Gaahl era is the best to me, not that I dont like the rest (because I do), but Gaahl brought a mysterious weirdness to the band that drew me in further to black metal of all kinds, in addition to opening doors like traditional Scandinavian folk music and a heightened interest in the intellectual side of this genre. Just my two cents, for what it's worth. Although the new live stuff with Hoest is pretty awesome, too.
@S.M.B Not really, at least not that I know of, kinda one reason why Gorgoroth is popular in the genre, cause its unique. Sometimes bm gets closer to dissonant/heavy rock but I don't think it's really a thing for bands. Gaahls has other bands though, like Trelldom and Gaahls Wyrd that both tends to be more scandinavian folk/rock but with still bm parts as well.

Gorgoroth's discography is exquisite during certain periods of their career. They did the early 90's style black metal properly and these later albums are so much more complex and well made.
