Farm Dad - thanks for the super informative video. I have to keep 3 cars going and something is always messing up with one or all of them at the same time, so I am forever pouring over possible tutorials that might help me and sometimes doing that can be just as taxing and frustrating as the actual work. Your video was both encouraging and articulate, I wouldn't have tackled it if it wasn't for your help. One stumbling block I ran into through my ignorance was dropping the tension pin out because if the CV joint is at a certain angle there is no room for it to drop. It took me a while to figure out that joint can be rotated by turning the rotor. On reinstalling the belt and trying to put enough up and over tension on the belt to line up the paint marks to the cams, I cut some tight shims from shakes (apron. 3.5 x .75 inches), I had several and starting at the bottom of the cam shoved one at a time in and upwards which put just enough pressure to force the belt up and over each sprocket, landing the paint mark on the TDC corresponding mark. The shims were then wedged in tight enough between the engine housing, the belt and the cam to prevent everything from rotating as well. Anyways a big toast to you, your family and your dirt road.
Glad to hear you were able to work through this and like the way you did the shims! I respect people who keep their own fleet of cars on the road. Thanks!
I have just completed my timing belt using this video. It went pretty good. While I had a good idea on what I was doing this video passed on some great tips!
Thank you so much for your video. My wife’s water pump was leaking so I first watched it to see if I wanted to do it and with all the detail and great video You took it gave me the confidence i needed. Took me like 10 hours (mostly because i checked your video repeatedly to not make a mistake or Do extra work) but my wife’s van is back in the road for a fraction of the cost of a mechanic. Ive done a lot of water pumps but i never saw a setup like that van had with the timing belt involved but Once Again thank you ! it was a great video and thank you for making it .
Great video and nice work. The best tip was about removing the spark plugs, makes rotating the engine *much* easier. The only thing I would do differently is to put a washer or two to compensate for the thickness of the balancer while turning the crank when putting its bolt back in. Have seen several engines where the tolerance is tight enough that the crank bolt bottoms before the face engages without the pulley in place. I learned the hard way myself, so I always share that whenever I can. Great days to you and your family !
Thank you soo much! this is the best how to video I have ever seen I was hesitant about doing this timing belt until your step by step video , you rock!!
Well my wife’s 4l grand caravan needs the water pump and time belt done. Your video is pretty good. Can’t see some of it very well due to the camera angle, but you did way better than I would of. It a lot of work to replace. Local mechanic wanted $1000 for just the labor. I am going to start it this Friday after work and hope to have it done by Saturday evening.
A lot of tight spots for a camera, but I think once you get in their you will see what you need to do. Good luck. This is definitely worth saving a $1000.
Brilliant work 👏 appreciated I have replaced the water pump on my car after seeing your video, with all support from Saudi arabia Thanks again for this video. Good luck 👍 brother 🙏
@@FarmDad it sure did, I'm in the process now of trying to rotate the engine two times to make sure the marks line up. That back cam near the firewall is hard to judge since you're looking at it at an angle.
Beyond Awesome video. I'll be doing this same thing this weekend. Without this it was going to be exploratory surgery now I'm going to be whipping it out much faster.
With your video and having so many torque spec listed out and sizes as you went i did this in about 5 hours. Had small struggle getting new belt on and lined correctly but nothing terrible. Thank you thank you for sharing.
When taking the timing belt off and making sure the camshafts don't move....are they very easy to move or does it take some effort to accidentally move them? Thanks for the helpful video!
Thanks for posting this! Are u sure about not moving the camshaft? Obviously u don’t want to rotate either very much but what about moving it 1/2 to 1 tooth to get it to grab the belt in the correct place and then put back to the timing mark, that would make installing the belt and lining everything up quite a bit easier.
You can move it slightly without worrying about hurting anything, but be sure to have everything back in the correct place once the belt is on. Thanks and hope this helped!
Great job!! I just bought a 2010 with a 4l. I think I will replace timing belt, transmission oil change, thermostat and rebuild the alternator. Just so I don’t break down. Any more recommendations?
Great video! I'm getting ready to pick up a super nice 56K mile 2007 Sebring with the 3.5 which is exactly the same. I can't find any videos doing the belt specifically on a Sebring. It looks like there is less room but still pretty accessible with the side engine mount out of the way.
Well you did a nice job with what you did. I'm thinking I'm going to replace the waterpump but now maybe along with belt like you did. Just not sure really because I don't know if it is waterpump or head gasket? I'm down to intake now gonna clean it up tmmrw and button her back up but since I'm down that far I'm thinking of change pump and stuff if I do it'll be your video I go off from. So thank you!
Does the timing belt tensioner come out without removing the axle? Since you have the transmission out, obviously the axles have been removed. I'm at the timing belt tensioner step and the axle is in the way. I'm hoping I can use another jack to push the axle out of the way using suspension travel.
So u have to take apart the serpentine set up to get to the timing belt? I'm experiencing a whining sound coming from what I was thinking was the alternator or the timing belt. The van has 190,600 miles on it. I was hoping it wasn't gonna be the timing belt. I'm not ready for all of that.
Engine is reliable but transmission is not. I prefer the 3.8l in the town and country though because it has a timing chain instead of a belt and I really can't feel a horsepower difference between the two.
@@FarmDad belts don't have timing marks he did this to get the belt tension right the first time . You don't need to mark the belt it's exactly the same 360 degrees around but this marking makes placing the cams and crank pulleys in sync without be a tooth off . You can also count the ribs and mark it before pulling it off .
I don't believe I did. It's been awhile so it's hard to remember, but if I didn't show it in the video I didn't do it. Some kits come with cam seals and some don't. If I didn't it was because the kit I had didn't come with any.
If you have the timing marks in the right place why do you need to put the belt in the same spot that it was in before, why should that matter? Doesn't the tensioner actually adjust the tension on the belt, can you explain, somebody?
I was changing water pump and turned engine over on accident with belt off. is engine dead. I was just trying to turn steering wheel to rotate tire cause tensioner wouldn't come out. Help please
Question is....when to do this maintenance ? A certain amount of mileage or is there a way to inspect it's condition before removal ?? Maybe you said and I missed it. Thank-you.
Hi great video taking time of your life to share this it’s very kind my question it’s how often or when should the Pivot tensioner arm 4663515ac be replace the part you were putting in 27:00-28:00 thanks
Thanks, I should mention there is a reason farm dad did it like he did, it saved me no time at all if not cost me time in fiddling. I just didn't have the means to support the engine. Very well done DIY though!!!
I need a water pump at 108k miles, AND, replacing the timing chain. I’m being told this is general maintenance. I agree, but the water pump is not run by the the timing chain, it’s independent and has its own pulley. If the timing chain/belt is not replaced at this time, what’s the worst that could happen? It starts up fine and is moveable. 🆘!

Is the engine reliability on these better than the 3.5 Odyssey Wich the Odyssey has issues with premature cam lobe wear and ticking sounds?
Engine is reliable but transmission is not. I prefer the 3.8l in the town and country though because it has a timing chain instead of a belt and I really can't feel a horsepower difference between the two.
What if I did the water pump and didn't line those up can I take it apart and fix that
Yes
Thanks for the help one more question did you have to take it for alignment and where can I get torque specs
I did not need an alignment. Any Haynes or Chilton manual will have torque specs or you could probably google for specific ones you need.
Puedes subir un video how replaced heads gasket town country 2008 4.0 please i need help🙏
Does the serpentine belt connects to timing too
No, two different things.
They’re called trim removal tools. More gentle than the metal hooks.
I have plastic trim removal tools too. The metal work so much better for removing fender liner clips.
I wish you could do how to change an oil pump
Not sure if I missed this, but did the new belt not come with it's own timing marks?
I don't think it did.

I don't believe I did. It's been awhile so it's hard to remember, but if I didn't show it in the video I didn't do it. Some kits come with cam seals and some don't. If I didn't it was because the kit I had didn't come with any.
I wonder if a 2014 town and country is similar?
I believe they use a 3.6l with timing chain rather than belt, which won't be a service item.
@@FarmDad thank you.

I was changing water pump and turned engine over on accident with belt off. is engine dead. I was just trying to turn steering wheel to rotate tire cause tensioner wouldn't come out. Help please
Yes it is interference
If it was a full rotation, you likely have valvetrain damage.
Nice good job 👍😀

You really shouldn't use the marks from the old belt because the belt is stretched out
If it was stretched enough to cause a problem with the marks, your engine wouldn't be running.
