But even without his sword, I fully believe he would have WON.
There’s actually a “what if” story where he goes into the dungeon by himself and makes it to the fourth floor. Not sure how it goes from there; he’s last seen taking the long way while singing to ward off the mermaids’ song.

From what I can tell, the monster that was creating the illusions was a Kitsune, hence the many tails. Kitsune do not like dogs since they tend to see through their illusions and disguises, so Laios acting like a dog is what provoked the monster.
Senshi also refers to the impression as being of a ‘hunting dog’. Fox hunting tends to involve hounds, so even a non magical fox has a reason to hate the sound of barking..:
