The 38% rule is a rule of thumb in acoustics that states that the best place to sit in a rectangular room is 38% of the way into the room from the shortest wall. This rule is intended to minimize standing waves and is most effective when speakers are mounted in the wall.
Some other rules of thumb for sound include:
A sound needs to increase by more than 3 decibels to be noticeable.
For every 10 decibel increase, the apparent loudness of the sound doubles.
The size of musical instruments changes rapidly over a few octaves. For example, a flute is about 26 inches long, while a piccolo is about 13 inches long. The piccolo plays one octave higher than the flute because it is half the size.
