Hi Victor. Thank you for the post and review of 23 legalis model. I was influenced by your post and decided to purchase one of these. After a short research, I discovered that Japanese and European models of 23 legalis differ. Japanese models in size 2000 are 2000S-P (gear ratio of 4.8, capacity 0.6PE - 150m) and 2000S-XH (gear ratio of 6.2, capacity 0.6PE - 150m) and both have screw-in handle. On the other hand 2000 size models for European markets are 2000D (gear ratio of 5.2, capacity 0.8PE - 300m) and 2000S-XH (gear ratio of 6.2, capacity 0.8PE - 300m) but without screw-in handle. The appearance of Japanese and European models is almost identical except root of the handle (screw-in part). I am not sure if the main gear differ. Did you noticed those differences maybe?
I never buy anything from the european market so i don't know for sure. It is very hard alraedy to check both the US and Japanese markets. I think Europe gets the same junk as US. I would buy the reel out of Japan if possible.
Been very busy so I'm trying to catch up on your content but looks like youve been very busy as well Victor. The level of competition between Shimano and Daiwa is just so good, that we consumers are the ones benefiting from it. Thanks again for the content
VERY NICE DESIGN by daiwa in my opinion. New spool design and rotor makes it sexy like a vanford. Looks like the 23 Legalis will be the new budget freshwater/ultralight king. Daiwa is really taking over the market. From heavy saltwater reels to even the legalis, they are investing alot of money into R&D, and it shows.
When RU going to buy the new 23 Exist LT SF 1000S-P or the 2000SS-H-P from digitaka price is $598.18. 23 Exist LT 2500-SS $605.53 the only way I will get this reel if I have got all my casting and spinning reels and rods and this is the only thing is left maybe I don’t yet
i am not getting this reel. I heard from a shop owner that the resistance is "not what i would want it to be" lol. That's his direct quote : ) But also its chrome color. Even this Legalis looks better
Hi victor, I’m struggling with whether to go legalis or I have the option of a stradic FL for a bit more. Did you have test the stradic against the new ultegra?
what kind of struggle is this? These two reels are not alternatives. One is a finesse ultralight reel, the other one is a metal frame saltwater reel. If u do ultralight fishing, go Legalis. If u do Saltwater fishing, go Stradic. If u do Bass fishing, do Sahara. These 3 reels are amazing in what they are designed to do and suck at what they are not designed to do.
@@ifishcatfish thanks victor, it was probably a stupid question! We don’t have bass over here in NZ so the reel would be used for trout spinning (1/8oz jig heads and softbaits and 7g lures). We also have a healthy population of kawahai which also run into the river from the sea so we fishing inlet mouths etc for both species. The other spinning target are red fin perch. Most of these fit into the 2lb to 10lb category and sometime used in salt water conditions. I guess I’m after the best alrounder and it might not exisit
the reel matters very little for casting far. You need 0.12mm line and a rod designed to cast small lures and u will cast them with any reel, even the cheapest ebay reel. As for rods, all high end rods cast far. I have a playlist with rod reviews - watch a few and pick something you like.
Im in need of some new reels. I have been watching back through your old videos and i have a lot of questions for you. 1-In the instance of this video. why do you recommend the Japanese version of this reel over the model thats linked in your Amazon page thats different color thats sold here in the US? 2-Why do you prefer a shorter reel handle for twitching? 3-Why do you like the lower gear ratio on reels? Just for less resistance of the gears for a smoother feel? You should consider for unknowing or new viewers separating reel and rod comparisons. example Domestic rods/reels for ultra light techniques that can be had in the US. And like best models. Then Japanese setups for ultralight fishing. Cause i have been watching through your videos and sometimes i don’t put together right away that the particular reel im looking at is even able to be bought here in the US. I think that would help new guys know right away. Some guys just are not interested in ordering over seas. Not that we don’t want to watch all your video. But a defined separation of the two would be nice. Also i have not see any videos specifically on twitching technique. What exactly is it. What you need in a rod, a reel, line, bait. all in one video would make a nice video i feel. Same with swimming jigs. full video on understanding gear for it and techniques. You can do like part 1,2 ext.. to keep video shorter if you need to. I have been really enjoying your channel and info. I tried your jigs out for the first time yesterday. They are very nice quality. sharp hooks that hold fish but the barb is small enough to hold but not over big that its hard to get hook out. they’re perfect. I think the weights you have for smaller baits are good as well. You did good Victor. Now its time to make swim jig heads to fit the 2” soft swimbaits with approximately length shank to fit models like Berkley swimer you recommend to us.
The blue one sold here in USA is the previous generation. Inferior reel. Heavier rotor. The new model is simply not offered here for some very weird reason. Shorter handle lets u feel the weight of the jig during the retrieve. Long handle gives u more leverage and u wind too easy. I like longer handles for swimbaits and float fishing where the weight is much more, and its not about sensitivity anyway
Low gear ratio reduces the resistance from spinning the rotor and pulling the lure through the water. Makes fishing more enjoyable and gears last longer as they work under less stress. 2" Keithech jig will come out some time next year, but there is other things cooking first
@@ifishcatfish In the other video you did comparing this model Diawa and the Shimano Sahara, was the Shimano Sahara a USA model or was that a Japanese model Sahara? Also what size reel do you like on your ultralight rods? Thank you sir.

Still could down hoping 2024, daiwa will release something sexy for reel size 2500/3000. I my myself love the bg, sadly the new bg sw doesn’t release size 2500/3000😭
Nice review. But I don't see any difference between this and US Exceler 23; surely this is just the Japan version of exceler? I think we may have to wait for airdrive US exceler with hex handle.
23 legalis with hex handle and less chrome is now up on daiwa Australia website, I imagine this is the version they will be introducing to europe and americas.
So I was wondering the same thing re 2023 legalis v 23 excelled. The weight the same and have the same amount of bearings and the spools look identical. I just purchased the 23 exceler 2000d. That was the only difference I could find, in that legalis has 2000 sp or xh and exceler only has 2000d which means I have to put a tone of 6lb braid to fill it.
@@ifishcatfishmine is the same ? Its a 2023 model bought from Spain identical to the reel in the video in every way apart from the handle - its the same gold colour but it pushes through the body of the reel and screws on from the other side ??
As you've mentioned, a close study of the reel confirms the Japanese website description: the majority of the weight reduction has happened in the rotor -thinner sections, connections, etc and the wire bail as you pointed out. My 23 Legalis also has less sideplay in the handle bushings than my 2017 model and I won't have to use your 4lb test line trick to reduce the rotational clearance in the handle assembly. 😃👍
Great unboxing. The enormous chrome butt is atrocious. It reminds me of the gigantic chrome butt on the 2012 Ultegra - retro and not in a good way. The new spool is a lot nicer but looks like a complete ripoff of the Sahara spool. Great to see (and hear) the drag sound improvement though.
Those other companies aren't putting in the time with the engineering and quality control like daiwa and shimano are. Penn has a bunch of garbage reels, okuma is half decent, but in the light tackle scenario nobody else competes.
completely agree. And the simple reason is - they don't have engineers on staff. They don't engineer anything. They tell chinese and korean companies what they try to do something like that for them, but it is different, and the available technology will always be 5-10 years behind what daiwa and shimano do today.
I'm 45 and i've been fishing with spinning reels for 30 years and, god is my wittness, i have never bent a bail. I would much rather keep it as is, as making it stronger would add weight FOR NO REASON.

However u can use the felt from the old legalis on many reels that come with carbon washer. 100 people asked me where can they buy a felt washer..
@@ifishcatfish I know it's not the place but if anyone needs some parts from the Legalis 20 I have a brand new full disassembly.
@@NWGCroler i doubt someone will read that, but u can put it on ebay for parts and tell them if they need only one part to email you..
Do you use eBay to order this from Japan or do you recommend another resourse?
I dont know what to recomment any more. I tell people then they buy a reel and they complain the reel is making noises and its my fault. I no longer recommend stores, sorry.
No problem. I understand. Thanks
where do you order these from ?
go go daiwa japan and pick the exact model you want. Then google.
Vanford or legalis for saltwater purpose?
vanford, of course
Awsome video again victor,I loved the old legalis I’ve 2 of them but they are a little dated I’m excited with this review I’m gona update my old reels for these, you’re recommendations have not let me down yet😉
well... this review is gona be more interesting than i expected. Don't miss it.
@@ifishcatfish 👏👏👍
Hello Victor, is it still worth to buy the older lagalis, the jdm model. Because it is much cheaper,it happens that there is a tackle shop here in the area that is selling the legalis jdm model.
It DEFINITELY is! I think the old one looks better, and has nicer bail, and the bail doesn't click. The new one is a little lighter and a bit more finessy but these are small difference and if u see big difference in price - definitely take advantage
@@ifishcatfish thank you Victor! Still gonna get this model in the future, as you said it will be the king in half of a decade. Legalis are awesome and definitely a gem for a budget segment
Is it possible to exchange the spool with the old Legalis. I heard it is the same size. Thanks
I have not tried but someone told me they tried and didn't work out. I don't know for sure though..
Is the new 23 Fuego the same as this reel?
but sealed. For saltwater. Sometimes the seals bring a little extra resistance. U don't need fuego if fishing freshwater
Thank you, I mostly fish for small saltwater fish.
@@mylesm3853 thats exactly what u want then
will that spoon cast worse than previous?
why would it cast worse?
@@ifishcatfish cause its different
@@abcJ-q4v the only thing that matters for casting, is line lay. And that is the same for all daiwa reels. I would absorb that, as it can help u. THere is no casting difference between Legalis and Exist.
My 23 Legalis 2000S-P came in too. Amazing reel for the money. Exceptionally light and smooth
which one shud ill get high gear one or low gear? im using it for light softplastic fishing
@janmichaelsuarez2996 I'm stuck on that question too. I'm getting it for trout fishing.
Hi what line would you recommend to use for this?
For every budget..thank you
@@elyazinho i recommend nylon monofilament up to 0.15mm diameter. U can buy whichever u want, but be nylon and watch diameter
@@ifishcatfish thank you for your recommendation
Can you get this reel with a shallow spool??
the one i have is not that deep. Its nothing like the old legalis. It takes 150 yards of 0.14 mm, which is about right for this kind of reel, since some people will put much thicker line.
whats you 2023 top pick reel for under 200 dollars? Needs to have a good loud drag sound, i have a trip to north georgia (blue ridge toccoa river)coming up and have an itch to get another UL setup.
Ultegra .. but the drag sound is not very loud. This reel actually has the best stock sound.
is it problem if is HG ratio? supposedly (at least that's what they say about daiwa) if the transmission is higher, you feel resistance when winding the handle@@ifishcatfish
@@ivanvedris9636 well u want to do 6.3 rotor turns with 1 crank of the handle, instead of 4.8. If you want to do more work with one crank, you have to put more force.
Okuma cymer hd vs daiwa legalis lt new model which one better.?
Legalis is the best reel under $150. Okuma = Kastking. Silly to compare with daiwa models
What is the difference between LEGALIS LT 2000S-XH, LEGALIS LT 2000S-P?
gear ratio and depth of spool.
which one is good for light fishing? P or XH?@@ifishcatfish
P or no P doesnt matter, but dont buy reels that have H or X in them
maybe the new legalis run really smooth because it has a lower transmission? for example xh transmission has a slight resistance compared to regular legalis
Victor … u recommend 1000 size for jigging …would that also apply for ned rig?….thank u
I'm not sure. Its similar action and very sensitivity oriented, but weight is always heavier. You can go either way. If u use a long rod or cheaper rod, 2000 size will look better and have more power
While it might be petty, does the bail click when open?
yup. Clicks like all shimanos.
Been very busy so I'm trying to catch up on your content but looks like youve been very busy as well Victor.
The level of competition between Shimano and Daiwa is just so good, that we consumers are the ones benefiting from it.
Thanks again for the content
thanks buddy
Does that bail arm look lower to you? Seems unusually low
it is kind of low, and also super ugly...
Can this ultra light cast micro lures far? What rod would be good for it to cast small lures far?
the reel matters very little for casting far. You need 0.12mm line and a rod designed to cast small lures and u will cast them with any reel, even the cheapest ebay reel. As for rods, all high end rods cast far. I have a playlist with rod reviews - watch a few and pick something you like.
Don't know theyear of my 2500sh but mine has the straight short handle
Sahara or legalis?
Legalis for ultralight fishing. Sahara for bass fishing
“5 square feet of chrome”
This made me laugh so hard. 😂
: )
Heart broken for me. I have Daiwa saltiga 2020 14000, love the drag sound but hate color. I wish I can switch to this color black/gold. Bought another Daiwa saltiga 2023 during Black Friday 6000XH. Hate color again. And the worse part is the drag sound, super silent compared to this. Looking to get 2500/3000 for light inshore saltwater jigging, have this one in my mind. Still could down hoping 2024, daiwa will release something sexy for reel size 2500/3000. I my myself love the bg, sadly the new bg sw doesn’t release size 2500/3000😭
i feel like that for the 2020 Presso..
You know you can adjust the clicker sound by bending the clicker spring out slightly so it pushes harder on the detents
Nice review. But I don't see any difference between this and US Exceler 23; surely this is just the Japan version of exceler? I think we may have to wait for airdrive US exceler with hex handle.
Rather, hex handle US legalis. Daiwa are great at making confusion.
i haven't seen the US exceller, shockingly..
yes, thats their strongest side
23 legalis with hex handle and less chrome is now up on daiwa Australia website, I imagine this is the version they will be introducing to europe and americas.
So I was wondering the same thing re 2023 legalis v 23 excelled. The weight the same and have the same amount of bearings and the spools look identical.
I just purchased the 23 exceler 2000d. That was the only difference I could find, in that legalis has 2000 sp or xh and exceler only has 2000d which means I have to put a tone of 6lb braid to fill it.
Sound crystal clear
how come my handle doesn't look like yours... my is not a 1 piece.. i think i got scam..lol
did u buy a 2023 Legalis? From what country?
everything looks right, but just the handle that is different.. maybe it's because of the model i got??

Unlike you, I prefer the "gold" handle to the gray color handle. Also, as of today the Sahara is over $20 less than the Legalis.
as of today... I wonder why would the price go up right for black friday..
Maybe because the 2023 Legalis is too good to compete with at equal price?
Victor, it will look good on my Daiwa Presso.
a bit too shiny, but the gold accents are kind of red-gold and very close
As you've mentioned, a close study of the reel confirms the Japanese website description: the majority of the weight reduction has happened in the rotor -thinner sections, connections, etc and the wire bail as you pointed out. My 23 Legalis also has less sideplay in the handle bushings than my 2017 model and I won't have to use your 4lb test line trick to reduce the rotational clearance in the handle assembly. 😃👍
That Bail is nasty on the New one!
u know... i wish i could disagree...
I rather have a screw in handle than a 1 piece bail
Ha! If you put it like that - me too! Also, it was never a one piece bail. It was a Fake one piece bail, but it was always many pieces glued together
Hi sir ,which one you choose between Daiwa Legalis LT Vs Shimano 23 Ultegra ?
Please kindly let me know if you have any answer, thank you.
they are on very similar level, buy whichever is cheaper or whichever looks better on your rod

Nice....ur going to love the entire update...even the revros...check it out😊
not the Revros though... unless they put the bearing back
Great unboxing. The enormous chrome butt is atrocious. It reminds me of the gigantic chrome butt on the 2012 Ultegra - retro and not in a good way. The new spool is a lot nicer but looks like a complete ripoff of the Sahara spool. Great to see (and hear) the drag sound improvement though.
yep. People tell me it didn't bother them until i mentioned it and now it does. Like its my fault, instead of the fool that designed it
Hear you load and clear
Those other companies aren't putting in the time with the engineering and quality control like daiwa and shimano are. Penn has a bunch of garbage reels, okuma is half decent, but in the light tackle scenario nobody else competes.
completely agree. And the simple reason is - they don't have engineers on staff. They don't engineer anything. They tell chinese and korean companies what they try to do something like that for them, but it is different, and the available technology will always be 5-10 years behind what daiwa and shimano do today.
bail too thin, bend easily from falls and bumps
sounds like you need a product made of thick steel. This is finesse product - definitely not good for your fishing methods
@@ifishcatfish no matter how finesse u r, you'll drop your pole and bump into rocks tree etc...
I'm 45 and i've been fishing with spinning reels for 30 years and, god is my wittness, i have never bent a bail. I would much rather keep it as is, as making it stronger would add weight FOR NO REASON.
@@ifishcatfish when carrying you pole walking over rocks etc to fishing spot, slip u'll smash whats in you hand to the ground rocks etc... something'll break... weak bail will bend. I like that thicker bail on the old legalis, it's hollow isn't it
@@abcJ-q4v yes, its hollow and more vulnerable. This one you can bend back. The other one will crack and u cannot fix. Either way your concerns are not a problem for ultralight tackle. If you want tackle that can withstand falling on rocks, you need something heavy, made of steel. You are looking at the wrong products. I also have allergy to grass, but i am not looking for fishing tackle that can cure my grass allergy. The purpose of ultralight tackle is different
