I understand why we need to be open in therapy, but that takes trust and that takes time. I was judged by a therpist being open wanting to get help so badly. Wanting someone to trust with some really sensitive stuff about myself. But she couldn't get rid of me fast enough.
What are the issues that you want to work on? - What's important to me? - What's relevant to me and my life? - One issue or several issues? - Write down issues, bring to therapy session What do you want to get out of therapy? - Therapeutic goals - Give structure and focus in therapy sessions - Act as markers to monitor / track progress - Therapists job to help identify achievable / realistic goals Be open and honest - Say how you are feeling, what you are thinking - Talk about behaviours and relationships - Holding back will limit help that can be given - May take two to three sessions to open up - Present 'real self' Be prepared to do some work between sessions - 'Practice makes perfect' - practising new skillsets - E.g. use of mindful audio file to manage intrusive thoughts - Limited by time constraints of sessions Clear some time around your therapy sessions - Arrive early to give yourself time to plan what to talk about - Have time at end of session to reflect - don't go straight to work - Go home or coffee shop to process what was spoken about today - You might be feeling a bit 'raw' from session - Give yourself time for 'a-ha moments' after session - Use dedicated notepad / notebook for therapy
I’m starting tmw! I’m very excited!! I already made a list of 14 things I want to work on for now to start!! 🙏🏻 hopefully it’s gonna work. Thanks for the tips!
This video is so helpful. I’m having my second therapy appointment to get help with my complex PTSD tomorrow and I’ve been extremely anxious about it. Last time during the appointment I couldn’t think clearly on the spot and I feel like I didn’t get as much out of the session as I could have if I would have taken a lot of this advice and really thought about the issues that are a priority for me to work on and write notes about how I felt throughout the week and any issues I have had. This is really lessening my anxiety around my appointment tomorrow. Thank you so much! 🙂
I find this helpful my first therapy appointment in a week or so And I would like to mentally prepare for it. It might take me some time to open up about my mental health though but I hope to get as much out of my therapy jurny as possible
Do you have any tips to get the most from therapy? I'd love to hear from you.

I don't think I've ever had a therapist ask me what I wanted to get out of therapy 😮
That’s not good at all. I’m sorry to hear that. Best wishes, Teresa.
