Mrs Dalloway is one of my favourite books! It introduced me to Virginia, who now is one of my most beloved authors and someone I feel a deep attachment too, even if she was no angel, she sure was a fascinating person. I love how much care you put into your videos, they make me want to read more carefully and do more research about what I read. I don't know if I've commmented about it before, but I would love to see you make a bookshelf tour video! Your shelves look so good in the background, I'd love to get a closer look at them and how you organise your book collection :)
Lovely to hear Mrs Dalloway and Virginia Woolf are some of your favourites! She was definitely an interesting person, her diaries and letters show! Thanks very much - glad you enjoyed the video :) That’s a lovely suggestion - I thought about it a few times and wasn’t sure if people would be interested. Thanks for letting me know - will bear it in mind!
Thanks for your engaging video. I read Dalloway many years ago but you've motivated me to reread, and the background insights from her letters and diaries are fascinating. It makes her years of writing it come alive.
Nicole, such a wonderful video, well researched and indeed informative. I have read Mrs Dalloway, but am fascinated by her diaries and letters. I should pursue reading them sometime this year; the inspiration being derived from this video. Thank you Nicole. Looking forward to your lovely videos throughout 2024.🌞🪔🌹
Thank you Anil! The diaries and letters are fascinating aren’t they! Hope you like them if you get to read other letters and diary entries of hers. See you around :)
I loved this video! Woolf is one of my all time favourites and if you haven't already I highly recommend her To the Lighthouse. This made me want to re-read Mrs Dalloway.
Mrs Dalloway was my most hated book of all time for a while because I was forced to read it in a week at university. When I gave it a second chance and re-read it while taking my time to chew it over, I was very impressed and totally changed my mind :)
Sorry for the slow reply! Interesting to hear your experience with Mrs Dalloway :) great to hear you gave it a second chance even when you hated it so much!
Thank you for this presentation! Not only because it provided new insights into Woolf and MD, but it reminded me of the time I first read the novel. I already had downed To the Lighthouse and my favorite Woolf book, Orlando. But I was curious about how Woolf handled contrasting Septimus with Mrs. D. One chooses to live and the other self destructs.
Pleasure! Did you enjoy it when you read it for the first time? How did you find it? Interesting to hear that Orlando is your favourite Woolf book - I’m still trying to decide :) Hmm, a very big question I’m not sure I have the answer to! I guess the surface level observation is Septimus has serious symptoms of mental disorders and suffers from unhelpful doctors, while Mrs Dalloway has a ‘perfect’ life and THE party to distract her from the thoughts of death - maybe?
Orlando seems like Woolf's love letter to English literature. The way the protagonist transforms from male to female corresponds to the move from "classical" (Pope, Johnson, Swift) to "romantic" (Blake, Keats, Byron) and then the modern age. I know there is a personal aspect to the novel, but that's what I think Woolf's main purpose was. I liked Mrs. D when I encountered it, but it took getting used to. TLH was easier to adjust to. All the non fiction by Woolf is worth your time, especially the essays in The Common Reader. Keep reading!
@@donaldkelly3983 Oh yes! I forgot about the changes of styles in Orlando - I need to read it again. Yes! Will keep reading the essays and keep reading in general haha. Thank you!
I listened to your first video and this one. Do you intentionally work on diminishing your accent or is that progression natural? Your English has always been perfect, I don’t mean to imply otherwise, but your accent used to be stronger. Your pronunciation has become more precise.
Very kind - thank you! My English is never perfect and never will - sigh! I haven’t worked on my accent intentionally but encouraging to hear it has improved over the last two years :)
Wonderful video! Well done in every aspect. Thank you! I love your channel and eagerly look forward to your presentations!
Thank you! Glad you like it :)

Interesting to hear your thoughts. I haven't read this one yet - only To The Lighthouse and A Room Of One's Own
I feel like Mrs Dalloway is easier to follow than To the Lighthouse - I really struggled with some of the chapters in To the Lighthouse!
@@adayofsmallthings That's good to hear. I was totally lost!
