Asia-inspired night market lights up S.F. Sunset District

- The night market arrives at a crucial time for businesses in the Sunset District which have been grappling with an increase in crimes that have driven customers away. José Martínez reports. (9-15-23)
Back in the late 80s and early 90s in the Asian area of Los Angeles, there were lots of restaurants still open till 2am. It was fun. My friends and I always hung out late and ate and chilled at these places. The food was great and the memories were awesome. The landscape has changed. I don't see many restaurants open that late anymore.
I miss the night markets traveling to Asia myself my wife from Shanghai would bring me out at 10 PM at night. I remember my first time I thought everything would be closed but it was very busy and lively. Lots of commerce going on lots of families out till midnight or 2 o’clock in the morning..

Just came back from the Night Market. It was super crowded, but amazing. Some food stalls had lines a block long. All the restaurants on the street had long lines as well. And the crowd overflowed to restaurants 8 blocks away. I think nobody expected such a big turnout. On my way back home around 8:10pm, I saw more people walking to the Night Market from 15 blocks away.
Any videos to share? No upload for more than 3 years. Left SF since the shutdown?
It sounds like so much fun!! Hopefully next year we can get there, it’s cool to see everyone happy 😊 a lot of times I live simultaneously, I miss living in the sunset

As someone who grew up in the Sunset district, having the night market is something we desperately need to add some life and energy back in this quiet district.
How about adding some armed security?
In many parts of East and SE Asia, people are our for entertainment and food till 2am and later. But this can be done as these countries are very safe. Crimes are not tolerated and severely punished. Also the majority of people behave very differently in public unlike in the US.
True. Unfortunately, eventually, more of the thugs who make SF unsafe will be drawn to the area and prey on the attendees and their vehicles. Then, few will want to visit the area.
What a great ideas. Maybe this can be done in different neighborhoods. Spread the joy. Get the people out to reclaim there city. There are many more good people then there are evil people.

I’ve tried going to a couple of these around the Bay Area, and found that the food costs three times as much, and is not even half as good as the ones in Asia.
milk: Yes, well, the vendors in Asia probably do not have to pay as much for anything as they do in SF.
Heller, the rent in Asia is prolly nil compared to CA and labor is also very minimal in Asia..

Nevertheless, the value proposition is not there for me. not saying it isn’t worthwhile for others to try it out .
But I will just keep going to my normal consistent/dependable B&M places for now (and also look forward to my next Asia trip)

Maybe over advertised… so crowded you could barely walk. OMG I almost kicked a little dog. People seem pretty excited for it though.

In Cambodia they call it PubStreet and their nightmarket is very successful among the locals and tourists. All the vendors do well.
Night market in Oakland will become nightmare market

Somebody goofed.....This event is a great idea, however it was not reported in the local SF newspaper. SF needs to advertise the nice fun events. What happened SF Gate???
Another commenter said it was a huge success. In fact, there were too many attendees. They said that one of the vendors had a line a block long, and restaurants in the area were swamped.
It was covered by all the local news networks prior to the event
Does anyone remember play land? It was on Taraval I think, I was too little to remember but I saw pictures of my brother there in the 70’s😂 it could have been near doggie diner but since my family is gone now it’s one of those places I’ve wondered about
Playland at the Beach used to be at Ocean Beach ... near the Cliff House but on the beach area. Great history! Laughing Sal, a carnival type game, was famous. :)

Turning recently defunct Nordstroms into a big arcade, the most useless idea ever. Also, the idea of changing SF center into a soccer stadium, and civic center into a skateboard park, additionally stupid!
Oh yeah? What do you think they should do with the Nordstrom space then? It's a GREAT idea instead of stacking more retail shops together.. Having more entertainment centers brings people out to enjoy the City.
A skateboard park is a great idea to be added to that space of the civic center. The soccer stadium idea was taken out of context (just like many things on the internet now a days) .. the Mayor was simply just saying there's a lot of options besides retail at the Westfield Center.

It sucks! Absolutely NO public parking and NO public restrooms! Should do this at the Stonestown Mall instead!
Make SF an entertainment attraction. Turn alcatraz into an amusement park.
The smash and grab is the legislature’s responsibility. San Franciscans need to stand against this bizarre law.
The demand is obviously there. You want people to come to SF increase the focus on people and lessen the focus on cars.
Obviously there are other issues that need fixing as well but they didn’t stop people for showing up for this in huge numbers.
Good start but you all need FOODDDDD and not much else. Why don't you get smart and use the same areas that Farmer's market us during the weekend. Hope it gets FOOOOOD it was more like the stalls at a farmers market minus the veggies and nothing much food. It was super crowded.... a parking lot might be better suited.
