I use Pocket sized Notebooks for Bujo for years. I keep it very simple. Weekly reflections for example are in a separate notebook. One addition that I find very useful is to put a card in there as bookmark. On this card I got my calendar incl. tracker. On the backside I have my birdseye task list and a reminder from the last reflection. Very subtle and simple, but this was a game changer for me.
What a concept to use a blank paper as a bookmark with your monthly calender on. While I use a sheet with some nice picture printed on, I find this absolutely top and copied it right away. With this you have your monthly calendar wandering through the pages to be always at the right place. Maybe i use it as a weekly calendar, just don't know yet, but what a beautiful idea.
Yep just moved my whole bullet journal from A5 to Pocket Notebook 3 months ago. And using a Lochby pocket journal to hold it together as my EDC. But I like the idea of A6 using double page. Great idea 💡 And as you say easy to take with you anywhere. Thanks for the idea 😊
Turning the notebook 90°, seems like a great solution! And if you wanted to, you could still do side-by-side, spreads by turning the notebook back to landscape orientation for certain pages. It doesn’t have to be consistently portrait or landscape throughout.
Hello Ryder, I love the use of a modular Bullet Journal system. I recently discovered A5 size Travelers Journals. I can have 4 inserts, or in book binding world, signatures. I started making my own. One insert is specifically for my monthly & daily, the next is for long form journaling, the next is blank paper for drawing, the next is my custom collections and one on the pocket that is my Yearly Calendar and trackers. I take out the daily all the time and I fold it in half creating the pocket size to take anywhere! When one insert is filled up, I just make a new one. 😊 Love all the pocket size uses!
I’ve recently began using the standard Bujo and boy has it helped clear my head and make me focus on things I actually want to accomplish. Makes me almost sad that I didn’t begin this sooner in my life. Pretty early on I thought “man, I need a smaller version of this.” And immediately found them at a local store. Picked them up and it’s been a huge help. So glad for these.
I've just started to Bujo and I'm absolutely loving it! Only 5 days in and I can honestly say it's revolutionised my life, my family life and my work life! The original A5 size is the only one I was aware of and invested in that though realising this week that it's a little bit cumbersome for taking to/from work & it's heavy. However, the format & space of the A5 really works for me. I have bought the Pocket size to see if I can dovetail it with my A5 notebook. Is anyone else doing this?
I LOVE the Pocket Notebook as a complimentary journal! An additional feature I appreciate (and a difference I leverage) is with the size--the number of pages (46-A5 pages in portrait, 92 "small" pages in landscape) versus 204 A5 pages. Essentially, the Pocket is 1/4 of a Bullet Journal. That number of pages often works GREAT for me for Collections of various projects and purposes, where other journals would be too long. I enjoy keeping the Collection distinct, unified, and complete. I hate wasting pages. I love filling journals. And I always love the feeling when starting a fresh journal. :-)
I've always kept a little notebook in my purse to capture daily notes. But now I am learning from multiple youtubes how others are using pocket notebooks, which has enhanced my productivity and creativity. Thank you for the idea of a simple turn of the notebook bringing greater space. Genius, and why didn't I think of that! Lol Thank you!
When I was doing data entry at an accounting firm (mostly numbers)... I taught myself to mouse with my left hand so my right hand could stay on the numbers pad. My dad suggested that since I was totally new at left hand mousing to leave the button orientation alone. (Don't customize)... This allows others to use your computer or if you want to right hand mouse there's no adjustments. This skill has come in handy throughout the years and takes care of the traffic jam on the right that you described in the video. 💕🌞🌵😷
I do the same at work because of a repetitive strain injury on my right side. There's a program called EitherMouse that can set multiple mice to whatever customized settings you want, and a person could change them easily if someone else is using the mouse who wants different settings. I actually switch back and forth between a mouse on each side.
@renee3461 , I took my dad's advice and left the mouse settings alone... It's just simpler that way. Just move the mouse to the left or right of the keyboard and go.... But Rider must be using an Apple computer because I don't see any buttons. Even easier to switch hands! 💕🌞🌵😷
I have carpal tunnel syndrome and have used my mouse with my left hand for about 3 decades. I am right handed. This helps my right hand but it also allows me to use my right to take notes or use an adding machine which I use either right or left handed just depends on what I am doing.
@stephiluttrell3416 , I "cured" my carpal tunnel by not tucking my hands under my head whilst falling asleep. The pressure/weight of my head on my hands/wrists (along with my daily tasks) was enough to set those nerves on fire. At first it's difficult to fall asleep without that balled up hand/wrist under my chin, but a rolled up wash cloth under my cheek and my hand flat on the bed under my pillow helped. I tried wearing splints to bed, but after a while, I'd wake up with them laying in the bed... I never remember undoing the 5 straps x 2 (left&right) splint. Once in a great while I still catch myself tucking that hand under, but a quick correction and haven't had a flare. Praying that yours recovers soon and it no longer torments you either. Sending lots of love 💕 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵. Take care of yourself and each other 😷
I’m not ready to ditch my main bujo but I’m loving using the pocket as my sidekick for trips and even extended errands where I would not bring my bujo in the past. It has been game changing and help me be more consistent.
i use the pocket notebook for my daily time blocking and to help me lead dinner devotions in my role as a chaplain. I am able to carry the notebook wherever I go, and take notes as needed. I have found that a simple paperclip can bind pages together so I can easily access my week spread and the day that I am on (the pages between are clipped together). I have also used A5 journals for years in portrait format for note taking, a practice that I began in seminary, when i needed to use less space while taking notes during class. an open bound a5 is a whole lot smaller than an open bound a4. thanks for your work over the years.
Great ideas, Ryder! I’ve been doing something similar for a while now and it’s nice seeing others find a similar niche :). Personally, I like to use my pocket notebooks as a repository for my daily logs. That way, I can take along my daily check list everywhere I go. I’m often forgetful and distractible, so it serves as a little nudge always at a hand’s reach.
I bought the A6 when you released and LOVE taking this size on my morning walks for momentary captures - sightings in nature, ideas etc. I am so forgetful I love having the pocket along!
I recently ran out of space in my 2024 Bujo for the month of December and I had a small field notes notebook laying around so I used it as my pocket in tandem with the Bullet Journal pen. I really like the portability of it. Normally I write things in the Bujo app if I am away from my Bujo but having a little notebook with me at all times removed the need for the app as I will just write things down when an idea popped into my head. I ended buying another big notebook for my 2025 Bujo but I do miss the portability. I really like the idea of using the pocket as a separate collection.
Thanks for this video. I have to admit I was a bit skeptical about the size of this little book but turned it 'portrait' and it was perfect for on the go. I will do as you suggest, the little one for each day and the bigger one for reflecting and working-up things
I am also right handed but switched to use my mouse with the left hand about 10 years ago. While ALL of my colleagues thinks I did that to throw off anyone trying to work with my computer (Why would I do that???) it's actually so I don't occupy my writing hand with movements I can actually do with my left hand while still being able to write notes with my right hand (I had digitalize a lot of handwritten spreadsheets at that time). It took a few weeks to get used to using my mouse with my left but it's really not that challenging. If I have some more intricate work to do on the computer I can always switch to using it with my right hand. Oh, and annoying my colleagues is actually an added bonus 😅
I've used a Rite-in-the-Rain 3"x5" top spiral memo book as as my BUJO since I retired several years ago. I wish I had learnrd about the benefits of pocket sized notebooks years ago. I think you are really on to something here and looking forward to your ideas about this in the future.
Love the idea of tearaway page Thank you notes. I would add a small envelope of gold thank you stickers to add a bit of fun and class to your hand written note.
Thank you so much, Ryder and Team for sharing this. All that you say about the Pocket is true. I love to use it as a companion. One is also dedicated to medical issue and cases of emergency. And thank you very much for sharing the story of your dad. Now I am interested in using the A5 in portrait mode, to fix my problem with missing the B5 format with the advantages of Bullet Journal Notebook. Maybe you would be able to fix that in a different way this year. 😉
using a rhodia webbie A6 for my pocket.. i use it for my rough or “dirty” daily logs, weekly to-do logs, “waiting for…” list, and project log for my music and art projects ..during evening reflection i copy the cleaned-up text to the main bujo. works like a charm!
Same. Field notes as “capture all” and the Bullet Journal as my Main Contendor. It actually helps me more than just having a pocket BUJO, as I don’t feel as attached to the format of the catch-all Field Notes, and will often be filled with quick calculations, ideas, quotes etc that I can than migrate to appropriate notebooks. Even if I’m out, I’ll migrate the tasks to the Field Notes, and visa versa
I think larger notebooks are cooler and look better and just seem nicer, but I’ve been BuJoing in a pocket notebook for years now because they’re always on me and I’ve found that it’s actually super easy to write a ton in them even for meeting notes or journal entries. Great video as always!
I am a full digital productivity guy but I use small notebook whenever I leave my phone behind. Without a device to write something to my (GTD) inbox, I need something else to capture thoughts and ideas. A small notebook with removable pages is perfect because once I‘m back at the computer or phone, I transfer the things from the notebook. I love this because it helps me to spend more time without devices but without the fear of forgetting ideas.
Wow, what great ideas for using a pocket notebook. It's something I never thought of as part of my BuJo practice, even though I use a pocket notebook in my health care job. After many years of different styles of Bullet Journals, I have settled on an A5 loose-leaf binder. This has encouraged me to incorporate art journalling the individual pages in my system. But the binder is sometimes unwieldy to carry around, and then I'm struggling to add notes to my phone. Expanding on a notebook system I already use feels very promising.
I use a pocket notebook to keep a record of deliverables for clients like a timeline and todo’s in the one list it’s got times in the margins and each page is one client. I use erasable friction pens as well. I can use different colours for specific things as well. The best thing is I can keep it in my pocket and take it out whenever I need to. During my breaks I can sit down and quickly tick off or amend anything then put into Trello. I also use index/flash cards folded in half for specific things they fit into the middle of the notebook 📓 flags or tabs for the day and dates meetings with case managers can be put in a separate notebook.
welcome to the horizontal fold. that's how i grew up using composition books with graph paper in them. i hated the lump at the spine because my hand would run into it, so i rotated it. i'd already been taught to rotate printer paper and split it into 3 columns for notetaking, so it was a pretty natural switch. i'll have to give the bujo pockets a try. i'm always out to find a new pocket notebook that works better than my self-made ones. self-made is nice, but time consuming.
Thinks again for this wonderful insights. I'm still the king of procrastination... but I do much more today, and I KNOW IT. I got off inertia, and got, SLOWLY, momentum... at some point, my HABITS will get established, and the results I seek will present themselves.
So I’m toying with the idea of using a smaller journal for the portability reasons you mention… but I do love the A5 size. I’ve been mulling over this idea (to have my cake & eat it too)… What if I keep my monthly log, future log, and collections in my A5 and use the pocket for my daily log? Part of my daily / weekly practice would be to add migrating from my pocket notebook to the larger & vice versa in some cases? Any thoughts?
As a teacher, I use the pocket version to organize my administrative tasks at school; so basically as a separate collection. This way it's all in one place and I don't have to flip through my A5 every day journal 😊
Speaking of solutions for the "keyboard-mouse-notebook-pen-mosh-pit". Personally, I have solved this by using a split keyboard. This allows me to put the notebook and pen dead center in front of me. What is as split keyboard you might ask? Basically, it is a keyboard that is split in two halves. This allows them to put them further apart. This makes space in the middle for putting something to write. But the actual reason they came into existence, is that they allow them to place the wrists straight and the hands further out. The wider positioning of the hands, opens up the chest and eliminate the hunchback position you usually have to force yourself in in front of a regular keyboard.
It’s absolut inspiring to use a pocket BuJo for every month. So you have a full overview in 12 pieces after a year. The bigger BuJo ist perfect for collections, projects and yearly planning (I guess a bigger BuJo would stay for a year for me, without the dailies, that a now in my monthly pockets).
I have a question, if we are using pocket notebook as a secondary notebook for EDC, should we migrate our entries to main notebook at the end of the day? how would it work?
Hello. I just stsrted bujo recently and i really enjoy it and it helps me alot being creative and organized. And about pocket sized one... i already had alot of experience with pocket sized sketchbooks because of being comicbook artist (gotta creep on strangers with my pen and papers!) So i knew the strength of pocket sized note taking. And for the future consideration i hope you and leuchtturm make A6 size soft(i perfer hard one but hey)cover bujo with much more pages than current one.(because already Canson and Hanemule are making veeeery similar sized a6 pocket sketch book like current pocket bujo with 120gsm papers) sorry for my not that good english but thanks for reading!
I use smaller notebooks especially the ones that have an easy tear pages. I use these for a quick note or idea or reminder. And if those notes are still important I tear that page and put it in the pocket of my regular size notebook. Why don’t I write those notes in my regular notebook? So I dont have to search for it
When you flipped the A6 notebook so it became an A5 page, I had a duh moment. I mean, I've repeatedly used an A4 spiral notebook horizontally, essentially sizing it down so it looks like an A5 2-page spread, but I'd never thought to do the opposite and size up a smaller notebook 🤦♀
Will these be available on amazon? For Canadians ordering off US sites is double the price given our dollar and duties and taxes we pay on top of everything.
I repurposed an old leather wallet (in long style) and clipped a small retractable pen, and slid the back cover of my pocket book into in of the receipt slots. Also I throw in some index cards in the sides so it's all protected. Then it all fits in my pocket
I'm wondering if anyone in the community uses the Pocket strictly for rapid logging and the standard a5 for everything else? I've noticed in my own practice that what's being written down broadly fits into three buckets: past, present, and future. Different elements of bujo cater to different phases of this but where portability really matters is workloads in real time (not reflection or planning). Thoughts?
Having two notebooks doesn't feel like a good idea, but I get the idea of having a smaller one, but then I have a feeling having so many small books doesn't feel handy. I like the idea of having one book of truth, this doesn't help with that. Very difficult for me to get my head around it. Anyway, thanks for BUJO, it helped it a great way.
From BuJo I have only pocket notebook now, but I am used to go out with a7, I use it for daily work notes only. This what I call „small“, and it would not compete for the space near my mouth and a keyboard.
Since ladies' clothes rarely have pockets, I use a very light weight, small crossbody bag (the strap across doesn't off my shoulder when I'm working). I guess a fanny pack would work but I sit and stand a lot and I have the crossbody strap adjusted so it doesn't impede sitting or need adjusting. Inside, I keep about 30 days worth of pages, a pen, correction fluid, and a hankie. You could keep your phone and lip balm too, but I'm trying to keep the bag light weight so it's not heavy at the end of the day. I wear it through most activities: housework, gardening, exercise and my desk work. I love that it's within reach as I can jot down items for shopping or just reminders like: that branch has needed triming as it pokes me the last 6 times I've been here. Find the scissors. These notes can be migrated later when I'm back at my desk. 💕🌞🌵😷
Why are you leaving so many random comments and signing off with stupid emojis? You look like you're astroturfing but forgot to change accounts between comments
@StylishHobo first, I have a lot to say, after all he did ask what we do. Next, the more interactions (like comments and thumbs up or down or even rude replys) he gets the better YT likes him and he'll get more views, so I break my comments up. As for the emojis they are shorthand for... Sending lots of love 💕 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵. Take care of yourself and each other 😷. You have yourself a Happy New Year!
I hope bujo refill my 6 ring A5 notebook like filofax

Make the paper thinner or softer. Add more numbered pages and create dividers, e.g. Myself: Physical, Mental, Material, Professional and Social or "The Year in 12 Weeks". Make it more affordable or you won't be able to compete with the small Moleskine notebooks. Good luck and thank you so much for everything.
If you allow me, I would like to give you a piece of advice. In the scene of reading/taking coffee, it simply seems you are missing the point there Make a little pause on reading, SAVOR your coffee as you should, then go back to reading REAL ATTENTION to the moment, EACH MOMENT, is important to SAVOR these moments. This also sinks the possibility of drop coffee on yourself. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love that the Pocket comes in the little box. This little box looks like it would be great for archiving the notebooks. Maybe offer sets of 6. I think the 6-pack archivable box would be a more practical size on a shelf, but I suppose I could hot glue two together. The other thing that I didn't see on the box was a place to notate the nox contents. I worry that the cut out corners of the box will not protect my notebooks in shipping and long term storage. 💕🌞🌵😷
I worry about putting your notebook in my pocket during workouts. Consider making the cover water proof so that perspiration won't make the pages soggy. 💕🌞🌵😷
If A5 is your most popular size then the pocket should be half that... That way I can still use my printables without fussing if I need to paste one in. I know that it's important that the notebook still fit in the pockets of clothes, but since ladies' clothes rarely have pockets I can't give my opinion. 💕🌞🌵😷
I love pocket bujo for traveling, especially when I'm gone for a month. I use it mostly as a memory keeper with high-level trip planning info. I love the size/portability, and even more, it opens to the full A5 page. However, for day-to-day use pocket was too thin. I easily write around 50-60 pages a month. I can't have a sidekick notebook because then my brain is angry for having info in 2 places and I just successfully forget that the second notebook exists. I also prefer to keep 3-4 months of info in one book due to ongoing projects that span longer periods. So far I found out that B6 notebook with thinner paper but 200 pages is the best option. But I do like the official bujo notebook. So maybe well designed B6 sized notebook could be next? 👼

A small notebook with removable pages is perfect because once I‘m back at the computer or phone, I transfer the things from the notebook.
I love this because it helps me to spend more time without devices but without the fear of forgetting ideas.
Your dad is smart too. Sweet that you have a good relationship with him.
I love the idea of dedicated collection & master index, should be very helpful!
I finally know what to use my Field Notes notebook for. :)
welcome to the horizontal fold. that's how i grew up using composition books with graph paper in them. i hated the lump at the spine because my hand would run into it, so i rotated it. i'd already been taught to rotate printer paper and split it into 3 columns for notetaking, so it was a pretty natural switch. i'll have to give the bujo pockets a try. i'm always out to find a new pocket notebook that works better than my self-made ones. self-made is nice, but time consuming.
thank you Ryder
Ryder the idea is just amazing!!! But as a reformed serial notebook hoarder, I’ll stick to the BuJo.
Gracias por este nuevo video en español. Es lo máximo. Se disfruta más que en inglés. Saludos desde Cuba
Thinks again for this wonderful insights.
I'm still the king of procrastination... but I do much more today, and I KNOW IT.
I got off inertia, and got, SLOWLY, momentum... at some point, my HABITS will get established, and the results I seek will present themselves.
"an index to bind them all, if you will" not Ryder Carroll creating the One Notebook
😂😂 No you didn’t. 😅😊 ‘pen’ intended.
So I’m toying with the idea of using a smaller journal for the portability reasons you mention… but I do love the A5 size. I’ve been mulling over this idea (to have my cake & eat it too)…
What if I keep my monthly log, future log, and collections in my A5 and use the pocket for my daily log? Part of my daily / weekly practice would be to add migrating from my pocket notebook to the larger & vice versa in some cases?
Any thoughts?
There are definitely people in the Bujo community who do this! As long as the process is simple in your own mind, that would work
As a teacher, I use the pocket version to organize my administrative tasks at school; so basically as a separate collection.
Loving the pocket notebook so far. Use it for work 😊
I use the traveller notebook passport version for the 2 pocket notebooks.
Imagine if a pocket version came with new official bujos
@@MarieWalker14 , especially the first year... It would get everyone hooked into buying it in following years. 💕🌞🌵😷
I carry a pocket notebook when my A5 is not convenient, but i still need to work on using it 😅
Been using small notebooks like this forever 15+ years it makes a huge difference rotating sideways
Can we talk about a pen? Which pen would you recommend to go with this compact book? Thank you 🙏
Hi, do you rewrite the information to your main Bujo?
I did but if I wanted to put something in the main, it’d get the + (expand on) bullet.
I have a question, if we are using pocket notebook as a secondary notebook for EDC, should we migrate our entries to main notebook at the end of the day? how would it work?
What brand of glasses do you have?
So I dont have to search for it
As someone who cannot do dots (weird brain leave me alone 😂), I wish a grid version was available (yes I am aware I can use another notebook)
I bought some! How do I set them up as my main journal?
Indexing is smart. I can’t find info in my planners. Ugh!
I'm going to use mine for master checklists, to make sure I don't miss anything!
Thoughts?
I was thinking along these lines too.
Q. I checked the shop are all your stickers inserts in English ? For example the days etc thanks
Gracias por el doblaje automático!
GOOD IDE THANK YOU !
I started making journals of this size as an EDC ... mostly for lists, and so I can doodle when I shouldn't be on my phone.
Ryder, you look good in glasses.
I have a lot of multi-year projects so a master index could be useful.
Genius
I used to take it with me. They I left it in a Uber one day. That was it for me.
I imagine the pocket notebooks would fit nicely inside a passport size travellers notebook?
I would say The Pocket is a little bit bigger than passport dimensions.
I came here for tips and got an advertisement. First and last time here.
"The Notebook" doesn't seem like it would stay open very nicely for writing in landscape orientation. Otherwise, I like the idea.
In the scene of reading/taking coffee, it simply seems you are missing the point there
Make a little pause on reading, SAVOR your coffee as you should, then go back to reading
REAL ATTENTION to the moment, EACH MOMENT, is important to SAVOR these moments.
This also sinks the possibility of drop coffee on yourself. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
He used it horizontally not vertically.
The pocket Bujo is just that! It’s an A5 size folded in half. If you use it in portrait orientation it’s an A5 spread
@@theSommerrose14 , then it's the perfect size! Add a water proof cover and never worry about hikes on a hot summer's day!
"I can't have a sidekick notebook because then my brain is angry for having info in 2 places and I just successfully forget that the second notebook exists." This is so real. 😄
