Im from Wisconsin and fell in love with an Irish girl while we both were volunteering on a kibbutz in Israel! I had a University degree in Agriculture! We traveled overland from Israel to Dublin, where I lived with her family for 5 months! This was 1981, (Bobby Sands Hunger Strike), and the Irish economy and unemployment was terrible, no way could I find a job! Life Happens! But damn, did I love Dublin!

My husband also from Ireland but the North but half his family lives in the south. We are in Canada, he is a police officer and we are thinking of moving to Ireland to be closer to more family and enjoy a simpler lifestyle.

Im Irish, met my PA native wife in AL and we now live together in Ireland with our two young daughters.
Biggest draw back for Americans able to move here is you still gotta file your IRS tax returns and if applicable, pay your US taxes on top of your Irish taxes!

When I received my dual citizenship four decades ago (Ireland registered me as a "foreign birth"), I was told by the US government that dual citizenship would not be a problem but that there might be a problem if I voted in an Irish election. Of course, that was the US policy decades ago, and things may have changed.
Regarding Trump and the LGBTQ+ "rights," I don't think he really would have much to do with that. A lot of those "rights" pertain to more local ordinances and state laws, and some of them would be adjudicated by state courts and, possibly, federal courts up to and including the US Supreme Court. Trump himself has said very little on the subject. I think that people conflate his position with those of some of his followers, particularly in the fundementalist churches, in very red regions - and those followers existed as much during the outgoing administration as during the incoming one. And, as we know, the Supreme Court already leans heavily conservative. I just don't think Trump has much to do with the subject other than federal court appointments... and those appointments have to be confirmed by the Senate, anyway.
And as a gay man who came out of the closet 35 years ago, I believe that a lot of our so-called "rights," as they are called in the media, aren't rights at all. I think the pendulum has swung so far that it has almost become unhinged. I think it is time to self-correct rather than continue to provoke hostility.

@@timward3116 hmmm I’m trying to see where you’re coming from Tim but idk. I guess I get stuck on his contribution to the conservative SC bc of his appointments (even if they still had to go through senate approval); bc if they make decisions on cases that then leave those issues up to states (and no longer federal protection [womens autonomy and health care related issues]) and certain states fail to protect women…. There’s already not enough understood or studied about women’s bodies and health, that is specific to women. We live in a world that’s catered to men mostly and that also reflects in healthcare (for example how women can get pregnant 72 days a year but men can impregnate 365 yet birth control has always been forced upon the woman etc); I could go on of course (and obviously there’s much complexity to …. The world….) but this is too hard of a space to converse lol

@@mcginnsteph Hi Steph! I think, for example, that what happened several months ago at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York provoked hostility. A leader in the transgendered community had died, and the deceased's ""community" organization tricked the parish into hosting a funeral Mass. The church filled up with trans and gay activists, and one of the speakers spewed vulagarities from the lectern as the helpless priest stood by and my so-called "community" laughed and cheered. Then the priest announced that the Mass portion was cancelled. I watched it on RUclips. It was disgusting and of course provoked hostility.
The hedonistic and freakish gay "Pride" parades are another thing that dehumanizes gays in the eyes of straight people - and there is no "straight Pride" parade, after all, because that would be seen as hateful. Having different standards for different folks is hypocritical. Not to mention that is the kind of thing that is in-your-face and evokes disgust/hostility.
Then there are those cases where person A sues person B because person B won't do what person A wants them to do (the wedding cake scenario). Person A could just as easily find another baker or, God knows, bake the cake himself/herself. This kind of stuff unnecessarily provokes hostility and makes one the slave of the other.
And then there's the so-called "gender-affirming therapy" for children who don't conform to society's definitions of female and male. The term "gender affirming" is a euphemism for castrating non-gender-role-conforming youth. It marks them for life, and if they're not old enough to smoke, drink, drive, and vote, they're not old enough to consent. To push this agenda isn't "far-left" in support of LGBTQ+ rights. Instead, It's an insidious far-right corporate attack on diversity and each child's natural uniqueness within the bodies they were born into. Naturally, this constant drumbeat that we were hearing for the better part of a decade would provoke hatred and resentment. That said, as adults, people should be permitted to make up their own minds after considering their options - and those who transition freely and should be treated with respect, love, and non-judgement.

On citizenship, you need 5 years residency normally but only 3 years if you are the spouse of an Irish citizen. As a US citizen you can have dual citizenship, in fact there are more dual Irish-US in the US than there are people in Ireland.

  • @peterincork3121

It's an absolute no brainer to get dual citizenship, even if you don't stay in Ireland, it gives you easy access to work and live in the EU. It won't affect your daughters as I think they're already on the Foreign Births Register, but let's say you all moved back to the US, and they married and had kids, then it's vital those kids are registered on the Foreign Births Register (before they have kids (vital !!!), so their kids (!) would be entitled to an Irish passport too. Once a generation is skipped, the link is broken and the further generational entitlement would be lost. The Foreign Births Register is so important.

I was born in Michigan and got Irish citizenship from my grandmother who was born here I vote in all Irish elections and all American elections also no problem. Life here is so rewarding and it was very easy to integrate into society. Americans can vote in US elections from any country in the world.

You can hold Irish US dual citizenship. I'm in Ireland and one of my work colleague's has dual US German citizenship. Because Germany and Ireland are both in the EU their German passport is good for living/working in any EU country plus a few more European countries. If you're in the US and have an Irish grandparent and think you might like to travel, visit, work, retire in Europe for a few years or for the rest of your life, it's advisable to get an Irish passport through your ancestry.

We just use WhatsApp to communicate with people (all Irish people use WhatsApp instead of their actual phone texting option; i found it a little funny at first)….. or I even just iMessage, since both my mom and I have iPhones we can still just iMessage. And there’s all the messengers through, Instagram and Facebook and Snapchat so it’s quite easy to keep in touch still/ not too weird of a transition

HI Steph, same here moved to this gorgeous, amazing place, so so lucky! You made the correct decision 100%. It's the best base for all of Europe, family centric, polite people, safer (outside of parts of Dublin) and overall loaded with beauty and history, what more could you ask for.. better weather is just 1+ hour south on a cheap flight, that's fun too, also the best free education for the girls, PERIOD! btw, you did not mentioned where you live, a city, suburbs, rural or small town? etc.. that makes a big difference depending on where you came from in the U.S. because it's much more diverse in the cities, as expected. My biggest problem here are the speed of the drivers, on small rural roads and that's about it, really.
