I am still in awe of this group. The writing was often very sophisticated lyrically, and musically. Some bands imitated the Beatles. These guys built upon the influence and brought it somewhere new and exciting.
‘80s music videos were an interesting breed, many of the earliest ones were usually videos like this of artists just goofing around on a soundstage with no real concept or plot. No gimmicks or flashy set pieces needed, really. They didn’t have to be like short films or anything like that. Much simpler times.
I have no idea what’s going on in this video but I love it. 41 years and have not never seen this clip before. What a great, great, great song. And Paul Carrack on vocals… Just the absolute best!
I see people not giving a fuck. I could be very wrong. But, I think I understand that the choice of Paul as the lead singer for this song was not one made by the band but the producers. So, what I think I see is some discontent from the other band members. I mean, D&T were the writers and singers for so much of the body of work and then for a producer to decide that Paul was the better voice for this song (not incorrectly, IDK who it was that decided, but they were right) had to sting.
@@xiongfa2152 I thought that watching this video and also the other "official" video for this song. Tilbrook and Difford both look incredibly bored and almost angry in both versions.
I saw this clip on TV years ago, but when I couldn't find it on RUclips, I wondered if I'd imagined this peculiar clip. It's half arsed, but I like it a ton.
The 80s were my best decade...life is too short💙💙 love ...so much love. Dear God forgive my seductions...love and kindness to all❤❤ Marcia in Modesto CA.
I remember when this hit the air around 80-81 and loved it first time I heard it. This is one of the great timeless classics. Thank God the radio didn't slam it in the ground and played it a million times the first week it was out. This was one you caught every once in a while and made you stop and listen. Being Zeppelin, /Sabbath/ Dead Head from birth, to flip genres was grounds for excommunication from my peers. But they knew I had great taste in music and followed suit.
It's about a five-minute walk between the Quaker Bridge Mall in Lawrenceville, NJ, and the New Jersey Division of Motor Vehicles. About halfway between them is a car dealership called Coleman Cadillac. EVERY time I walk past Coleman, in either direction, this song is playing there.
It would be hilarious if the whole song was just a list of things he bought, like the opening line about a toothbrush, toothpaste, flannel, pajamas, hairbrush, shoes and a case. He should have kept going on about a bunch of other stuff he bought.
I've enjoyed this song on the local 'oldies' station, but had never seen the video. Delightfully weird, at least to my American eyes. Loved it, thank you.
This is one of those songs that played the long game. It’s been popular ever since it came out even if it didn’t chart really high. Elvis Costello turned it apparently from a reggae style to this blue-eyed soul style.
Just watched the version with the young ladies. Gotta say, this one is so much better and a hell of a lot funnier. They looked so bored in the other one. Loved the mop heads!
I was born in ‘89 and heard this and other 80’s songs a lot growing up in the 90’s. I had my 80’s phase in the early 00’s when the music was very different. Like catching up on the decade I missed out, made easier by the internet and limewire😅 Kids nowadays are crazy about the nineties.. Man I’m Old! 😂😂
I remembered this song from the "Fruit of the Loom" commercials. Those were good times. The commercial used to be on RUclips. I guess it got taken down by copyright.
That's Paul Carrack doing the main vocals, while Glenn does one verse. Paul Carrack was also the main singer/songwriter for the band "Ace", while also being in Mike and the Mechanics later on in the 80s. He's quite talented on his own.
For some reason I heard this song a lot back in the mid 90's as I was getting into modern music at the time... and thought this song was released around that time. I still thought this to this day until I looked up this song when I heard it over a Grocery store radio randomly... and to my surprise it came from the 1980's... weird.
Wow! That's the second time I ever saw that video! The first time I saw that video was on Video One back in 1984. Paul Carrack really got into the 80s after Ace. He joined Roxy Music, Squeeze, Nick Lowe's Noise To Go and Mike + The Machanics. I like two versions of the music videos of this song. It's tempting!
Chris Difford is a GOD of lyric writing. He can take those intimate, homely details of life and build the most brilliant conceits. I swear, he always makes me feel I'm not worthy. 😄😄
At first Glenn Tilbrook hated the idea of being replaced by Paul on this song, but after hearing Paul sing the song he admitted the producer was right. The song is about trying to get revenge after learning you were cheated on, so to get even he wants to sleep with someone else. Then he realizes he can't cheat on her even though she cheated, because he still loves her.
Unlike most other Squeeze songs which were sung by either Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, it was sung by Paul Carrack (at Elvis Costello’s suggestion).

I bought a toothbrush, some toothpaste
A flannel for my face
Pajamas, a hairbrush
New shoes and a case
I said to my reflection
"Let's get out of this place"
Passed the church and the steeple
The laundry on the hill
Billboards and the buildings
Memories of it still
Keep calling and calling
But forget it all, I know I will
Tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered
What's been going on
Now that you have gone
There's no other
Tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered
I'm at the car park, the airport
The baggage carousel
(The people keep on grindin')
Ain't wishing I was well
I said it's no occasion
(It's no story I could tell)
At my bedside empty pocket
A foot without a sock
Your body gets much closer
I fumble for the clock
Alarmed by the seduction
I wish that it would stop
Tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered
What's been going on
Now that you have gone
There's no other
Tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered
I bought a novel, some perfume
A fortune all for you
But it's not my conscience
That hates to be untrue
I asked of my reflection
Tell me what is there to do?
Tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered
What's been going on
Now that you have gone
There's no other
Tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered
Tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered
Tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered
Tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered🎤🎶
Such brilliant Beatles-y lyrics.
this is some funky English R&B. could be a Motown track. love the story.....
I love seeing the vids and singing along to the lyrics. Thanks.

Awesome song that never gets old. Paul Carrack has such a great voice.
I came here just to see if his voice matched his face and .. nope!
@@fitnova_ He is the anonymous voice behind so many great songs.
How Long by Ace
The Living Years by Mike and the Mechanics are just a couple
He’s my favourite singer
Totally. About as perfect a pop song as there has ever been
And let us not forget, the Great Elvis Costello produced this Gem! ❤😊🎉
Love.
.
Marvelous! Interesting
And sang backing vocals on it....
@@lolls76And a couple of lines in the second verse. (Glenn Tilbrook also shares some vocals in the second verse.)
I always thought the production is a little plodding. A great song that never gets going. A version with a little more urgency would be perfection.
I am still in awe of this group. The writing was often very sophisticated lyrically, and musically. Some bands imitated the Beatles. These guys built upon the influence and brought it somewhere new and exciting.
Well said. I think that description would fit XTC as well. They both took the Beatles influence and updated it and added to it.
Very well said!
They are giants.
Definitely my favorite band of all time.
you're not wrong
If someone asks me why I love Squeeze I shall show them this absolute masterpiece of a video.
It's SHOCKINGLY bad! Fab song, dreadful video.

This song always reminds me of the winter of 97-98. Love this band
You should hear the version they did for the film Reality Bites.
Paul Carrack,,great musician, immensely underrated.
Not by anyone with any developed sense of taste...

This is LIT, stands up over time
That is because it is literally a PERFECT piece of art. It's without flaw.
Thank you for not using the word “epic”, the most overused word in the English dictionary by every day millennial out there. Lit. Good word
This isn't Lit, it's Squeeze. Lit sang "My Own Worst Enemy".

Easily one of my all-time favorite songs. However, I'm so glad I've been watching the stage performance video instead of this one.
The best video version of this song
They penned some great songs. Always enjoy listening to them.
This is the first song that introduced me to their music. Never saw the video until now. Thanks for sharing 😊
Yeah, poor Paul- attacked by mops. What a way to go....
Only peaked as high as No. 49 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Charts in 1981. Great song.
I think this song is one of the best of the best... A true Classic that the world really needed to hear! Thank you Squeeze guys ;)
This cut has a motown and doo wop feeling and vibe, still slamming
This song is so timeless, and I never go very long without hearing it somewhere.
Paul carack has the same wonderful bluesey feel as Paul Rodgers and bonnie Rait, just brilliant.
This song reminds me of when I used to drive around and hang out with my father, listening to music, such great times!
this reminds me of going to weddings in the 80's, a great track.
Of course, the great Paul Carrack on vocals. Voice of many hit songs.
How Long, Don't Shed A Tear, The Living Years, Silent Running, just to name a few.

Carracks voice born for this song.
Paul Carrack, the man with the golden voice!
That's why I love this band.
this song also was soundtrack to the film "Reality Bites" featuring Winona Ryder(🔥🔥)
The organ gives a bluesy, relaxed feel to it-like one of those songs you hear at the bar & you drink vodka & observe.
