    So true about “creating a rapport” I’ve done it so many times collecting physical media, DVDs, and music cds from ebay and pawn shops. No matter how much digital comes along in the modern age I’m such a physical print freak. I’ll never stop. Great advice and points. Thank you.🤍🖤🤍

    Loved the video. You expressed your points perfectly. I can't think of a thing to add (well, maybe Library or Book sales). I've got to "shop behind the counter (and the backroom)" as well.
    If we lived nearby each other, we'd be deal hunting buddies. I'm in Vermont so I have to drive to NY or NH (or Mass or Rhode Island) for more buying opportunities. 2019 I went on vacation and I end up at a flea market and find a killer collection of Sci-Fi DVDS. Only problem was the collector ahead of me scored a good portion. Still, I has able to buy a bunch. Then I'm spending 30 mins walking to a post office to mail them back to me.
    I literally have ZERO money into my collection from buying and selling of the ones I didn't want....only time invested.
    Ok, I lied about no other tips. I have found & bought my 2 BEST collections this way: This goes under your idea of persistence. One was found on Facebook Marketplace and the other was on Craigslist. It's those...annoying ads....when someone is selling a collection but either has no pics or one very useless, burry pic or you get a strange reply sounding like they are no interest in selling there stuff that they advertised.
    Here's the 2 stories: The first was blurry pics, the movies were in clear cases that appeared to replacements or video store stock. They said how "there are no kids movies", etc. When I got there, it was an AMAZNING collection. An affluent collector special ordered movies all the time and had died and a sibling was selling the collection off. He bought special cases to store them in but all the original cases are artwork were still there. 75% of these movies were rare titles. Apparently no one bothered to go look at the collection. And it was a giveaway price at 50 cents each.
    Second best score was FB marketplace. Guy list 3000 movies and only shows a picture of a trailer. I ask for pics of movies. He won't send one. I ask price. He won't give one. I gamble and go look. Turns out it was a closed video store that got stored in said trailer. I ended up paying $250 and when I counted the 3000 movies, it was over 7400 DVDs. If you do the math, that's less than 4 cents each. Anyway, great video.

      Thank you or the kind words! Libraries and Book Sales are definitely things to look out for, good call. You know shit's real when you have "behind the counter" connects, haha! Isn't that the worst when someone beats you out by a minute or two?! It's happened to the best of us. Holy crap you got some amazing deals... I'm feeling jealousy, haha! I'll have to keep an eye out for these suspicious craigslist ads! Thanks for the tips, and thanks for watching!

    Fantastic tips Mike.
    I couldn't agree more with all of your tips.
    The one that I would like to stress also is building a rapport with some of the folks that work at pawn shops & flea markets. After they get to know you they will probably put things to to the side to give you first dibs on them. Especially if they know your taste in movies and genres of movies.
    And I have my best relationship with a guy that runs a pawn shop and believe it or not FYE.
    I try to stop by at least twice a week at both. I've got to drive by both of them on my way home from work everyday so it isn't out of the way by no means.
    At FYE Rachel who is the manager and Casey who is assistant manager.( I do believe that they both subscribed to your Channel )
    Always will put to the side all horror movies and any Anchor Bay movies that come in for me to go through before they put them out for the general public.
    And the same from Sammy at the pawn shop.
    I will from time to time go to his pawn shop with a box full of DVDs and just give them to him.
    And by the way Mike I have already flipped the Larry Hagman TV movie Hurricane DVD I got about 2 weeks ago for a nice profit.
    As always Mike a fantastic video and looking forward to your next one.

    • @theboredcyborg
      @theboredcyborg  4 года назад

      I wish I had an FYE in my area, but it's about 45 mins away from where I'm at. Thanks for sharing my channel with them! When I found that same Hurricane DVD, I popped it in for a bit, and quickly determined that it was worth selling for the 20-30 profit. Didn't seem too hot, lol! I don't blame you. Until next time, my friend!

      @AM-iy7cj 4 года назад

      @@theboredcyborg I try and turn on as many people that I can to your channel Mike.
      Unlike you I did watch the complete Larry Hagman Hurricane movie. That is one problem that I do have once I start watching a movie it's hard for me to just stop watching no matter how bad it is. Because in the back of my mind I'm saying it's got to get better, it's got to get better. But I did make a $75 profit on it. And you are correct it wasn't so hot but it definitely did blow. You see what I did there?
      Take care my brother.

  • @willieg7895
    @willieg7895 4 года назад +2

    19:00 that is true, it's very unlikely you'll find every movie you want out in the wild. For the most part, I found just about every movie from the past that I wanted to find but not all out in the wild. Found alot of them on ebay, at DT, goodwill, big lots, and the Walmart dump bins for less than $5 each and when a new release comes out, i only preorder the ones i really want. And now it's important to keep all your physical copies of your movies with everything that's going on with movies like gone with the wind nowadays. These past movies I speak of, most of them cannot be made today without offending a certain audience.

    Cool vid. You didn't mention one thing that should be common sense but people often forget. When shopping at pawn shops and thrift shops make sure to open the case (if possible) make sure the disc is actually in there and is in working condition. This is especially important for DVDs since they are usually older and scratch easier than blu ray.

    • @theboredcyborg
      @theboredcyborg  4 года назад +1

      This is a good point, for sure. ALWAYS check the inside of the cases to ensure its even the right disc, let alone condition! Wise tip right there. Thanks for sharing, and for watching, Wendell!

    Blu Rays for 2 bucks and UHDs for 3 or 4 bucks? I am definitely living in the wrong country. It is absolutely impossible to find UHDs in Germany for this price. They sell them for nearly as much as they cost when they are brand new. Same goes for Blu Rays. If you are lucky, you can find used Blu Rays at a certain online reseller for about 3 bucks, and often, the prices for used Blu Rays are as high (or higher even) than new ones. Let's sum it up - cowboys and Indians, the most impressive landscapes I can imagine, Hollywood and crazy prices for movies. I HAVE to live in America. I was in Maine once … liked it a lot …

    • @theboredcyborg
      @theboredcyborg  4 года назад

    I got a serious question. I enjoy your videos and am a collector of things myself. But every so often I feel like I have entirely too much shit piled up everywhere and get rid of bunches of it. How do you not feel cluttered out and not have a single purge of your collection? I normally regret having gotten rid of the things I purged.

    • @theboredcyborg
      @theboredcyborg  4 года назад

      Good question! I have a lot, but almost everything is displayed in hand-built shelves that line my walls. So, I never feel cluttered. In terms of purging, I do this at least one a year, getting rid of things I'll never likely watch. And, if I watch something and deem it non-worthy, it's gone. I have to be sure, though! Thanks for watching, John.

    2:49 I love buying physical media but I also love online streaming. Let me explain. I do online streaming because I like to know if a movie is worth buying before I buy it. I have a whole list on my notes app on my phone of movies I want to watch before I buy them. So I figure why not stream the movies I want to see online for free & if I like them I add them to my list of movies I want to buy which I also have on a note on my notes app on my phone. Then when I go out if I see a movie on my movie's I want to buy list if I can afford it I'll buy it. I've been doing this for about 4 years now & I own about 110 horror movies. I know that it's not that big of a collection yet but it's getting there

    This is one of those topics where I say, I wish i knew now what i didnt know then. Started collecting dvds in 2005 and didn't start buying blurays until 2015. Until 2017, I never knew big lots, goodwill and dollar tree carried dvds and blurays and before that, I was buying all my movies on Amazon, walmart and target. Been buying them from big lots, goodwill and DT since 2017 and been hoarding up on them ever since.

    • @MikeHorror67

      Big Lots was really Awesome with their selection back in 2006-2010 era (they'd have multiple big displays of dvd's/box sets back then). I found seasons of Tales From The Crypt for $3 each. They had a bunch of Hanna Barbera titles(seasons & complete series) for $3 each like The Flinstones, Scooby Doo & Space Ghost. They had the History Of Rock And Roll 6 dvd box set for $6. I bought about 8 of them and gave away 4-5 as gifts. I still have 3 or 4 sets and now new on Ebay they sell for about $50-60. I still buy there but never find things that good anymore.

    I just recently started selling in eBay almost 2 month ago. And your tips are absolutely correct. From paying no more for a couple bucks for used media, to the correct description listing. I'm selling just the stuff I accumulated over the years and my double dip copies. An example, bought Mac and Me VHS at a Goodwill on Friday. Listed it, and Saturday already had it sold. I'll be shipping it tomorrow. It's not a way to MAKE money really. Just a smart hobby if you can make the extra time. Great video man. Keep em coming.

    Speaking of dropping knowledge... as someone who doesn’t have many of the ‘in the wild’ options, your thriftin’ videos, and this one in particular, are really insightful.
    I’ve been doing a horrible job when it comes to my hobby! 😓 Hehe. I always followed the last step, but aside from “gas station deals,” not so much the others. Online stores used to be _the super cheap option_ compared to the awful, PAL-pitched, no-extras Region B releases... until local distributors and stores finally caught up. Also in the last few years - more eBay, deals, lots, and even finding a lone thrift store with a couple of used discs before, well, 2020 happened. Thank you for the video.

      @theboredcyborg More and more venues are becoming available. Last year I bought a ton of titles from someone who was moving to a smaller place, or a house... anyway, boxes of movies. But due to my “n00b” status as a seller/trader, I ended up having all the discs I didn’t want around for months. Including the entire Twilight saga. 😩
      That’s very true. Stay frosty!
