i think the reason people are told to avoid sugar is that sugar spikes up the insulin level in your body and when it goes down you feel lethargic. the food we generally have contain natural sugar in it like fruits and vegetables. Those natural sugar are good and result in lower insulin spike. The calories in sugar are not the main problem but the insulin spike it causes is. Therefore it is considered best to avoid processed sugar.

I have been using jaggery for last 2-3 months instead of sugar and I feel less lethargic, my digestion is working better and my sugar cravings are also massively reduced plus it tastes good as well.
