The most amazing thing about this film is not that it took the piss of everything that Nick Giannopolis had ever done and would ever do... but that it took the piss of Fat Pizza 11 years before Paulie Fenech even thought it up.
Perhaps Paul fenech didnt think anything up... He just took inspiration from his idols, then rehashed a decade old, one horse joke. Sick mate / Sweet maate!
"but just how did this young ethnic shift into the white Anglo Saxon neighborhood of showbusiness" "September 11...." Wow, what an uncomfortably random date to pick, who knew eh ;
"Champagne comedy" was a catchphrase used on the Late Show - from which this clip itself originates - usually as an ironic toast to a stupid joke or skit of particularly bad taste. These days it's used by TV nerds of a certain age to signal that in the early Nineties they too spent their Saturday nights at home watching the Late Show, and Monday mornings annoying everyone with pissweak Rob Sitch impressions.
Yes it was - I've been trying to find that Current Affair story too. From memory, the send-up of the confrontation did mirror the real thing. The original woman was very bitter about her treatment and I recall Giannopoulos saying that when she dumped their act, he "hit panic stations" but obviously took off from there. I've always wondered how Nick felt about this skit.
Nick Giannopolous would have hated this so much. The Late Show was a critical success back then and while Nick’s comedy may have been making him money, he was a total hack with no credibility and for these guys to write and produce a skit that was nothing more than a thinly-veiled jab at him would’ve been completely humiliating, but it’s so accurate
@@bafg182 I wouldnt be too quick to think that. Back then, as a greek, I thought it was bloody funny. Every greek I know thinks its proper gold. Even today we still laugh whenever we rewatch it. Dont think I've met anyone who was offended by it. He would have had a blast doing it.
This is true. In an interview on a panel based current affairs show, he said that he did copyright the word, "Wog". However, the comedian in question stated that this copyright only covers comedy and stage shows. Perhaps it was not done because they are egotistical, or because of creative differences with people they used to work with.
i *think* the confrontation bit was based on an actual current affair ( or some show like that) where nick giannopoulos was confronted by former 'colleagues'? I'd love to see the original
If i did'nt know better i'd say this is a swipe at another Melbourne comedian who had a hit stand up show in the 80's. Now let me think......SWEET MATE!!!
Does anyone know the background / true story of the conflict shown at 5:25? I seem to recall something like this from the late 80s but I was a kid so can't remember fully.
It doesn't matter if it offended you or not..it was racist..Look at Kamahl and Hey Hey it's Saturday..These characters were punching down and it was cringe. We haven't moved on ..it's 2021.

[5:19] 'She makes me feel really good about being a dumb slut' - a line that will go down in infamy.

Wow, what an uncomfortably random date to pick, who knew eh ;
He was breaking down ethnic barriers and holding up a mirror to multicultural society.
semptember 11 1982 ....a day id never forget
Way to go Santo.....great sketch.
Eat your heart out Nick Giannopoulos.
"Wop, Spick and Jump" oh my GOD. This remains a timeless piece of awesome and probably Santo's finest moment.
+Mike Flattley Champagne comedy.

Yep Santo did this proud.
Also, "Hear no evil, see no evil, spik no evil (sic)" - in the newspaper.
Pure Santo.
"New Guinea's a goer...Jackson 5 impersonations" and "Bucks!" Rob Sitch has an awesome cameo as does Nick Bufalo.
This is brilliant!! Turning back the clock to the 90's! It's made my day!! Thanks for putting it up.

You can take the boy out of Brunswick but you can't take Brunswick out of the boy.

@@bafg182 Preach and he was lazy as another film is coming out in 2021..Go figure. Money is his agenda. Hilarious
The best bit of this on the commentary is when they mention an Australian comedian tried to copyright the word "Wog"...wonder who that could be!

He predicts September 11
I can't remember the guy who is is the partner of Santo in this (who does the "Bananas!" bit) - Nicholas Bufalo? A very underrated comedian.
@Tone. Nick Bufalo was my favourite, great timing and fast on his feet
First time l ever saw Nick Bufalo was when he played a vet on A Country Practice.

*clap, clap* BANANAS!! hahahaha
You made that comment without his permission, he's going to sue you again
I can't believe they actually found someone to say that.....top line.
If you listen to the audio commentary they said they got into a lot of trouble because of that line and the sketch nearly got pulled!
Which line?
breaking down the ethnic barriers
Classic- gotta love it!
I added the *whistle* to the end.
Heavens, the Late Show were brilliant.
not that the money was important to me, hey XD
I have the exam same problem with volume 2.
I ended up re burning the disc from the original and just watch that one
and alllll my friends are getting Mazdas...

Santo love!
Was this all in reference to nick g and co trying to tradebark the term 'wog' in shows due to their wogs out if work stuff?
I said i needed 4 turks and a ch___!
September 11! Ahh
Sept 11, 2001, how's that for a date to remember?
@Dubiousjohnny
c'mon this was 1992 - things are different now - but not better. I'm a wog and it didn't offend me.

@@melsmithmelwell, that's the joke. Connie is Effy. They're parodying what other "wogs" were doing and how they justified it.

Yes it is.
