We are dealing with a war, in which the Russians have killed hundreds of thousands of people and have taken land from Ukraine. Ukraine has not been able to push the Russians out of Crimea nor the Donbas. These are facts, not opinions. Putin wanted to take all of Ukraine; he failed, and he will settle for a ceasefire as long as he retains the land that he has stolen, Ukraine does not join NATO, and Russia does not have to pay reparations. I think the key point is to allow Ukraine to join NATO. Since the fall of the Russian Empire aka the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia has attacked the only three former Soviet Union European republicans that did not join NATO: Moldova (1993), Georgia (2008), and Ukraine (2014 and 2022). Any treaty signed with Putin is toilet paper. Putin would violate any treaty as soon as he thought that he would have a chance of gaining more land from Ukraine. Only NATO membership would guarantee that Putin would not invade Ukraine further. And Moldova and Georgia should be members, too.

Britain's 100 year pledge to Ukraine is laughable. It is like Britain's Challenger tanks and Storm Shadow missile. Britain talked about them as if they were game changers.
But now Starmer's talk is to 'strengthen Ukraine's hand at the negotiating table'. They do not talk about winning, it is about saving face !
Ukraine has been foolish, but it should learn from this experience not to trust 100 year pledges - from countries where rulers change every 4-5 years, such continuity is not possible. The change between all out support (for however long it takes) to no support was only 4 years.
Ukraine was foolish to believe it will have support for however long it takes. Ukraine should not fall for 100 years support from a non-power. Britain's military capability is no more than Estonia's.
The sheer doublespeak of the British when they talk about 100 year support is amazing.

The UK is one of the signatories to the Budapest Pledge in 1994, together with the US and Russia, which guaranteed Ukraine's security and territorial integrity as a substitute guarantee for Ukraine's abandonment of the nuclear weapons it inherited from the Soviet Union. Now that one of the signatories has betrayed the pledge, the US and the UK should be obligated to return the nuclear warheads that Ukraine has abandoned to them.

    • @I_Stole_A_BTR-80

The nukes were returned to Russia...NATO didn't put any nukes on Ukrainian land while it was a part of the USSR.
What you're asking is for the UK and US to steal nuclear weapons from Russia and put them in the hands of Ukraine. I think that would trigger a global conflict mate. But maybe you should try doing that if you think it's such a good idea.

No, but obviously the West should be demanding Russia give the 300 nuclear weapons they owe Ukraine. Given they have rejected the Budapest Memorandum, they should be consistent about it. Give them 2 years to complete the transfer with the promise that if the weapons are not transferred the West will supply them and send Moscow the bill (taking it, with interest, through sanctions)
