I became an alcoholic the first time I drank at the age of 14. I would drink until I passed out, or got sick, or both, every time.
    9 yrs. sober.

I’ve consumed an incredible amount of sobriety talks on RUclips the past year. No one is even remotely close to the accuracy you have in describing the dark progression alcohol has in life. The slow invisible degradation of everything that matters in life. Thank you for sharing your story.

It is the saddest thing to me when I see people that cannot separate themselves from their addiction. They are two separate entities inside your brain. Once more people can begin to realize this, that is when they can truly become a fully recovered former addict. Not just a permanent alcoholic/drug addict "in recovery". Addicted people must change their beliefs about addiction completely in order to recover.

I don't know why this popped up on my suggested videos. Oddly enough, I AM a person in recovery from drugs and alcohol. God willing, May of this year will be 8 years without a drink or drug. That being said, I don't normally watch "recovery" or alcoholism/addiction related content on here, but for whatever reason your video popped up via the algorithm somehow. It's only an hour after upload with only 1 other view as of right now. As far as people on RUclips (and in life) talking the will power thing... I always attributed alcoholism and strong will being the equivalent to taking a laxative and willing yourself not to shit your pants. You hit the nail on the head brother. Keep empowering others, and keep on keeping on doing your thing. Don't drink. Help others. Do the next right thing. That's the key.

People that are forced into therapy or AA do not get better because they are still coping and fighting against their anxiety and depression, instead of accepting their circumstances. For someone who is still very much ego driven and unreceptive to advice, they will judge this video and be repulsed by it. For someone who is in open mind, this video will be wonderful for them. It’s very unfortunate but I feel like the only way people become receptive to therapy, AA, or any type of outside help is after they hit their rock bottom and have no choice but to scream out for help. Especially for people that are so deep in the hole, they are living in complete denial like I used to.

What a nice guy and an excellent video. It is not easy to discuss these things I am sure. I found that I used drink because it made me feel better, I was less socially awkward, my anxiety was more controlled but I really did not like the loss of control. I would never describe myself as an alcoholic but then who does. I found a therapist to help with my feelings of low esteem and the awful anxiety inside me and have spent the last 4 years on 10 mg escalitopram (I think it is called Lexapro in the US) anyway, this medication does not affect me in any negative way but does remove the anxiety and depression. I drink socially at weekends with my partner and friends but never when I am alone, which does make me feel like I have some control over the alcohol. I know that I have an addictive nature I cannot go anywhere near gambling because I know the reigns will come off. I do not own any computer game consoles because I know that if I start playing 2 days will pass by before I next eat. So for me, staying away from these temptations is a priority. Porn and sex was more difficult to control in the past because it was easier to access but again since being on medication this constant craving dropped dramatically and I just feel more like the person I am supposed to be.

I agree with you about a lot, but I don’t subscribe to the philosophy of AA because I find it to be sort of cult-like. I have a severe drinking problem, but it’s really just a maladaptive coping skill for dealing with mental and emotional pain. As far as my life not getting better when I’m sober that’s not true for me, but it doesn’t necessarily feel better because that pain is still there. I definitely fit your criteria of an alcoholic, but I don’t call myself that because it just further erodes my self worth. I’m just a person who copes with negative emotions through abusing alcohol, and it’s a serious problem.

Honestly look within to find the answers, but there’s no work. Simply allow yourself to be, without judgement. Be aware of your thoughts, feelings and actions is where there is change. Looking for the answers outside of yourself is the wrong place, you’ll always be seeking.

    • @David.Masson
      @David.Masson  11 месяцев назад

I agree 100 percent that the answers are within. But it requires "work" to find them within. To be able to just be without judgment, aware of your thoughts and actions is way easier said than done. In my case, I had way too many defense mechanisms protecting my ego and way too much emotional baggage weighing me down and dictating my thoughts. The work I did helped get rid of enough of that baggage and remove enough of those defense mechanisms so that I could just be. If it was as easy as you make it seem to be, everybody would just be able to flip a switch, and it would be done.

The worst thing you can ever do in this situation is lie to yourself and become a functional addict. Next thing you know a decade zipped by and your health starts to decline and the consequences of use start popping up. Inevitably you end up with severe irreversible damage to your body and you still get pulled to the same fate all active addicts face at some point: jail, institutions or death. If you need help just get started on it, you'll be glad you did, don't hide it because you'll pay serious consequences later in life.

From my experience most alcoholics I've known are the type to run away from their problems and indulge into a lot of escapism. And they don't have the mentality of fixing their problems or improving things themselves.. usually dependant mentality. Working on your problems isn't easy. Its hard work and it's hard to be self motivated/ independant. Also they tend to be the type to look outside themselves for happiness..whether it's things or other people or ideas. But reality is happiness is only achieved within yourself. Another person or thing or idea won't ever make you happy.

It's good when you work , I find being a bum as I am at the moment with mental health issues . I tend to drink heaps more and go more insane around people that live with me . I use to think it was ok drinking alone at home , but now I'm starting to realize even at home isn't good . I think if no ones around you then it might be ok I guess . One drink always leads to another for me , yeah I never intend to upset people and sound crazy . In my mind I'm about to drink , I have this rush I get . Then the day pans out into stupid shit . I'm 45 this year and I'm such a nut job . Always put all my gfs off me . Flatmate was accusing me of being on drugs the other night and I just went off at him through the wall , because he kept saying my name and trying to wind me up . Ok I know I shouldn't be using certain drugs , but why would you want to wind me up . I think what I do in my room with myself is my biz no one else's . He's not my fcking mother . He done it to me several nights and I just kept silent on it , but that one night I just snapped because I drank a bottle of wine and a bottle of tequila and Titanfall 2 brings the worst out in me sometimes . The game just made me snap . I know what I should and shouldn't do , I guess I'm my own worst enemy . Lucky he didn't beat the crap out of me tbh . He's huge and a boxer lol . Guys like over 10 years younger than me and built like a brick shit house . I said to myself I'm not touching drugs as long as he lives here , next minute gf offers me some . So the little devil inside me says fuck it ill do some and fck that prick . Should of never used it . Such a fail my behalf , I think I might just say na I'm good next time lol . Because otherwise ill just nut off at someone again . Lucky I didn't get arrested tbh . Meth is such a shit drug , the problem I have is I use to be quite addicted to it , so it doesn't help when ya flatmate waves in ya face for free . Wish she never got that shit in the first place , she's a bad influence . As an addict I tend to just take any drug if it's for free . Just for a different feeling in my own mind etc . I guess booze is just as bad you could say , nothing good ever comes from getting rekt .

I wouldn't assume they hate you. It's common for Alcoholics to assume they know what other people are thinking about them.
I personally don't think AA is toxic. There are toxic people there, yes, but there are toxic people in every environment and that will never change.

There is no hole that Jesus christ can't fill. He is the creator of life time and is the solitary source of Love. He gives it for free because He created everything for that purpose.

Jesus said “Happy are those who are conscious of their spiritual need”. He knew what he was talking about. If that was good advice, what else did he teach that’s good for us?

@@marknewton6984 Exactly - all about what you want to do. Simple as that. Every decision we make to enjoy whatever vice we might fancy, is a conscious and deliberate decision.

Real talk. Appreciate the honesty, you really got it. This is creating positive ripples. And good to highlight the difference between being sober and abstinent. 🫂 much love.
