I'd say the longest traffic jam I can remember in the US was during the Hurricane Rita evacuation. At least 2 million people from the Houston area were stuck in traffic for as long as 24 hours!
I grew up in Houston and I was fresh out of high school back then. I agree that it was probably the longest traffic jam in US history. There was definitely traffic off the charts on the highway most especially I-45 going toward Dallas. This historic devastation of hurricane Katrina from weeks prior had definitely influenced Houstonians in the area to evacuate over fears that they would get stuck.
It's because of that one stupid stop light in Corrigan, Texas. I know because I experienced it trying to get to my job in Diboll. Once you get past that light, the traffic was better.
