I grew up spending summers at Harley Bay and worked at Kamp Kaintuck and a few lodges as a fishing guiding. Just a note that where you turned left to cross the very open Wanapitei Bay at Kamp Kaintuck... If it's windy and you're not staying at SIte #618, which we call The Bad River Turn", the Wanapitei River is a good protected alternate route and often you'll see lots of wildlife (turtles, deer, herons, eagles, etc.) along the shores. You could also turn left before that, the first channel on your left after leaving Hartley Bay, and head towards the French River Lodge (FRL) via the :S-Turn" as it's protected from the west winds. Then, once you pass the FRL head south toward the main channel at Eaglesnest Island and hug the west shore to avoid the west winds.I highly recommend touring the Bad River and south towards The Fingerboards through the many stunningly beautiful "inside channels". Afternoon (2:00-4:00PM) bass fishing on the inside fringe of the south Fingerboards can be rewarding. Lindy Rig with hook and worm ;-)
Absolutely loved the video!! My wife and I are planning this exact same trip. Thank you for taking us along on your adventures.
You're welcome, I hope you and your wife will make beautiful memories along this route. Let me know how it goes!
Great video- excellent production quality- subscribing to see what else you have. Planning a trip with my (adult) daughter and was looking for some ideas. The Old Voyageur channel looks perfect. Cheers from London.
Hey Scott! Thank you very much for the encouragement, and I'm very glad to hear that this was a helpful video for you. Anywhere in the Delta area is an amazing place for a trip as you will see some of the most splendid beauty that Ontario has to offer. Cheers from Sarnia!
That was great, what a wonderful couple!
How the hell does this video only have 3800 or so views ?? This should be in the 100s of thousands. Well done. you are more than RUclipsr.. youre a filmmaker for sure. excellent work man!
Wow thank you so much Brandyn! Very high praise and I really do appreciate that🙏 Did you watch the French River documentary I made called North to South? If not, check it out, it's the type of quality I'm aiming for going forward. I'm so happy you enjoyed this video and that you took the time to write such an encouraging comment as well, thank you again!
@@LatitudesWildernessFilmsthat was the first one of your work that I saw and I watched it twice! Thought you had dumped by thankfully it wasn't that bad. I sent that to my dad because we are planning on doing a trip to French River this year and it's a perfect introduction. I absolutely love the fact that you put allot of detail about the voyageurs and the history. It adds allot more to the film. Makes you really appreciate where you are. Thanks again for sharing your trips! Really looking forward to seeing more.
Great little video thoroughly enjoyed it. I spent many years in Hartley Bay and the Wanipita.
Have also been all the way down to Georgian Bay and over to the train trestle part way down the main channel then to the east.
You did a good job capturing the beauty and serenity of the French. Thanks again 🙂
Hey Richard, thank you so much for your kind words! I've never been over to the train trestle, there is so much to explore in this area that I doubt I'll ever be able to see it all, but I'll certainly try! All the best to you 👍
Pete, good to see you and Marc from Open Air Outdoors get-together, keep well, regards Paul from south east Australia.
I introduced my husband to canoe tripping 10 years and it’s become the become the best thing for our marriage. Our times out there, working through a tough portage in the rain, facing a headwind, or breathing in the quiet beauty bring us closer together. Our there, we are a team. May you have many more adventures together
Hey Vicki, thank you so much for your kind comment! I'm so happy to hear how canoe tripping has been such a wonderful bonding experience for you and your husband. It's hard to imagine a better experience for a couple to draw closer together. All the best to you both!
Thanks for taking us along with your adventure.
You are very welcome, thank you for watching and commenting!
Can't even count how many times I've watched this video. Amazing capture of the beautiful French river. We are planning to go this summer finally!
Hi Barb, thanks so much for the encouraging words! I'm so happy you are planning a trip to this beautiful river, I'm sure you'll make many memories that last a lifetime. All the best to you!
Excellent job on the video ,beautiful area
Thank you very much!
Nice, most of my canoe trips I go with my wife!
She will get better in time. White water!!
I love being able to do what I love most with the person I love most, and I'm sure you feel the same way! Cheers!
Very peaceful and tranquil...and I see you both even enjoyed some alone time...excellent adventure...
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed watching. The time we spent together was amazing, my wife is a trooper to deal with me😂 All the best to you!
Nice trip. Thanks for taking me along . Too bad about the fishing but that's the way it goes sometimes. Cheers
Hey thanks Rob! The French holds some giants I'm sure. Next time! Thanks for stopping by, cheers🍻
Excellent video once again! Love seeing all your adventures!
Excellent job Judy 👍👍 way to hang in there and power threw those paddling strokes!!!!
Thanks so much Christine! Judy was a champ, she powered right along and made me so proud!
Very nice video. All your videos are very interesting 👍
Awesome I'm so glad you are enjoying them! Lots more to come 👍
very well made. Love the french river delta
Hey thanks so much, that's nice to hear! This area is truly unique and beautiful. In a few weeks I'll be paddling the entire river from Nipissing all the way to Georgian Bay, super excited for that trip! Cheers 🍻
@@LatitudesWildernessFilms in a few weeks will be just in time! No mosquitoes, and cool weather. I wish you well on your trip. Ugh how much i wish I can be out there!
Excellent info Peter and Judy. Thanks.
That's great you got your wife on a canoe trip and she enjoyed it despite the headwinds. The southern winds coming up the French River is notorious. Despite the cottages and boats, the French River is a great place to paddle, especially if you tuck in away from the main channels and get off the beaten paths.
Thanks so much for checking this out David! We really had an amazing time after all, it's such a stunning place to paddle. Bill and I leave to paddle the whole river Oct 14👍 Fingers crossed for northern tailwinds... Look forward to catching up on your latest videos!
Awesome trip Pete! Judy did awesome! Some tough winds out there. Everyone loves a tailwind. Thanks for taking us along brother!
Hey thanks so much for checking this out! My wife is a trooper, no doubt. I so appreciate the support Doug, cheers man!
Thank you much! I’m a Canuck stuck in Florida now. (With a few years stop in China in between, long story!) but missing that Ontario wilderness! Can’t wait to get back up there for a visit when this season passes. Really appreciate you bringing us along for the journey!
Hey Matt thanks so much! I couldn't be apart from the beautiful Ontario wilderness for too long, I hope you can be back here sooner than later. Cheers! 🍻
So enjoyed this trip!! Love it when you two go together!! Great job with the head wins Judy!! We'll done! So looking guests to your next trip you two! So enjoy these videos Pete!!
Hey Aunt Marg thank you so much! Judy nailed it out there, she was a champion! I'm so glad you are enjoying the videos, more to come! Bill and I have a big adventure coming mid October 👍
So I hear, that's so wonderful ❣️. Really look forward to seeing that one as well!!
Judy is a real trooper🙂, and loved your re-enactment of Judy's frustration moment lol that was hilarious 😆, great vid do more with judy in em she is funny 😄
Haha this is awesome 😂 Thanks so much Daryl, I'm so glad you enjoyed this and had some laughs! Somehow Judy is still married to me after I put her through this trip lol... She'll appear again in the future for sure. Thanks for the encouraging words my friend!
@@LatitudesWildernessFilms Thanks brother stay awesome and you both ROCK!!!!!!!
Love the French River area. Spent some nice time there this summer. Looking forward to exploring it more. That hammock looked comfortable!
Thanks for checking this out man! I just got back from paddling the entire river from Nipissing to Georgian Bay, it was epic journey! Such a beautiful place, one of many in our amazing province. Cheers🍻
Just did that same trip last summer in August. Down Old voyager channel to Georgian Bay across to Bass lake and back up to Hartley Bay. That south wind was a killer but the views were worth it.
Hey Derrick, thanks for stopping by! That is a beautiful route no doubt, I have yet to venture up the Bass Lake way but it's on my radar. And yes, that south wind has been killer many days that I've spent on the river. Cheers! 🍻
@@LatitudesWildernessFilms Bass lake route was beautiful, no cottages and no other canoes
Great Video!!
Thank you so much!
driving down hartley bay road you would of passed 3 houses my grandfather built such a wonderful area gods country, i was also a fishing guide out there at Kamp Kentuck, not sure you seen it or not but what a lovely place
Hey Chris that is so cool! I'd love to live in that area somewhere and have such better access to the north (rather than driving at least 6 hours like I do now!) I'm not familiar with that camp, but if you got paid to work in that area, you can't beat that 👍
Good job, lady💃👍
Yup she nailed it👍🛶
My wife and I did a similar trip several years ago and it didn't seem to matter which direction we went the wind was always in our face. A challenging area for sure. Our trip was cut short by a fire ban and I didn't bring a stove with us. Anyway, beaitiful trip, well filmed.
Hey there, thanks so much for watching and for commenting! It is a challenging area, I've been back several times since this was filmed and each day will present a new challenge more often than not. Nevertheless, the beauty of that area makes it all so worth it. Sorry your trip got cut short, hopefully you can return one day. Cheers!
Love the French! have spent many summer weeks over 20 years there! I was suprised to see on 618 the fire pite right next to a tree! next time try the 18 Mile Island loop, better wind hiding spots! and the rapids are GREAT!
Hey thanks so much for checking this out! Yah I've heard I should check out the 18 mile loop, I've only ever been on the south end of it. My cousin and I paddled the entire length of the French River from Nipissing to Georgian Bay this past October, I have a documentary coming out about that story and about the river's history. That will be out in the next few weeks, keep your eyes open! Cheers! 🍻
I can’t believe that’s the first canoe trip with your wife . My wife was in the boat every chance she had before we got married. But she was a real country girl and fish with her folks long before we got together. That’s what I loved about her. I was a big city guy but I love hunting and fishing.
Hey Tom, sounds like you married a keeper👍 My wife absolutely loves camping and the outdoors, and we've been on some pretty crazy adventures in the past. This was her first time paddling with me only because I hadn't had my own canoe for that long, and I was always going on solo trips or trips with my cousin Bill before her and I finally had a chance to go paddling together. We are pretty lucky guys to have wives who want to join us on our adventures! Cheers🍻
Thanks for sharing this. We just got a canoe (our first) and as I like to watch expedition style videos to glean from them my wife is pretty nervous.
It’s good to share with her how it is to start out with this thing, for a change.
Hello there, and congratulations on getting your first canoe! I hope you both can make many memories with it together 👍🛶
Canoeing is so much fun! Looks like such a beautiful river. The water is so gorgeous. Love finding other Canadians on RUclips, we subscribed and can't wait to see all of your adventures
Hey thank you so much for checking this out and for subscribing! I'm so glad you enjoyed this, the French River is such a beautiful diverse area. My cousin and I paddled the entire length of the French River including a good portion of Lake Nipissing in October and we filmed the trip to show in a future documentary. Tonight at 7pm EST there will be a trailer/sneak peak of that showing on my channel, check it out! Cheers!
@@LatitudesWildernessFilms That's amazing!! And we will absolutely check it out! :)
Well, I take it your still married so paddling together was a positive experience and that is awesome! lol She may even go on another with you! lol Thanks for sharing your beautiful trip! :) :)
Haha yup we're still going strong after this experience! I felt so badly that her first ever paddling trip was in some of the worst winds, but thankfully Judy absolutely loves camping and really enjoyed the whole trip. Thanks for watching Jacqueline!
Nice to “meet” your wife. Looked like a good first trip for her. Too bad the fishing wasn’t all that productive. I had similar when I was there last, we did however discover that it was easy to catch channel cats right off of our site.
Hey Rob thanks for checking this out! I'm thankful the wind came for the first part of the trip, and that we ended it during more normal conditions so Judy could end the trip on a better note. I was surprised with the fishing for sure, I did read reports after we got home saying that the Delta end has become less productive in a recent years. Oh well, being out there trying is better than working lol! Cheers man 🍻
Ontario Fishing Quest I’ll be headed out to “secret lake” Friday. I’ll let ya know how it goes. But bass isn’t my primary focus for this trip.
@@paddlehooked4687 awesome man, I hope you crush some good ones! Looking forward to hearing how it goes 👍
Although you hit up strong winds it sure looked like it was an enjoyable relaxing trip! Awesome to both of you for such a nice little outing 👍 (but deep down inside we all know it’s all about the free flowing hair) 🤣
See you on the next one🍻
😂😂 LOL I'm so glad caught that plug I threw in there for you 👍Yup we know what's it all really about! Glad you stopped by Marc, your support is always so appreciated and means a lot to both me and Ms Free Flowing Hair😁 Cheers my friend! 🍻
From a young age my dad was kind enough to take me to the upper French River...this is one of the places I'd like to canoe trip...in fact I'd like to canoe trip the length of it
I forgot to add...GREAT VIDEO MATE...REALLY ENJOYED THIS ONE
Hey thanks so much!! Funny you mentioned about tripping the whole length of the French, I'm leaving for that trip mid October 👍 I hope to film a documentary about the experience with some new camera gear. Thanks so much for watching and commenting my friend, cheers! 🍻
@@LatitudesWildernessFilms THATS AWESOME I CANT WAIT FOR THAT VIDEO! When you pass Lunge Lodge thats the place I was talking about also some really good fishing in the bay that lunge lodge is in...DM on insta if youd like any fishing tips (unless you've already been there and/or you would not like to) Cheers mate!
Thanks so much for the video… found it quite helpful. What map (specifically) was that at the 21:15 minute mark? I like how it’s ‘enlarged’ for the route through the river.
Hey there! The map we used is from a company called "Unlostify", and its the West French River map. You can find the map here: www.unlostify.com/
All the best to you!
Gorgeous scenery. I’ve never had good luck fishing the French, but I’m not that great of a fisherman at the best of times.
Yah the fishing eluded me on this trip. I have heard mixed reports about the fishing on the French the last few years, but it does seem like it's on the rebound thankfully. I'd like to fish where the river empties into Georgian Bay, I think that could be a money spot! Cheers Derek!
Thank you for posting this video....after owning cottage and big cruising boats, we sold our home and live in a condo in Toronto...We want to buy a canoe for
Ontario exploration....
Your review of your canoe sold me..I like the light weight and strength..perfect for loading on top of our suv..also the weight capacity and stability appeal.....I have canoed many times in my younger days...I used to
Duct tape my paddles together so I could paddle like a kayak...very quick...
Here's a dumb question..
When you paddle solo, you sit on the wider seat facing forward...
When you paddle with 2,
Do you reverse positions?..with your wife facing forward on the wider seat?...
Hi there, I'm glad you are looking into buying a canoe! I do love my prospector 15. If you want a little more space you can go up to the 16 for only a slight increase in weight, and you can still paddle it solo. Yes, for solo travel I always turn the canoe around and paddle in the wider front seat, facing the stern of the canoe as I paddle forward. You can do this with a symmetrical hull like a Prospector. For paddling tandem, my wife would be sitting on the wider front seat and I would be in the stern on the narrow seat. All the best with purchasing a canoe and I hope you can make many memories in it! Let me know if you have any other questions 👍
new sub here, you have a nice channel, quite an enjoyable watch.
Hey Robert! Thanks so much for the encouraging words and for subscribing!
What kind of map did you get that have those camp sites???? Love your videos....
Hi Kathie, thank you so much! Here's a link to the map that we used, it's available for free to download or you can order a hard copy to have on hand as well. www.unlostify.com/ Cheers!!
21:15 What map do you have? It appears a to be different than the one I have from Ontario parks. Your’s seems to be more useful to paddlers
This is the map by unlostify. You can check it out here: www.unlostify.com/
Gorgeous trip! Just curious as to why you chose to go with aluminum gunnels rather than the ash?
Thanks so much! I chose the aluminum gunnels only for the reason that I'm hard on my gear and would prefer to not do the necessary maintenance to keep them in good shape. I didn't want anything that I would have to "baby", but rather just use as hard as I can. Thanks so much for commenting, and for subscribing! Cheers!
22:51. What are(is) the River Cats Peoples Church?
That an old church league 2-pitch shirt!
👍
curious what map you are using, seems like a great map
I was using the map by Unlostify, you can on unlostify.com if they have any available. It covers the west end of the river from Hwy 69. It's a great map to own!
How long of a paddle from your site down the channels and back? Wondering if it's possible to do more channels in a day
Hi there! That campsite (708) is about one km to the mouth of the channels, if you stayed there you could go up and down several channels in one day, no problem at all. The only issue is during high water periods, venturing back up channels can be a bit challenging. I've had to line up or portage some sections. But middle of the summer it's no issue at all. Hope you can explore these beautiful channels!
Hello, are there any rapids or portages on this route?
Hi there, there are no rapids or major portages on the route from Hartley Bay Marina to to Georgian Bay if you take the old voyageur channel. The most you'll have is the odd short carry in the channel if the water levels are low. Watch my documentary titled "North to South" (specifically chapter 5) and you'll see this area in more detail.
