    Good videos of the controller, I have Emco compact 6 cnc running linuxcnc at the moment but I hate the computer and extra hardware needed. Did a retro on a manual lathe using xc609t but it lacks ladder and macro for the turret so this seems like a perfect option.

    Nice video, i have the same lathe, only older, when it was still called EMCO Compact 5, I have it with the toolchanger too, and i have retrofitted it to EdingCNC, and i have written a number of Macro's to allow me to operate with cycles.
    in the near future my lathe will get an upgrade with a stronger motor, and an enclosure (an Old EMCO TM02 Cabinet)
    Seeing how easy it is to replace the spindle bearings i will do that too, because these haven't been changed in 37 years (that's how old the lathe is)

      Thanks! The emco 5 cnc also seems like a nice machine. I found it surprising that it has more or less the same cast iron base as the 50 and 55 models. Apparently they used this for many years. Having the enclosure is a huge improvement. Otherwise chips get everywhere.

      @@uptimefab7412 Yes, the Mechanical base of the machine is identical, except for the latest iteration. which has a wide ball rail for the Z-axis..
      Your machine had different Steppermotors, Berger-Lahr, which are 5 Fase, Nice idea, but now we have Micro stepping..
      The EMCO Compact 5 CNC had "regular"steppermotors with only 72 steps/rev, giving a resolution of 1/72 mm, That is why i janked those out, and put in 2Nm Nema 23 Steppers with a 6.35 Shaft (Wich were a direct fit),
      I also replaced the Toolchanger motor, for a Nema 17 Stepper, which makes the ATC much faster.
      Maybe i should make a video when i start converting mine (again)

    Great video series! I'm planning a retro fit to an old Okuma lathe. And think this same set up could work well. But can you tell me if its possible to add pots to this controller to override the axis feeds and rapids as well as a spindle rpm over ride?

      Hi, interesting question. I actually looked into this earlier because I also would have liked override rotary switches. The answer is yes, but you would have to choose between either and MPG or rotary override knobs. This is because they use the same contacts. A couple of parameters have to be changed in the menu to assign the contacts to either of the 2 options. I chose the MPG, but for a professional lathe I would also prefer the override knobs. They have to be a 16 position knob with 4 poles (digital code). There is more info in the user manual in section 6.3 and 7.4.7. on szghauto.com. The more expensive models might support both override knobs and MPG at the same time, have not looked into this.

      @@uptimefab7412 Well I think it would be more than acceptable to be able to switch between the two options. You would use the MPG mainly for jogging in manual mode. setting up. Then when you run in Auto mode the internal PLC could be programmed so the MPG gets switched off those contacts and the parameter allows the feeds and rapid overrides in RUN mode to be activated. The MPG would not work nor would it be needed in AUTO mode.

      That would be a good option indeed. If it can be programmed such that the contacts switch with the operating mode. Not sure if the parameters can also be changed via the PLC. If you ever go this route and get it working please let me know. I have to say I tend to use the incremental steps from the front panel more than the actual MPG, but that may change later.

    Great video - what is the parting tool you are using at the end of the video?

      Thanks! It is a CTP15FRN ZP15 parting tool. It does cut brass (and POM), but I was not very happy with this tool. At 1.5 mm it is a bit wide for small diameter parts and it is intended for stainless steel. As a result, it is not cutting brass very well. I recently ordered some new parting tools, CTPA 10FRN, 1.0 mm wide inserts which are intended for aluminium. I am hoping these will work better in brass, but have not used them yet. Just updated the PDF file on my website with more details and links to a number of tools, including the two mentioned above, for both the inserts and matching tool holders. Please note that these parting tool inserts are not cheap compared to other tools on Aliexpress, but these insert tool holders are the only ones that easily fit in the Emco turret.

    I suggest you try to use the gsk post-processing files in the fusion360 post-processing library. Most of the CNC systems in China are based on the gsk manufacturers. They should be generic.

      Just had a quick look and it I deed seem to produce code that should compatible with the SZGH. It does seem very similar to the output of the fanuc post so I will stick with that for now since I already modified that slightly for my situation, but the GSK post also looks like a good option as a starting point. Again based on a quick look.

    Seems silly to have an encoder with 4096 counts per spindle rotation, but the controller reduces it to a much less accurate 0 to 359 degrees?
    Is that just for display? Surely for auto threading etc the controller will make use of the full spindle resolution?

      Yes, my guess would also be that it is just rounding the display value but uses the actual resolution. Since there are also versions of this controller with a 4th axis (C) it would not make sense to round to full degrees. For threading that would probably be fine though.

      Yes, I am using CAM software. Fusion 360 with a slightly modified Fanuc post processor. The Fanuc post works but may need modifications for some canned cycles, like peck drilling. Since I do not have a paid license for Fusion it is limited in tool changes and rapids, so I will be looking for alternatives. Also use manual programming in the controller for simple parts, which works fine.

      The 1000 model looks like a very nice unit, but was a bit big for my lathe. If it helps I can place the post I use on my website later today, but as mentioned for my lathe very little had to be changed. I can only recall the pecking cycle, but maybe one other thing. I will add any changes in a comment in the article. Not sure if there is a difference between 990tdb and 1000 models for interpretation of the G-code. Note that I did not test many other canned cycles, so there could be more issues.

      Sure no problem, the CPM for this video is €9,25. For others not familiar with this term, it is what advertisers pay. My revenue (RPM) is €2,61. This brings the total to €21,46 for 8,2k views. I am not quitting my day job any time soon:).

      These indeed have the same dimensions as the 6006, thank you for the tip! Wil have a look at these if the bearings are worn out again.

    Totally the wrong type of bearings for that application? A standard ball bearing is not designed for axial loads, you should change them for angular contact which may cost more but will give you a more accurate and reliable machine in the long run? A nice little machine and wouldn’t mind one myself to play with👍

      Thanks! I might change them out for 7006-2z angular contact bearings (tip by other viewer). They should have the same size. For light occasional use the 6006 bearings do work, but there is always room for improvement. Working on the lathe at the moment, will see if I can find some reasonably priced bearings. Otherwise I might use the current ones until I run into issues.
