  • This is a comparison of the Guild Starfire III and the Guild Starfire IV guitars with audio samples and video of both guitars. The pickups are the same on both guitars but the Guild Starfire III is a hollow body and the Guild Starfire IV is a semi-hollow body. Please leave me a comment and tell me which sound you prefer. I just found a Starfire III Dynasonic at Sweetwater and jumped right on it. Discounted heavily!! I always wanted a hollow body, a guitar with a Bigsby, and one with dynasonic pickups, and this checked all the boxes!!

Great comparison demo. Now that’s how you do it.

I have an early 2000’s Starfire III, very similar to this one. It has that same pingy tone that I love so much. 😊

Of these particular recordings, I choose the IV hands down. The III is hard on the ear. Now having said that, that's what volume, tone controls on the guitar, amplifier or mixer as well as effects are for. No doubt the III can sound warmer with tweaking but I like the IV!

Thanks Gerry for you comment. Especially coming from a working guitarist and musician who has been gigging for as long as I can recall! I don't want to keep both guitars but I'm having a hard time deciding! Hope all is well my friend!

@@solemoose That's so funny Gerry because depending on the when people saw me play they identify me with different instruments. I started on trumpet but never performed on trumpet. I played guitar in my first bands till I switched to bass. Play bass for many years and they started playing mostly keyboards. If you've been around music long enough you learn a little about all instruments but guitar is my first love. It's the greatest musical instrument ever invented! And when you plug in to your favorite amp and get that sound you've been searching for, it's magical! I would say second to that is Hammond B3. I've also become a Hammond and Leslie fanatic. That's another magical sound! All the best Gerry!

Excellent comparison! For me, the red Starfire III sounds more interesting and had a squirrelliness in the bridge pickup that I love. Sounds like a 1965 garage band tone. Can you play “Gloria”?? E-D-A…..

Hey Wayne, Congrats on producing and recording the new Dion album. So many notable icons in the Rock and Roll appear on the album with him it's amazing. And it's amazing the Dion is still ROCKING and still sounds great! Now the Starfires...I know the comparison does not favor the Starfire IV but the IV has other qualities that appeal to me. I know this video is all about the sound and you are absolutely right, the III has this raw edge to it that makes the sound come alive. The hollow body emphasizes tones and makes things resonate and brings a lot of character to the sound. But I have to tell you I'm having a lot of fun playing the IV too. Thanks for the comment!

I thought the iv pushed more mids while the iii was more mid scooped which makes up the largest tonal diff. III has more high end and low end thump but that iv pushes mids beautifully. Either guitar will depend on amps and pedals. For example a iii will sound great through a mid pushed tweed fender. But the iv will fill out the mid scoop on a black face etc... But most importantly you can pickup used guilds from not too long ago for v v affordable prices compared to what the bigger guys are making. You can epiphones for the same money these go for used. Most guitar you can get for the money hands down.

Are you saying Epiphones are better than these Korean Guild reissues or you are saying the other way around? I know the made in USA older Guilds are fantastic guitars. The USA made Starfire IV leaves nothing to be desired compared to a 335.

@@ltvddvtl nope im saying for the price of those higher end epis which are nowhere near as well made as these Korean guilds, or have the nice materials these have you can and should grab one of these.

The Starfire 3 reminds me of a telecaster played using the bridge and the Starfire 4 would be the telecaster played using the neck. Both sound good in their own way. Coincidentally that you posted this video today as I just got my Guild M120 acoustic delivered today from Sweetwater. From what I can tell my particular guitar is really good sounding and the quality is right up there if not better than the Martin's and Taylor's within the same price range.

Hey DM, Guild is making really amazing instruments again. I wish this could be done in the good ole USA but I'm thrilled to see them back and regardless of where they are being made, they look, feel and sound great! Congrats on your new Guild and please subscribe if you haven't already!

I have a 1966 SFlll, and mine sounds less “metallic “than yours, and more like the iv here in the video. I like the sound of both of yours.

Your SFIII has a one-piece aluminum bridge, right?
I replaced the bridge on my Korean Guild Aristocrat with a rosewood one and it sounds more authentic, woodier, much more direct and focused. Now it is a great instrument as it should be.

Both very different in sound with my head phones on. If you like a thinner sharper but clean the iii. If you like a round more mellow I think iv.
Both could have their place. For me I would probably go iv but playability would be a large part also. Both equal in that I would probably still go iv.
I'm no pro but I have played since 7. I love the different sounds you can get from different guitar's. Every part and shape can be the same and that one just reaches out to you. That's the one most of us know before we quit playing and are figuring just how we are going to justify taking it home. Well, if you are married. Even more so with kids from swaddled to college.

Starfire IV .. by far better , warmer , fuller and superior in every way .. that III sounds thin and has no body .. my vote? By far the IV - to my ears really no comparison .. I have 1998 Manhattan X170 that beats them both

Hey Jimi, Thank you for the comment. I got the IV just because it looked cool! I loved those Guilds back in the 60's. But it turns out it plays, feels, and sounds really good. I'm thrilled that Guild is back and making really nice guitars again that are affordable. And it comes with a hard shell case!!

I think the DI is coloring the sound very distinctly. Neither one of these guitar tones sound "good" to my ear. But the III is significantly fuller sounding to me.
