Characters In War Movies You Didn’t Know Were Based On Real People

- Throughout its history as an industry, Hollywood has shown a remarkably enduring fondness for the war film. It’s easy to see why, as they often capture the horror and triumph of armed conflict, and the genre allows directors like Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino, and Christopher Nolan to showcase their talent.
Many of the best war films are those that draw on at least some real history to add texture to their stories, whether the focus is on WWI, WWII, Vietnam, or some other conflict. Oftentimes, viewers don't even recognize that the characters in these harrowing stories are based on real people.

I couldn’t believe Lincoln the vampire hunter was based on the famous vampire killer;Lincoln who was also less known for being the president
Not sure if it really counts as a war movie, but Master and Commander (and the books it was based on) are based on Thomas Cochrane, the 10th earl of dundonald.
I cannot recommend the entire "Master and Commander" series highly enough. (I know that's just the name of one of the books, but you know what I mean). They were exciting and even humorous at time. The nautical terminology can be a bit challenging at times but that's one of the reasons the books are so immersive. I plowed through the whole series in no time. Twenty books, I think?
Full Metal Jacket is one of my favorite movies
Damn right!
One of my favorites as well, so more weird history about the movie...
Hasford would later in life serve a three month prison sentence for hording nearly 10,000 (yes, TEN THOUSAND) of unreturned library books he kept in a rented storage space.
Stanley Kubrick purposefully strayed from historical accuracy when it came to the boot camp by wanting two rows of toilets on each side of the head to mirror the shots of the recruits to symbolize how they are in "a world of shit."
Full Metal Jacket was also indirectly involved with a court decision that resulted in the only time a song was successfully banned by the US government (later overturned by the Supreme Court) when the hip-hop group 2 Live Crew used a dialogue sample from the film for the song "Me So Horny."
Same here!!!
Everybody thinks that The Last Samurai title refers to Tom Cruise character but it actually refers to Ken Watanabe's character.
Yeah, i did. Kept me from ever wanting to watch it! Maybe i will now , thanks.
First of all, I highly doubt that a lot of people think that the title refers to Tom Cruise' character and second, I think the title doesn't refer to Ken Watanabe's character but Samurai is the plural form of the word.
@@pxlbltz When released, many people definitely did think the title referred to Cruise's character. Movie posters emblazoned with his face underneath the words "The Last Samurai" probably had something to do with it.
Ken Watanabe’s character is based on the samurai Saigo Takamori who did lead the final rebellion against ultra rapid modernization and westernization (to oversimplify the causes) in 1877. In Japan, they call him the last samurai. But the poster clearly makes the viewer (unaware that samurai is both singular and plural) think it refers to Tom Cruise.
@@michaelmurphree4972 I appreciate you recognizing Saigo Takamori. Very unappreciated. He IS The Last Samurai.
You guys should do the weirdest military operations ever conducted.
Private Ryan was not a captive in the movie. It's just that his unit's location was unknown.
I wouldn't expect anyone at Ranker to know, but the book From Here to Eternity was written by James Jones about his experience stationed at Schofield Barracks army base on Oahu on December 7th, 1941. It was made into the classic movie, starring Montgomery Clift, Burt Lancaster, Ernest Borgnine, the wholesome Donna Reed as a prostitute/taxi dancer and Frank Sinatra as Pvt Maggio which won him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Much of it was filmed on location at Schofield, where the Quad barracks still house soldiers.
I read the book and watched the film, fantastic book & film combo!
Isn't George Reeves in From Here to Eternity also?
My Dad was at Schofield Barracks during the attack.
There was a second character in The Patriot that is based on a real person. Mel Gibson's character of Benjamin Martin is loosely based on Francis Marion.
Correct. Also unlike Martin who treated his slaves well, Marion was a horrible master to his slaves and punish them severely.
He was such a horrible person that most of his slaves join the British Army since they would rather fight and die for the King than return being Marion's slave.
How about Sgt. Hartman in Full Metal Jacket is based on real Marine Drill Sgt. R. Lee Ermey. 😅
Shögun is one of the best shows I’ve ever watched. It’s straight up like GOT but in 1600’s Japan.
WOW, had not idea on a few of these!
No, Private James Francis Ryan was NOT being held, which would imply he had been captured, he was working his way through Europe with his unit. The point of rescuing him was his brothers getting killed in action which left him as the sole remaining son. His death would have meant the end of his family line.
'behind enemy lines,' now there's a movie i'll bet no one remembered
And if you saw it, it was on TV reruns, 1/5th of it at a time, because something better eventually came on. Just good enough to watch when nothing else was on the TV.
Is that the one with Owen Wilson?
Can we get this guys voice on my Alexa please?
"It's 5p.m. with a 20% chance of showers. SO WHAT DO YOU THINK?!"
I didn't know FURY was based on a true character. Remarkable
The Fat Electrician channel on RUclips has a video on the subject called "War Daddy" and his tank "In the Mood". It's a good listen.
@katelynnarn8743 thanks! I'll check it out.
Apocalypse Now is a must-see '79 film!
very iinteresting, i did not know most of these.
Private Ryan was never held captive
Totally off topic, but I swear this guy sounds like a younger and more playful version of David Mccullough (The narrator for Ken Burns' Civil War docuseries) I think that's part of why I enjoy these videos so much.
The Last Samurai is one of my favorite movies of all time, and now I’m a tad bit disappointed because i actually thought Nathan Algren was real🤦🏼♂️ oh well, can’t say I’m surprised tbh. Great video!
Couldn't get an American movie without an American in the main role, sadly. Also wouldn't fit the narrative of "surrendering Frenchmen"
There is a movie about Lightoller in a way. A Night to Remember features him heavily
Inglourious Basterds is one of my favorites. I never knew Zoeller was based on not only one but two soldiers.
A+ video!
LOVE IT! What a fascinating topic and video, awesome characters both fictional and real!
You should cover the Rhodesian bush war
You forgot my Great Uncle 3rd Lieutenant William "Bull" Halsey.
How fascinating a descendant is here to comment 😎 btw I think interesting that he's in one of these strategy games i played before 🤔 I'm sure of it
Is it just me or Daniel Brewer look eerily like his real life character
You kinda glossed over Audi Murphy who played in “To Hell and Back” where he was ….Audi Murphy
Thanks for this! 🪖
I was really amazed to learn that “Patton” (portrayed expertly by George C. Scott) was based on a real man named Joey Jojo Junior Shabadoo.
I had to Google the last samurai because I thought he was saying Oghren instead of algren
War movies. War movies never change.
Waterloo's five Sullivan brothers.🤔
War, war never changes
Hacksaw Ridge......
I'm not a war movie person I do like a few Patton and Operation Petticoat to name a couple
How about the movie "The Battle in the Bedroom"? 😉😘
Brad Pitt filming fury a war film, you would think he would have more respect, as he wanted to film on rememberance day, and was told he could not do so
It makes sense that the character in the last The Last Samauri is based on a Frenchman. because during that time a foreign nation would not look to the US for military instruction.
don't say that too loud, you might wound their pride !
Held captive, ryan was not captive
Biloxi Blues was based on real people too, I believe. Another World War 2 film, but interesting nonetheless.
Boshin War and Satsuma Rebellion in nutshell : Haha Armstrong gun and Gatling gun goes Brrrrrrr...
what about bat 21?
I thought Kurtz is based on the Belgian Colonial Officer Leon Rom in the Congo Free State?
Include Lt. Sean 'Topper' Harley, you cowards!
Richard Todd as Major John Howard in the Longest Day. Oh wait a minute, Maj Howard was real and so was Richard Todd. There is scene where an unnamed Lieutenant reports to Major Howard. Who was that unnamed Lieutenant? Why it was Lt. Richard Todd. During the filming of one sequence Todd stepped out of character to tell them they got it wrong.
I was under the impression this was common knowledge for most people since the previews, reviews, critics, commentary mention “inspired by true events. Lol
How about a video comparing M*A*S*H (TV Series 1972‑1983) to the novel by Richard Hooker, MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors that it was loosely based on
You left out the tenant colonel Kilgore from apocalypse now who was allegedly based upon Lieutenant Colonel Jack Churchill….
I was hoping Animal Mother was a real character
Very likely is based on a real person, just there is no information about them. Stone based Platoon off of his experiences. All Quiet on the Western Front is base on Remarque's experience in WWI. It's how they've kept the memories of their friends alive.
No man calls himself war daddy that’s been to war. Someone probably gave that name to him.
Love Last Samurai 💝 All of these movies are just deviating from history to make a better Hollywood movie 😅
Another character based on a real person that isn't on this list is Orlando Bloom's character in Kingdom of Heaven. He was real and was left in charge of Jerusalem when the crusaders went to war.
The siege of Jerusalem at the end was pure fiction though.
I know private Ryan was just here. Maybe instead of saving private Ryan, he’s getting his privates shaven. Strange things happen in the military.
6:35 I read Heart of Darkness, great book!
Heart of Darkness and Apocalypse Now is a great book & film combo!
1:22 My hometown has an old tank right by the Legion Club, they added it when I was in high school.
I am going to the high school graduation for my hometown today, which is on the same day I graduated with my Health Sciences Associate degree at Southeast Community College...the reception I am going to is at that Legion Club!
You forget we were soliders
3:20 I used to talk to Corkey Ford who played Manny on Platoon.
He is friends with one of my friends and was (at the time) very active in the dog network in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Windtalkers Nicholas Cage
Wait why didn't anyone from the infinity war make the list
Emasculated men arent real, especially those from Disney. Just ask Chris Helmsworth who almost always plays a character designed to be humiliated by a wahman in his movies.
It's messed up when our narrator Decides to not do it any mire this channel will die unless they replace him with someone who has a voice like this guy just a good narrator all around
5:30 Mel Gibson's breakthough role was as Max Rockatansky in the 1979 film Mad Max.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga comes out on May 24th!
6:24 There was a scene from Apocalypse Now that was parodied on the film Unfrosted.
Yay! Another one with the real narrator ;D
8:05 Jessica Chastain is the newest addition to my list of favorite actors (actors and actresses)!
Sgt. Elias was real and he was a Mexican American in real life. Hollywood did not want a Mexican to star as Elias.
When one "volunteer" during a war back then, does that mean he or she has no salary or benefits?
Salary, yes, depending on how much money the country or the general (or the nobleman or the king) had. For a while, Washington financed his army by himself. That's another reason why pillaging was so common in those times. Benefits - it depended on what was available. At the time, most countries had not any system of public healthcare, pensions, unemployment insurance, worker's compensation, parental or medical leave; so, whatever there was, it came from civilian charities or religious groups.
Please notice that now, in civilized countries, those are not "benefits," but legal rights every most workers with a contract have, and independent workers too, depending on their country's laws. Chilean here. I worked independently for many years. I only had to contribute a 7% of my income to have full healthcare in the public system. When I had no income and I couldn't contribute, I still had a right to basic healthcare for free. It's good when your country doesn't beat you up when you are already on the floor ✌
7:13 Matthew Modine is the most underrated actor!
Black Hawk Down features a star studded cast and EVERY soldier portrayed is a real individual. Probably would take 20 minutes to go thru everyone in the movie. Also, in my opinion it’s the best war movie ever made.
Why doesn't Tom Cruise just come out? Is it because he gets kicked out of Scientology?
Lightoller’s actions during the sinking of the Titanic were idiotic to say the least. He cost the lives of hundreds of men. Murdoch is the true hero of the Titanic.
I knew.
Eating ANOTHER Weird History meal!
Eating COOKIE CRISP CEREAL*†...while watching this Weird History video!
Chip the Wolf is the mascot for Cookie Crisp!
* From the Weird History video "Why Was the 80s the Golden Age for Sugary Cereals?"
† Cookie Crisp Cereal was released in 1977. (wikipedia, Medium)
Keep eating junk my friend...you are eliminating yourself.
9:42 I added The Last Samarai to my June Watchlist.
2:23 Saving Private Ryan and Titanic were two of the biggest films of 1998, the year I graduated high school.
No reason you can't get 30 in today, you got nothing else going on
@@Dave-bj3pq No reason you can't be more productive.
I'm upstairs with your mom, get out of the basement & mow the yard.. I can't do everything 😂
@@Dave-bj3pq You have Your Mom written on your hand, that's who you're fooling around with.
Boo-hoo the little girl reported 😂
Behind enemy lines was the worst casting I've ever seen in a movie. Who in the hell thought Owen Wilson could do anything other than stand there and be funny? LMAO
10:37 The Longhorns are the mascot of my public school (which I attended from 1st to 12th grade).
The mascot was likely from the University of Texas, the college Owen Wilson attended.
Owen Wilson's brothers have the same name and order as mine: my older brother is Andrew and younger brother is Luke.

Um, Private Ryan wasn't held captive. He was with his unit and elected to stay with them.
"Last Samurai" represents the 'death of honor' within the empire of money worship. (western civilization)
I highly recommend you to check the channel Let's Ask Shogo. A real-life Japanese man talks about traditional culture and social problems in his country. He praised The Last Samurai for its mostly accurate representation of his culture; he also points at the mistakes. At any rate, *way* a better film than 47 Ronin in that department. Shogo also has a video about how Bushido has been the bane of modern Japanese - not many countries have people dying from overwork at offices (Karoshi).
I would also recommend the movie Fear and Trembling (Stupeur et Tremblements, 2003). I bet you would not resist to work in an office like that - which is highly representative of how Japanese working culture is - thanks to Bushido.
The sarcastic jokes suck now...
How I feel when I hear this narrator in a Weird History video and not the other one: 0:26
I love your voice!! Take better care of it, please? Sometimes you don’t sound right. ❤
4:46 Murphy is a name in my father ancestry, one of my paternal great-grandmothers had that family name.
Downey is also another name in my family ancestry, both Downey and Murphy were family names that won the best actors awards at the 2024 Academy Awards.

Man, I really love the movie "The last Samurai"...but can't stand Tom Cruise.
The actor or the person bc I love his acting and for an actor I feel like that's all there is but that's just me

It is in Columbia (the same name as the production studio of the film).

The best war movies are no war movies.
that was deep.
No the best war movies are comedy war movies, nothing tops Tropic Thunder.
War is fun. It gets your adrenaline pumping like nothing else.
War is horror. The best war films are scary, and make you sorry that boys became men under such stress.
Real
Oh come on. Fury? Seriously? It was unwatchable because of the ridiculous scenario. And i thought this channel had good taste. I guess not.
