Chikankari embroidered clothes, are much sought after Iamong the sophisticated crowd in Cochin and Bangalore. Sadly, there are just a few outlets in these places and they have a monopoly on this craftwork, selling these pieces to their clients at ridiculous prices. If only these hard working , extremely talented craftsmen were given proper Government assistance , this heirloom artwork will never die . It's potential is vast and need not been confined to apparel, but could be used as curtains or dreamy table cloths, napkins. If only some one would come forward , and do something for them, after understanding what a shame it is for these gifted craftsmen who have divinity in their hands, to seek alternate employment as rickshaw drivers just for survival. Can Dastkar or the Handicrafts board of India , not do something constructive for these Lucknowi chikankari craftsmen to continue this matchless legacy,? There are so many online sellers from abroad who are making a fortune selling many of our traditional craftwork. And these craftsmen are giving up an art ,--- which is in their blood.--out of sheer desperation. Really saddening.
You are absolutely right I feel this pain inside me of our dieing crafts there's also a craft called kalamkari which has almost instinct I feel so so so bad people have really forgotten what a quality piece of clothing looks like
