- A neighbor was trying to get the cats in her backyard fixed, but she couldn’t find an affordable spay neuter appointment. So those cats had more cats. These marshmallow poofs were just four out of several thousand kittens that are born outside in Brooklyn every year.
Mom was fiercely protective of her little nuggets, and we were thankful that she could raise them safely indoors. A life of luxury for all! We promised this family - and so many more - that we'll prevent more cats from suffering outside or waiting around in shelters.

Yooo, what if you came up with a plan to use cats to control the rats in NYC?
Spay and neuter all of them and tag them with a chip and setup little safe shelters that open for the rfid tag in the cat. Which would have warmth, food and water.
The city is willing to spend money on rat control. That could be a great way to help all the shelter cats.

There are very few breeds of cats that would go after rats! Most of them don't want the risk of getting bitten; they know better. NYC does need to come up with a better plan to control the rat population. As in, more traps in hard to reach places and the personnel to collect the dead ones.
@@touchofgrey5372 I did not know that, then maybe a good way to home the ones that are hunters, is to give them the chip and a outside home as well as matching them with a primary human. So they can take them for regular check ups and stuff, but the cat gets let out of the house to roam still. Just ideas, I love cats, they’re the shit. Just want to help.
Honestly, I’ll prob be volunteering in the next year when I’m in Manhattan more often.

Beautiful kittens and Mumcat is an odd-eyed white. Absolutely stunning and hope they all got good, loving homes.

In our country odd eyed cats are €1500,- and up! 😳😨 I am SO GLAD💖 they found her before someone took her to make her a breeding cat
@@janevandervoort6507 26 years ago my cat got out before I had her spayed and she had a litter of 5 kittens. She was a black cat but 4 of the kittens were white and one was tabby and white. Two of the white kittens were both odd-eyed - one green eye, one blue eye, another had the palest blue eyes I've ever seen and the other kitten had green eyes. The green eyed kitten was the only one that was deaf. We kept them all and yes, they were all neutered and spayed. We lost the last of the litter, the tabby and white cat to old age in 2018. She was just shy of her 21st birthday.

White cats are the most adoptable followed by colorpoints. Seems like people have white supremacist taste when it comes to cats. I myself am partial to flamepoints.

My family did that a number of years ago when we owned cats that would permit strange cats in the house. We fostered 22 cats that year and we called them rental cats. We only had one foster fail, but giving up that first litter of kittens had the entire family in tears. It got better over time.
I just realized that my failed foster cat just turned 18 in October so it's been that long ago. Thank you for taking in your own rental cats. It's rewarding work.
Such sweet babies, momma included, I had a white kitty, she was my soul mate, she was almost 23 years old when I lost her, when I see these little ones, I pray they get good homes, every living thing flourishes with love.

I see animals get mistreated all the time and the sadness I feel for them is so strong... But people would just look at me strange here if i share such feelings... I feel so alone

Temporarily fostered 2 kittens to a petite & friendly mama who knew her babies were being kept warm indoors. She came very frequently, we'd let her in to feed and bathe them, but she, herself, would not stay inside. We were also feeding them while they took over our front living room, enjoying all the old cat toys, scratchers, and 1 of 3 old cat trees. Two male brothers, always wrestling, learning to climb, jump, roll, and hunt whatever rolled across the floor! Very enjoyable, very tiring!
As stated in your video, there aren't enough low cost spay/neuter facilities in any town, all with appointments made 2-3 mos. out. I made appointments with all of them, including our regular veterinary hospital and a couple of animal clinics, some charging $200+. Luckily, I knew of an organization that fosters and adopts out stray kittens from their own homes, having been through this in 2019 with 4 kittens. As soon as the 2 kittens were 2 mos. old, they were able to take them, spay them and find homes. Our senior cats are relieved of no more kitten chaos, and we got mama spayed for only $75.00. She still comes by, but just for food and scratches.
I don't think I could be a rescuer. I would get too attached to the babies and end up living with 100 plus cats. Lol.
You have to think of the fostering job as taking care of them until they're big enough and healthy enough to be neutered and move on to their permanent home. You miss them at first, but often you can get some follow up email pictures so you know they're ok, and there are more kittens soon.
It's much harder to foster senior cats who get used to your house and have such a difficult time finding a permanent home. THOSE end up staying.
I'd be happy with a couple of my own cats and fostering. but yeah, they all have different personalities so it'd be bittersweet to see them go if ya get attached.
@@machinismus Bittersweet is a good way to put it. It's an important and necessary thing to do, (also kittens are great fun) so I try to answer the people like Roxan who virtuously say they would keep them all. I have pictures of every one though.

An attentive Mother is a big plus - our last pregnant rescue cat didn't really care much - she fed them a bit, but we had to take over after a week - we literally did almost all the work, LOL.

I am french-british following you from Denmark. I think you all do such a wonderful job and all I can say is thank God you're not in Alabama. I just read in the Guardian about 2 Alabama cat saviour ladies arrested for trespassing. Sometimes you have to keep very calm when faced with administrative ignorance.

few months ago a cat walked by our shop when it was like 105 out side, gave her some food and water. that went on for a week or so when out of nowhere she brought her 3 kittens up to us. took care of them, got them adopted out and got mom fixed. now we have a shop cat and she is the sweetest thing

My wife and I run what amounts to an accidental home cat sanctuary in Slovakia.
We take on the cats that no-one else wants, from pets that have been dumped in our village to old warriors looking for a safe and comfortable retirement to kittens found and handed to us or born on our premises.
All are spayed or neutered at five months and receive all veterinary care as and necessary including regular anti parasite treatments.
I pay for everything myself and do almost all the hard work of looking after eighteen cats. It is very rewarding and I feel we are making a worthwhile contribution.
Philip Townsend, you might enjoy the WalterSanti RUclips channel. It is set in Turkey, and the presenter has 3 indoor cats and 14 outdoor cats. All the outdoor cats were strays.
