That's great! It helps me put things in perspective, too. It's our first major contribution to research, it makes sense that it won't be our best! Plus, most of what we read is by experienced scholars, so our standards are way higher than necessary!
Check out james hayton's video "the basic principles every phd student needs to know" it helped me when he said phd is the fist step or entry level to a topic you're not expected to master it
I've been working on getting better on my Zettlekasten system (in terms of actually doing it and increasing the frequency). It's such a godsend and it makes writing papers easier because I have more of those moments where I'm like, "Wait, I already reflected about this, I have a justification for why I'm approaching this assignment this way!" and "This connects with this and that's why it makes sense." It makes me feel like I'm actually developing my own body of knowledge, not just parroting what other people say.
Yes, yes, yes, exactly! It's such a relief when I find out I've actually already put thought into something. And honestly, it makes parroting what other people say a lot easier, too! :P
@@morganeua Oh definitely! I don't catch myself just quoting straight up anymore, I know there's always an interpretation or a connection to a different idea coming right after that.
Another great video, Morgan! One tip: Using the graph view to look at everything, your "orphan" (unlinked) notes will show up around the edges of the herd, and then you can click on them and get them linked to other stuff. I haven't done the random note thing much, but I do look at my big graph frequently to try to get those orphans integrated.
On a related note, I just got accepted into my own doctorate program this week, so, all this is going to shift from theory to practice real quick! I feel much better equipped thanks to your videos!
I just wanted to say that I really love your videos! I find that a lot of people talk about note-taking and 'second brain' type of stuff abstractly without really showing what their actual workflow or actual notes even look like, so this is super helpful putting stuff into practical use for me. :)

I wanted to share what I just wrote in my own obsidian vault after reading an article that reminded me of this video. Though you might like to see how your videos inspire thought :) --
In his article *How to Have Fun Thinking with a Paper Dictionary*, Austin Kleon describes using a paper dictionary as a playful thinking tool. He starts with looking up a random word that something he was thinking about made him think of, and then follows where it leads, in terms of see also notes, looking up other words that come to mind, and seeing words that are in proximity to the ones he is looking at on the page.
This makes me think of [[rzettlekasten]] and [[linked notetaking]]. In particular, it makes me think about the many ways that the zettlekasten and linked notes allow one to store, find and stumble across knowledge and information. The playfulness of Kleon's article also brings to mind a recent video I watched by youtuber morganua in which she took randomized zettlekasten notes

Thanks for the video! I just started using obsidian, and the idea of being able to make webs of information is so amazing to me. I have to build up a lot to get there (I have a grand total of a dozen notes in it right now), but I'm excited by the prospect. Once I get enough notes built up, I'm sure the random note function will be more helpful for me. Thanks for showing it to us!

this is awesome! I had never heard about the Zettlekasten system before. Really looking forward to learning it and using obsidian more efficiently. I had a questioin about how you would incorporate information from classes on here? Would you label it through the class or through the texts that the class engages with? what about ideas that emerge from the class itself? thank you again for this wonderful information

This PhD student thanks you, again, for another great video! 🤓 I noticed that you use aliases and tags. Can you direct me to which videos discus using these features? Also can you provide a strategy to use tags? I haven’t touched them as I am afraid I’ll make too many of them.
Penn Jillette also said that in order to do an invisible second deal first you have to cap a mutha, so his performance advice may be a bit extreme. 😊

I have a note taking problem that I'm open to hear anyone's suggestions. I love notetaking and writing but I never read them again. Whenever I do that it feels like I already know everything and I am wasting my time. But I forget them when they become useful in the future.
Hi, Morgan. I am a fan of yours from Indonesia. Thanks to you I started my Zettlekasten in Obsidian 2 years ago and even though I still don't know where it will takes me since I have multiple interests, your videos has supported me to pursue another degree and start to write my academic writing for my bachelor degree even though I just started the class for two weeks.
I am so curious to see how you write your permanent and literature notes. As you talked before, you said that I just need to write all the source note and made a literature notes after I find an idea. However, I made my literature notes as the compilation from every resources I've read and write my takeaways as permanent notes and it makes me confused when I connect those ideas. Did I do something wrong that makes me lose connection ?? Or do you have any suggestions to help me expand my notes? I would love to hear your advice

@@morganeua Your communication is more clear, the content to the point. Especially for people who are not advanced into second brain techniques and tools, learning from a video can be confusing. I see you also used time lapse, a timer, etc , changes and turns that keep one's attention in the focus span ( some are using joking remarks to that purpose, but not everyone likes them). Overall, gestures, voice, pacing, etc, your are better at presenting as well. Also your focus on what you're explaining I think gives it authenticity. Good job. Thanks. Oh, and hair cut! It's awesome 😀

I never left Obsidian! Obsidian is still where my main zettelkasten is housed. Scrintal is a sponsor of the channel, so they give me free access to their app, and I use them more often for planning projects (rather than note-taking and writing itself).
Very nice, nice showing of the linked and unlinked starting points... 10mins... imagine what a more traditional Pomodoro session could bring... you never seemed to be 'flagging' at the end of the 10 mins. BUT, you seemed also to be mostly reliant on your memory of things, hidden somewhere, without existing links sparking others, maybe.
The unknown and unpreparedness... is this not a good case for forming a crosslinked set of links and/or an aliase even. Aliases, something you haven't said much on... recently.

So now you have good progress on the PhD writing, etc., to do this 'other' stuff, is there not a case for you to have time to write new notes from 'random' reading of nonPhD literature, not just this random note resurfacing... Possibly even some from your fiction reads too.
