- It's a huge 20ft x 12ft CHICKEN COOP -- here's how we built it to spoil our chickens!
This year we decided to go BIG with our backyard chickens by building them a huge walk-in chicken coop. We have nesting boxes, a roosting tree, gorgeous plants, an egg basket hanger, and an automatic chicken door. We've been raising chickens for about 10 years, and have always had small coops, but this year we searched around for the best chicken coop ideas and came up with this DIY homemade design. We built it from scratch without a plan, and we love how it turned out. Join us in this video as we complete our chicken coop project and give you a chicken coop tour!
Hi there! 👋🏻 We live on a 1-acre farm right in the middle of the busy city of Phoenix, Arizona! Our names are Kevin & DaNelle, and we moved here in 2009, when our kids Ethan & Lydia were just 6 & 4 years old 🥰 Over the years we've raised goats for milk, chickens for eggs, built a fish/swim pond, planted fruit & nut trees, and grew a large garden full of veggies. We've also raised a bunch of other animals like pigs, sheep, turkeys, geese, peacocks, and more!
Now that our kids are away at college, we have settled into doing what we love most -- which is raising & breeding goats ethically to improve genetics. But don't worry, we'll forever love our goofy pet goats like Luna the herd queen & Willow the stump lover. We also still love raising chickens for eggs, gardening, tending to the fruit & nut trees, and growing fish in the pond. We use the fresh goat's milk to make cheese, butter, yogurt -- and we use that + everything else we harvest on our little farm to make delicious meals. Having a getaway from the busy world right in our backyard brings so much joy to us each day, and we hope it brings some to you, too. 🥰

You people know NOTHING about the needs of chickens..WHYYYY would I watch your video on raising goats??!!!
Such a gorgeous book - each shed is unique and inspiring, and I love all the tiny details Kotite features to help readers imagine how to create their own She Sheds ruclips.net/user/postUgkxe9yi0sulKgsp0VJJCIrLWWkvVqcU7LFR . The feature on Dinah's Rustic Retreat is like something from a fairy tale. It's really inspiring to see how creative all these ordinary people are in making beautiful and useful spaces on a modest scale.
Awesome chicken coop set-up! Now take a picture cause that'll never look thet good ever again!!! :)
Lol, right!
YESSS I've been waiting for this YESSS
Katy_38 P that is what I said when I saw it
This was designed more for human aesthetics than the practical needs of chickens.
I thought the same. It's a chicken coup .
Although a beautiful structure, I cringed at a lot of things that are not recommended for chickens. I wondered how much research was done. Those wood chips are not absorbent and can damage chickens’ feet and lead to infections. 🙁
I thought the same too. I kept waiting to see the coop and then I realized it’s just a run. They tried though. And they seem like nice people.
as soon as i saw them lay those beautiful flowers down i was like. "huh.....okay.....?". don't see the point in all that when it's just a place for them to sleep
It is still their back yard I don’t think they want it to be ugly
love the coop only thing missing is water.
tiggercares maybe they’ll add it later?
@tiggercares omg yes, that was all I could think of throughout this whole video - where’s the water?
My thoughts too 🤷
Oh good, I’m not the only one! I’m honestly confused as to where the heck the water is!! 🤔🤷🏻♀️
I think the chickens waterer is outside of the coop, near the goat feeder.
I already see problems with raccoons, snakes, and rats having easy entry. It's pretty, but not very functional.
That is the most beautiful coop I've ever seen! It needs to be in a magazine!
Cathy Steenson I agree fancy coop where no chicks are to poop lol 😂
I agree
It looks so good
@Heather S Did you come to the comment section only to be a "negative nelly"? This is your 2nd comment about it. Am quite sure they know the chickens will poop & make a mess. 😁
It sure is! Love it and so will the chickens
Love the coop but where’s their water? They need a water fountain haha
Need to stop everything when Weed 'em and Reap uploads ❤️❤️
Yep
I did the same!!!
Rav Dc hell yah
Rav Dc same
Omg same
So they don't even have a coop? They just sleep outside in the run? That's not predator-proof or protected from the elements whatsoever...
love the new coop, I'm surprised there isn't some kind of water feature!
i was wanting to see something like that too.
Some type of water fountain would be most appropriate for these sophisticated ladies.🥰
What kind of protection will there be for the hens ? Incase, of high winds , hail, rain, predators ? Your coop is cute however, it should have more protection from the ground to the roof. Your nesting boxes should never be left on ground. Safety reasons for your hens.
So funny.. “didn’t you know this is a no poop coop”? Lol 😂
Christina Scott, oh, so that is the scoop. We need to be kept in the loop 🤣😂😂🤣🤣
😂😂😂😂
Be cool to see an update on how this build has held up and how it looks with the roof on. Also how the low nesting boxes worked - most people put them high to avoid rats and similar, so how did that go?
"Well, we discovered where to hang this -" "After only arguing a little bit." "Discussing, discussing . . . "
6:49
Oh wait wait, guys let's see if she goes In the nesting box!
"I don't think she know what they are... yet."
Oh she knows, I told, I told her all about it!
"Okay."
You just made my day!😂😄😊
Doesn't the feeder need to be where the roof is over it so that the feed does not get wet when it rains?
you literally just interior decorated and didn't do anything for the chicken....
@@judyjudyjudy9593 They hung one perch and called it a swing. And moved in stuff that was already made.
Just saying if you’re going to hate please don’t comment . If you don’t have something nice to say don’t say it at all
Cats & Friends yep totally agree .i love it I love the whole set up .dont know why people have to be negative about something that’s so cool .when at the end of the day they are only chooks lol . To Henry at least they must love there chooks .at least they look after them .and what chickens ? I don’t see any chickens 🙄 only chooks .sp obviously your not to bright .so maybe go watch something that will make you laugh . Obviously you need a laugh 🙄.and take a chill pill whilst your at it .
Don't they need a water dispenser too? I didn't see one is why I asked ...
As someone who doesn’t know much about building, coopodoit was a lifesaver.
I think the dislikes are people that have their screen upside down when their trying to tap the like button
Jill Bartlett or, they could be vegans. Lol
JaxZion Justice Deak 😆
Jill Bartlett ikr
LOL XDDDDD
Maybe jealous; their coops aren't as homey.
Beautiful coop! Those birds are going to have a field day tearing those flowers up! LOL!
The nicest chicken coop I've ever seen 🐔
My old coop in Houston had a sign that read “Starclucks.” I had blue-egg laying hens.
Nice 👍🏻👍🌹❤️
Love it 😍
Did Eggbert get rehomed?? I didn't see him at all during this video. the chicken coop looks really good, maybe you could add more roosting areas though so they aren't on top of eachother too much!
Can't wait for your next video, love from englandd
Yep, eggbert got a new home because they didn't want a rooster cuz its noisy
Oh
He did, sorry! We mentioned it but didn’t show it. He was too loud for our neighbors.
@@Weedemandreap I can definitely believe you! 😂 Love your videos so much.
@@jellyace7864 how did I miss that...
Ok, now my chickens are getting a swing for Christmas.
Jennifer Duncan sane here
Can you do more updates on this
I’m hipped
Bless you for trying but it’s obvious you know nothing about chickens.
if it rains. maybe you guys should make sure. The food don’t get food wet.should have something over the food
In Australia we call that a chicken run. The chicken run goes next to the chicken coop. The chicken coop is an actual chicken house.
yes, we agree here in FLORIDA it's a pen or a run....I guess once the roof goes on the back half it will be an open shelter
i quit the vid i was watching to watch this, love u Weed'em and Reap. ur definitely my fav youtubers
No clue what your doing. Should have asked someone who has chickens
Haters never get heard👌💯✌
They are chickens...its not rocket science, nothing wrong with how they did it even though it may not be up to your standards.
Wood chips like that are TERRIBLE for chickens. It’s not at matter of “standards” it’s a matter of knowing how to raise the birds. They obviously have the money to do it properly, just didn’t. This is a dangerous coop for them. As pretty as it is to humans, it is AWFUL for chickens.
Seth Edwards amen.
That’s rude there coop is better than mine!
Finally your chickens aren’t homeless! 😂 it’s actually amazing and I love the look of it!
I guess I missed where you put the water container, otherwise the new coop looks really nice - AZ style. When is Hermione due - I must have spaced that.?
Who thinks they should get silkies?!
LunaMoona 0129 they would have to build another coop. Silkies can’t be in with regular hens
SimplyPerfect ! Why? I have one silkie with mine but they are 4 months
@@simplyperfect7794 actually yeah they can. I don't have mine together for breeding reasons and cause my chickens never free range, but their chickens are only up at night, so during the day they can spread out and be away from each other
A lot of silkies and regular chickens live together though
LunaMoona 0129 how come your chickens don’t free range, is it because of predators?
Silkies in north america are the small bantams that are easily picked on by bigger breeds; get ayam cemani instead, they are readily available in the southwest, they are bigger and have more fibromelenosis.
The nesting boxes should be up off the ground away from critters getting in.
Yes and some of my chickens like nesting higher
Omg the chicken coop is literally so beautiful! Good job to all of you! Oh my gosh I hope you do something like this for the goats in the future ahhh! I love the paint and the antique feel in the coop 🐔 🐓
Coop looking good, Kevin too! ;) Bright white roosting boxes is a nice contrast on the dark backdrop, and matches the little shelving unit too.Totally worth the wait to see it done in all the details!
It looks like the nicest chicken coop i have literally EVER seen
Like 👍🏻👍👍
1. chickens have no shelter 2. no real perches 3. the bedding is not absorbent 4. would not be surprised if predators have not already gotten in an killed all the chickens.
Yass, I came as soon as my notification came!
they hanging the chickens on the tree-like they are hanging Xmas tree decorations! lmao hahaha
I love everything about it, the old door and window etc,the flowes etc
Really pretty coop :)
Wondering a bit why you haven't closed the gaps by the windows, they can just walk right through there?
Generally makes me wonder why you made the coop at all, if there is no roof/netting across the top, and it has big gaps like that, then there's no protection against predators, other animals, or weather.
The feeder would benefit from being hung beside the swing where all the chickens can get to all sides of it, instead of having half of it unreachable against the side of the coop, and of course the water will need the same consideration.
You already have animals running around, so in theory you could just make really pretty nesting boxes and attach to the side of the fencing you already have instead of this huge project.
Love you vids and looking forward to the next one :)
Most of those plants are succulents animals don’t eat certain ones cause some are poisonous (I grow them)
I have tons of succulents in North, NORTH Scottsdale, where we still have dirt roads and horses. The rabbits, rats, and mice eat them down to bits. I would do mexican fence post with some artichoke agave, maybe tiny golden barrels. They don’t have the javelina in their yard so that’s good.
Whiskey and Cigarettes ik I meant to say some are poisonous not all
@@whiskeyandcigarettes6011 javelin..as in wild boar?
@@silasmonk2458 Technically peccaries, but yes.
What? Those are not succulents.
Everyone gangster till Weed'em and Reap uploads 😁😁😁
OMG YASSS IM SO EXCITED
Same!
Its so nice to have a backyard that large. Your coop is bigger than my backyard.
These chickens have a more stylish home than I do
penguin 3.0 yes, their house is nicer than mine
Love it ! It looks so Good I would probably want to use it as outdoor space for myself and family . Lol Awesome job guys!
Spoiler:
They'll eat the cactus too.
Love it specially the swing so cute good job showing love from Pittsburgh PA
You should paint "weed em and reap" on the roof of the nesting boxes
Yayy!
YESSS!!!!!💖
@@nancymontgomery8897 😃😄😜🤗😊
I was thinking that Too, Great Idea.
You guys should get a little farm dog to help around 😂💙
What about water? Kevin needs to make the wind mill into a fountain!
Your coop looks beautiful your so creative!!!!
I’m obsessed with it!! It’s so antique and modern at the same time but!! It’s adorable!! U guys never let us down!! 😂❤️
It’s really cute, but poorly designed and not actually for its intended purpose. Nothing in there is actually good for chickens. Have you seen what wood chips do to their poor feet?! This “coop” is for aesthetics only. Never put a chicken in something like this!
So smart of u “ not really” I have chickens I would know and they let them out
@@leahcampos7605 I’m sorry? I don’t quite understand your comment. Perhaps some punctuation would aid you in making your point.
The coop is beautiful, but I didn't see a water source.
Where do they get water😭 and also they coop is amazing
I clicked as fast as I could
I love u guys ❤️❤️
6:16 best stabilizer ever made: chicken head
The aesthetic is amazing, I want to live there
Linnea Burkman me too; but, I'll wait until it gets air conditioning 😁😂😂🤣🤣
Never had chickens before have you.
I picture she would put a tiny diy waterfall in a cute little water trough for the chickens to have water
Is your nesting tree a real tree or did you make it?
Yayyyyyyy
Love it!! Great job, fam!
IM SOOOO EXCITED FOR WILLOW BABYS EEEE THERE GOING TO BE SOO CUTE LIKE HER PLS BE PREGO WILLOW PLSSS LOVE YOU GUYS
Beautiful set up, I love it! Your chickens will tear up the plants even if they don't eat them to make room to bathe if you don't add an area for them to dust bath. And if they do end up destroying the plants either way, please don't put cacti in the coop. If something startles the chickens they will jump and flutter around wildly, possibly hitting a cactus. Plus cacti in the coop will add a lot of risk for bumble foot.
Finally the chicken coop yay!!
Oh, for Pete's sake... Oh, and bless his heart.
I'm so excited to finally see the finished coop!! I love you guys so much!!
This is the sweetest chicken coop I've ever seen! So inspired to beautify my coop in the spring. Here in northern ID it's the winter when you can't work outside XD
Its so nice and it look amazing and also i live ur vids❤️🐣
Chickens need to nest up high and the box should have access from outside to get your eggs. Make it so you don’t have to enter the coop so much like feed from outside and get your eggs from the outside. That flower bed will be destroyed before the flowers and plants grow. Chickens will dig those out. Nice looking coop though.
As soon as I saw the notification I rushed to watch it 🥰
Omg I wish you could decorate my house😂 yall are so good at decor
Edit: Also I dont know if vines would grow in Arizona but you should put some up the sides if they do.
I am so proud of y’all for getting that done and by the way it looks fanomanal!
Lol it’s phenomenal
Love it . Those of you asking about the water they have water outside of the coop by the milking station where the goats eat it can be seen in other videos . They have access to water all day as they are out roaming and go back in at night
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS IM SO EXITED I LOVE WEED "EM AND REAP
Just curious....why didn't you enclose the roof with wire? Eagles & hawks will still get into the pen from above & could target your chickens. Also, would advise to cover the food b/c it will spoil if it gets wet at all. Very pretty chicken pen but of course, I worry about the predator birds attacking your chickens.
I LOVE YOU GUYS SO MUCH!
You know Cedar is bad for chickens right? :) Very aesthetically pleasing either way
It looks lovely! Good job guys.
love your coop... I need to reinforce mine.. I lost a chicken to a possum the other day. :(
I always cheer up when I see a new update from my RUclips family 💙
THE DESIGN OF THE LAYING BOX IS IMPRACTICAL. YOU NEED TO WALK ON CHICKEN POOP TO FETCH EGGS. THERE ARE OTHER DESIGNS THAT WOULD ALLOW YOU TO FETCH THE EGGS WITHOUT BENDING OVER AND OR WALKING ON CHICKEN POOP. BUT OVERALL, GREAT JOB GUYS ....THANKS FOR LOVING ANIMALS!!!
This is the most beautiful chicken palace! I love it! ❤️ very lucky chickens!
Constructed for human indulgence. The ground cover is especially not suitable. Not absorbent. Bad for chicken feet. The tree perch is too dense in the branches. The flowering plants should have planted outside the crop for human pleasure.
When I move I really wanna build one just like this. It’s so pretty and absolutely love it. I was waiting for this video of ages. ❤️🌸🌼
Mom your voice is so shrill and LOUD! Turn down your mic. The chickens will destroy your flowers and plants
That’s the prettiest Chicken coop I’ve ever seen!!
Love it!!
1. I have never seen plants in a chicken coop.
2. Chickens need a sand box. To take dust baths.
3. It looks more like a she shed than a chicken coop.
4. I hope it has worked for your chickens. 🐓🌻
We would all love to see transformations and all things in this nature! Great content🦃
You may have to adjust the tree perch. Chickens dont cluch a perch like a regular bird. They like their feet flat. Consider 2x4s and maybe clear underneath so you can place a poop hammock that can be rinsed off easily or at least so you can rake up quickly since that is where youll have the most poop.
2 minutes ago- I think this is the closest I've gotten (that I can remember) to right when they post it lol
Wow, that's amazing! Only Danelle would make a chicken zone this fancy!😀 It'll be interesting to see how long it'll stay so nice. I didn't see any water.🤔
The new coop looks amazing.
1 question though, you did the nice egg box so you could get eggs from outside, will you add that later to the new one?
i’m so excited to see it
