Bloody hell, this one takes me down memory lane, I remember this from when I was a kid, and well before the Galaxy smartphones. A bit of additional trivia too- Samsung is Korean for 'Three stars', hence the logo design.
My family's first experience with Samsung was not a good one. My Grandfather bought a Samsung made JC Penney branded 19 inch tv. The set had remote control and electronic tuning. The set went through 4 tuners in 5 years. On the brighter side, Samsung assembled the set in the USA. The set ended up still working into 2011. But, still, I love poking fun at Samstunk. Scamsung, Samdung, Scamscum, I personally have had mixed experiences with this company. A VERY GOOD phone. An excellent 14" TV from 2002. A crappy top end model VCR from 1996, a washing machine from 2013 that had rust issues and a poorly engineered tub cover seal. The rusty top and door were replaced by Best Buy's protection plan (after a HUGE fight, and threats to go to social media) the defective tub cover has a gasket that continually goes bad and dumps water all over the floor in Aquajet mode. This last repair seemed to lick that problem, though. Samsung is like General Motors, when they fuck up, oh boy, they FUCK UP! When they do something good, it's the best product ever. Electrically and mechanically, the Samsung washer has been excellent.
Yea that’s Samsuck for you. I got a Samsuck washing machine died on me less than 5 years old and then the fridge also less than 5 years old stop making ice. Thankfully I replace the Washing machine with Whirlpool although I would prefer a Hitachi and Fridge with LG which a better Korean brand for me
I remember those Samsung ads. The early Samsung products were shite with VCR power supplies that blew up just out of warranty. There was one and that showed a G11 TV and a 3V22 VCR being disposed of and replaced with Samsung products. I'd rather have kept the G11 and 3V22.
Had I been starting my own business around this time, I would’ve taken one of those unwanted black and white TVs (if still working properly) so I had something to connect my work computer to! (I would’ve gotten one of those £100 Toshiba packs to use as my work computer, providing I can find finance and database software for it that can be used on a black & white TV!)
I saw some Korean TVs during my High school or College days if my memory serves me right. One is Samsung and One or mre of those is Goldstar 😂. (P.S. Watching from my Galaxy TAB S4)
Seems like a great marketing scheme as they show one with as an RCA model the other a Zenith model, after all I prefer a Sony over a Samsung or in that case I had an RCA TV and I never had a problem, Samsung TVs from those days where problematic. I prefer either and RCA LX Series or a Sony Trinitron over a Samsung any day in that era. Samsung is mocking Apple just what Chevy does with Ford and what Pepsi does with Coke.
Well, in defense of Samsung back then (and GoldStar for that matter), they didn't pretend to be anything more than what they were: a value-priced brand of electronics. While they didn't excel, they were halfway decent. Still better than, say, Funai from the late 1990s onwards.
Watcher3223 I think Goldstar are slighter higher in quality than Samsung. Even now for me LG is better than Samsung. Both are better than American brand even and also Funai
Well Samsung was the fifth most buyed tv brand in our country in 1987 the first was National or Panasonic the second is Sanyo the third is Sharp the fourth is Goldstar (LG) then the fifth was Samsung followed by Hanabishi and White Westinghouse
I wonder what TVs Which? recommended at the time? My parents have had the best history with Sony. Our first HDTV was a Sony 32 inch Wega, it didn’t have HDMI but the component inputs meant I could still enjoy my Xbox 360 and PS3 in HD! Shortly after, we got a 40 inch Sony Bravia that DID have HDMI!
I wonder what TVs Which? we’re recommending at the time? It was either this year or last they said you should put Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries in your high drain devices and Aldi Activenergy in your low drain ones, so the latter are the brand currently in my original DMG Game Boy!
Chinese TV? LoL, I think you mean American Made TV. If there are Chinese TV in the 80s I'm sure they are very bad. I still prefer Goldstar(LG) but Samsung are okay too.

Samsung is no.1 Korean Electronics company
It's a shame they dropped the three star logo ("Samsung" literally means "three stars")
My first color tv set was Samsung back in 1989. It was crap comparing with Philips tv at the same price range :D

Yea, this was when Samsung made very cheap electronics and failed to impress the market.
