The compulsory purchase of domestic property in, say the 1840s, was very common place and amounted to thousands of houses being demolished. Today, it is so unusual. Heaton Lodge cottages were beautiful buildings. No one could afford to build like that nowadays. Although I am in favour of the electrification in what they call The Transpennine Route Upgrade, it is very sad that the realignment of the fast lines at Heaton Heaton Lodge Junction has seen the end of these beautiful houses.
Hi Pete, apparently Network Rail are demolishing these cottages in order to widen the trackbed at Heaton Lodge and to flatten the radius of the curve of the Lines coming from the Huddersfield/ Manchester direction, so that Trains will be able to achieve 100mph on this section of the Trans-Pennine route. There is no housing planned to replace the Cottages here. I agree that it is a travesty of justice to see these beautiful Railway Cottages torn down along with ALL of the other distinguishing features at Heaton Lodge Junction. The place will soon become a very plain and characterless shadow of its former self as the Cottages go along with Clayton Footbridge and the LNWR double bore tunnel / bridge that carries the Calder Valley lines over the former Leeds New Line alignment. Very sad to see and I don't buy into all of the hype of the TRU project, I think it's all a very expensive white elephant that will ultimately fail to deliver INCREASED CAPACITY as promised. Money would have been better spent on reinstatement of heavy rail to the Spen Valley !
The cottage are simply worth demolishing for a matter of minutes. And you are right. This once thriving railway yard will have nothing left to speak of how important it was to the area.
It's insanity to destroy railway history. The 🔔 ends from Leeds Council or whoever has said these cottages are to be pulled down need to be locked in mental homes for the rest of their lives. To destroy these buildings is utterly despicable.
When Planning permission is not granted they would just get set alight, remember the Wonky Pub? Too many listed buildings in Kirklees have been burnt down by the people that own them.
Demolishing those cottages, thats not right...who's making these decisions and why isn't anyone questioning them..!!! and surely someone will save the bridge, if it's moved somewhere else....
went past on the train yesterday, the cottages have been pulled down but the footbridge is still there for now, nothing short of vandalism :(
Yes I w been told the cottages are gone and they should have been listed buildings!!

what a travesty such beautiful architecture but thats progress i suppose.
The progress here is losing something worth saving. And sadly only the memories of locals of what was once here will remain for a generation.
It's criminal to demolish those cottages
Absolutely. And the process has started this week!

@@normandunford5747 Agreed;. The cottages are now gone and the bridge awaits its turn.

It’s an absolute farce that these are going!! And I believe someone tried to save the bridge but couldn’t find a home sadly.
