The reason you can feed a sweet potato to a horse and not the potato is because they not related. Potatoes are in the nightshade family. And sweet potatoes are related to morning glories.
Love how the horse knows what it can and can’t eat as well. It doesn’t take a peak at the bad foods but does a tortoise-neck at the food it can eat, lol.
I had a horse that would eat anything. And I do mean anything . Whole oranges with the rind, dill pickles, hotdogs were only a few of the the things that the working students fed him while I was boarding him. I was sure he was going to die from dill pickle colic after a Christmas party, but his digestive system was unflappable, and he enjoyed everything he ate. We were very lucky.
I used to eat orange rinds. They're actually pretty good for you, not to mention insanely good fertiliser as demonstrated by a study in south America to revitalise a diminished area of the Amazon rainforest using tons of orange rind industrial waste (from orange juice producers) that would otherwise have gone to rot somewhere in a landfill.
One way you can feed bread to a horse is by letting it dry out completely first, untill its all crispy, and then feed it in small amounts. Fresh bread will create large lumps when chewing, and those cause the issues.
It’s funny how grapes are toxic to dogs but not to horses Edit: I think I started a war in the comments and just to clarify, I do know horses can not throw up and they Colic when that happens. Most dogs are sensitive to the oxalic acid in grapes. Horses on the other Hand are plant eaters. You could Feed them an entire bucket and it still Not BE toxic. Just bad because their digestion cant handle that much fruit
If you choose to feed bread, only do it in super small amounts. I know a horse that ADORES PB&Js and donuts. And my horse has been known to steal a roll without permission. And dunk his nose in my cereal. Milk and all. Not my intention and I had no idea he would do that. Thankfully he was fine.
Thanks for all the good Tipps! But can a horse eat Rice waffels? I heard that they can, just want to make sure they really can.(Also only small pieces so they don't choke..)
