  • A song on cognitive dissonance and self justification to help my students study for the upcoming AP exam. The song's lyric ideas were collaboratively created via a student written wiki from which I arranged and formatted into this song. I had help with the artwork as well with Allison Winslow contributing 'the dumped guy' and Victoria Banos contributing the fox and grapes.

No, the video isn't asking people to blame themselves. But rather to understand that human beings have a tendency to avoid blaming themselves through justification.

fox and the grapes. it's a fable. relates to the phrase "sour grapes", when somebody doesn't get something they want, and they say "I didn't want it anyway" to feel better and reduce the uncomfortable dissonance.

I really enjoyed this simple but accurate description of cognitive dissonance my social psychology professor suggested us to watch this funny video before doing our weekly class forum.

I love how simply and clearly you explain CD and the justifications that allow people to continue doing or believing the same ideas. Would love to see a 2nd video about being presented with a belief that contradicts the previous one and then changing the behaviour this time to match the new idea....as opposed to justifying a bad habit.....just a thought....:)

I actually don't use the sour grapes analogy when I'm rejected by a girl. I can't have any idea of what the girl is like, and all I had was just an attraction of appearance in the first place. I could have been rejected by the best girl for me. Maybe I was the "best" for her. What might make her uncomfortable is if I say "You don't know me as a person." It's up to her if this phases her. And, of course, I don't know her personally, but I'm trying to. n the end, I dn't knw and she dosn't.

    (2) On a serious note, what ever happened to good ol' fashioned reality?
i.e. "I'm a smoker. Yes, I know that smoking kills, but we are all appointed to die."
"She dumps me, and to be honest, I'm not the most handsome or coolest guy. It would be self-evident if I really was."
"My team lost because we all made too many mistakes that cost us."
"I can't reach the grapes because I was not meant to climb trees or jump very high."
"I hate boot camp. Every Marine hates boot camp!"

Well said, but mostly the person afflicted has no idea it's happening. It's a paradox, almost like someone built on the desire of self deception, an innate ability to hold conflicting beliefs about something while never realizing it.

What do you mean by mental alibi? I think what your actually describing is denial - not cognitive dissonance. You can have cognitive dissonance without being in denial. Cognitive dissonance often happens when people are forced to contend with existential extremes or information that completely challenges their understanding of reality often the opposite ends of a spectrum of an argument. You have to wrap your mind around very complex subjects that force you to reevaluate what is normal or not normal which results in an awkward stage where you lose your "anchor" to reality. You then have to re-establish "norms." Cognitive dissonance can more colloquially be described as a mind-F***.

      @wraybm1  6 лет назад

Robot Rebellion denial is Freud’s term for a piece of a psychological phenomenon that Festinger later explained more thoroughly through dissonance, self-justification and attitude formation. This song is mostly about the self-justification that many people use to relieve the cognitive dissonance within themselves. This book is a great read on it www.amazon.com/Cognitive-Dissonance-Years-Classic-Theory/dp/1412929725 as well as this one www.amazon.com/Mistakes-Were-Made-But-Not/dp/B004HQM5S8/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1528749798&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX194_SY279_QL65&keywords=mistakes+were+made+but+not+by+me&dpPl=1&dpID=31dEpbcb-1L&ref=plSrch

I absolutely love this, but I do have some criticism("Dissonant!").
    1) The marine shout is "oorah", there is no "H".
    2) The characters representing ignorant and stupid ought to be switched, logically.
    3) (More of a suggestion) At 3:29, sating "Semper Fi!" would've been a lot more humorous.
I don't even care about the grapes on a tree, honestly.
