sobchek “Just because I’m nice doesn’t make me a sap!”.
YES Random ass people kept telling me as a child "You're too sweet/naive" without offering context or explanation Thinking about it now as an adult fills me with rage, because now I'm constantly swinging between being too nice and too suspicious She literally did the best thing
This is definitely Brennan's origin story to what led to overall views on life. The relentlessly positive and kind person that Brennan grew up to be. It's why all his campaigns in D20 have some sort of overall lesson.
"You absolutely did the right thing. You just can't always depend on people to do the right thing back." Good line, well-phrased. I'd expect nothing less from a professional writer.
“What is it that the child has to teach? The child naively believes that everything should be fair and everyone should be honest, that only good should prevail, that everybody should have what they want and there should be no pain or sadness. The child believes the world should be perfect and is outraged to discover it is not. And the child is right.” - Rabbi Tzvi Freeman
We can all agree that Brennan is adorable in this story, but this clip made me realise that I wanna be Elaine Lee when I grow up. What an amazing woman and mom!

I know exactly what those adults were thinking, that the little child belonged to someone else in line. That's always what happened to me when I was in those situations.
But if you notice him standing at the back of the line, you would let him go first. They were probably just busy going to work and didn't care about a kid
The first adult through would know he's not theirs and should say thank you and hold the door for the next in line, who holds it for the next and so on.
I live in NJ and when I used to try to do things on my own as an 8 year old, I would get cut in line left and right. I don't really understand why but it definitely had to do with my age
My favorite part of this story is that it’s clearly been recounted so many times that she just says “the muffin story” and brennan has such a genuine reaction of someone who knows exactly how the next ~90 seconds of this conversation is gonna go
Damn, could have used that guidance when I was a kid. I held open so many doors for so long cause other people wouldn't hold a door for someone who needed it so I'd just keep holding the door until I was sure no one else was coming.
As a fellow big head, you would be correct. Most of our heads are the same size for most of our lives, and we wait for our body to grow into our heads.
Reminds me of a particular instance of me on a vacation when i was little. When we went for our vacation in a beach resort like 4 hours away from home, we always have some light breakfast before going down to the sea. And i volunteered to go bring back some omellets from the food stand (its a buffet like breakfast) and patiently waited until my turn. But i wasnt tall enough to be over the counter and hence i was jumping up and down go catch the attention of the chef who was making the omelette. He probably though i was just messing around and kept ignoring me, and i just kept repeating my order for the past 10 minutes. Until my father came to check on me, he furiously demanded an explanation from the chef and wanted to see the manager. He made it into a big thing and the manager got down to apologize and all that, but i was never 'glad' that it turned out this way, it ruined the whole holiday and we never went back.
Devil's advocate: when an adult sees a small kid in a shop they are normally going to assume that the kid is there with their parents rather than unattended. Tbf they probably should have taken the door from Brennan tho, but the ones that were ahead in line mightve thought "oh his parent must already be in the line/in the back of the line"
