@@RasLunacy I'm in the UK too, but I work nights and get up at 4.45pm, just in time for the 5pm publishing of an RP video to watch while i take my 'morning' shit.
Honestly training the RP way (great technique, slow eccentrics w submaximal loads, 5-30 reps) has brought me most of my gains, but if I didn’t take time every few weeks to horsecock a weight for a PR I wouldn’t love this as much.
He posted this at midnight as a scientific study to see if we’re sleeping enough to support our gains and we all failed, and now we’re all on a chart. Played 4D chess on us all.
I look forward to going to the gym every night. And I’m uncomfortable, sweaty, and fatigued afterwards but I LOVE IT. It is the only time that my mind is entirely clear. I may look and feel like I’m beat down, but inside I’m smiling.
i think its always possible to be more optimal than before, but at some point you have to account for ability to stay consistent. like i train at rpe 9-10, and have to do fewer sets to maintain my fatigue. i could bring the rpe down to like 8 or so, and increase my volume, or institute more of a phase-like structure to my programming, but the going as hard as possible each time makes me love working out. plus if i wasnt trying for a pr every time i went to the gym, id quickly lose my consistency. so theres obviously a trade off. and sometimes the trade off doesnt make sense to anyone other than the person making it.
i am a new viewer to this site. just 2 weeks in. i went from 145lbs to 275lbs in just two weeks. i love my results. i went from doing the bar to being that 4 plate guy in the gym.
I enjoy going to the gym. I also enjoy getting results, whether that means being able to lift heavier, run further, or look a little better. It's fun to progress and see results. I'd even say it's fun to work (reasonably) hard.
I'm somewhere in between fun and optimal. I'm almost 59, and not looking to compete in either powerlifting (something I dabbled in for a few years) and bodybuilding. I started lifting when I was 45. I'm in the best shape of my life and I'm looking to hold on to what I have built since I started. I learn a lot from your videos, but I know that they're geared toward the optimal results.
It’s exactly why I started implementing strongman exercises into my routine. A fun change of the day to day and I enjoy the lifts. More fun means more consistency.
I love this video Dr. Mike! My results actually started getting much better in the gym when I actually started to ENJOY being there! If you enjoy your workouts, I find that you are much more willing to push yourself because it doesn't feel like a chore
He wasn't addressing you though, he was talking to Betty Booty Spanx who does 10 reps of the smith machine squats with 5s and then spends 35 minutes taking weird angle selfies, then gets mad when I am looking at myself in the mirror that you are in the path of to check form, but you think I'm trying to Clark Kent through your 3 sizes to small leggings that look like the squeeze so tight they limit mobility, girl I ain't looking at you, if you actually feel like you went to the gym and don't feel like you can go again for a week you're doing something right, fun is fun, but you feel results
Ever since I started watching Dr. Mike's videos, I started dreading upper body days as much as lower body days. Turned out, I wasn't pushing myself as hard as I could've. But I went through something like a 2nd beginner phase because of it.
Thats great to hear although leg day is still a entirely different beast in my mind. Mainly because of squats, yesterday i almost fainted on my way out of the gym.
Im so glad i found this channel it makes the gym fun😂😂 its funny that i started working out again bc of lower back pain and cleans fixed that shit right up😭
I have genuinely learned to love, truly and unequivocally, the process, the methodology, and the pain and suffering of making real, meaningful progress in the gym. That transformation has made the process remarkably easy to adhere to along the way
I think this is a very good take on exercise and gym in general. You have your goals, whatever they are, and the pursuit of reaching them is a huge part of the fun. The most effective exercises are the ones we enjoy the most, so we do them like they matter. I couldn't imagine ever having a plan that doesn't involve pull/chinups. It's one of my favorite exercises ever and has easily given me the most gains over the years even though I'm not good at them at all. It's just too much fun. Similarly, if there's ever a chance to do box jumps, I'm doing them. New gym and you find the boxes after three sets of squats? Guess it's a box jump day then. If that costs me some gains in the long run, it's worth it just for the fun. Which is what I'm there for after all.
I look at it like the question of "what is the optimal diet?" The optimal diet isn't the healthiest diet that a professional dietician can map out for you with an eye to perfect macro and micronutrient content. The optimal diet is the healthiest diet you'll actually stick to.
Dr Mike!!! After years long break from working out due to injuries and personal hardships and i have to say that this channel has been an excellent tool to help me get back into great shape and good health All of your terrible jokes aside, of course, 😂

As a newbie (I've been lifting for like 3-4 months) I find the process of optimizing my training fun in and of itself and for me part of that is not pushing myself too too hard bc burning yourself out isn't optimal

Jeff Nippard had a video about minimalist training in which, based on meta-analysis, he showed that, using 10+ sets per week to get 100% of possible gains as a baseline, that comparatively and on average, as little as a single set to failure per week (low end of a 1-4 sets per week range) could get as much as 64% of those gains possible, and by pushing that to 5-9 sets per week, that moves up to 84% of baseline maximum gains for the week. So another 20% for double+ the effort, but really close to maximum gains possible for the week. Pushing it to 10+ sets per week finished they gap between that 84% and 100%, but requiring another almost doubling of the sets per week. So something like 6 sets per week per muscle group across 2 sessions (or 2 sets to failure, a regular and a drop set) can put a person in the 75-80% of maximum gains range, whereas it has to jump to double or more that amount of work to get that last 20-25% possible gains. For many squeezing out those last % of gains, for that much more work, is so wildly inefficient for the return on investment, as to be not worth it.
I care about area under the curve. I want results, and those mainly really on me actually showing up. That won't happen unless there's a little fun involved. It helps to learn to love the right stuff
