Thank you so much for your step by step guide. I’m 64 and have never done electrical wiring before but with your help, I figured it out. I was stumped with the R jumper until you explained it. I patched, sanded, painted, drilled, connected wires, programmed the thermostat….AND IT WORKS!!! 😊
I just wanted to comment here and say I followed the instructions verbatim and I still can’t believe I did this on my own and trust me I had no idea what I was doing before. My thermostat is working thank you so much for this video. It was pretty easy to do with your instructions and your response to my questions.
Watched your video and it helped me install my new Honeywell thermostat! Couldn't find anyone else to do it. And I'm not a handy person by any stretch. Thank you for your post. Your explanations for precise and awesome.
I attempted to do this by myself without help and it doesnt kick on my air so here I am 😂 thanks for the video!!! I see where I went wrong, I took the jumper out from r and rc. Huge help!
This is awesome. He produced one of the rare videos that show how to connect the wires with the super tiny screws. You may have to buy a speacl screw driver.
Your video is spot on! I have a 4 wire the same configuration. Although I won't buy another Honeywell because after replacing 3 of them in 12 years I've had enough. My wire configuration doesn't have a C wire so can't use a Smart Thermostat without the hassle of getting and installing an PEK extender device. I rent so that won't fly. Will just but a LUX battery operated thermostat replacement. Blue wire in my case as in yours will go to the yellow position. Thank you!
How do you like the Lux? I moved into a house with one that I have nothing but problems with it. No matter what I say the temp on over 67 the unit doesn't kick on and the house gets up to 80. If I set it on any temp lower than 66, the house drops down to 52. I'm used to Honeywell and was considering replacing it with that.
Excellent video. Nice points on spreading the wires out and the "jumper". My thermostat was very old and it had a hard wired jumper. When I 1st looked at it, I was a bit confused but, it all made sense after watching this video. Great video. Nice job. Thanks!
Thanks for creating this video. I wasn’t exactly confident about installing a new thermostat. But I feel more comfortable now. Answer at the end for puzzle is 9 🙂
As far as the wallplate, you can also toenail the screws into the drywall. For those not aware, toenailing is just the carpenter's term for screwing in diagonally. I found this works better than drilling them straight into the sheetrock. Thanks, Jay!
Thanks for a nice clear video. If anyone had troubles while using a jeweler's screw driver, etc., those R and Rc screws are hard to turn. You will need a screwdriver with a small slotted bit, but a regular handle for leverage. I was messed up because I was using little screwdrivers to get into those little holes.
Something that really helps me get leverage when using those little screwdrivers is to put rubber gloves on. I just grab my dish gloves and it works like a charm.
Thanks again for another excellent video! Getting ready to change mine & I always watch your videos before I tackle a new project! The best tutorials online!🙂

Good video thank you. I wish you clearly specified the most important thing - which wire goes to which letter. It is more or less obvious, however I am as many watching this a total newbie so the verbal confirmation would be appreciated. May be you could add that to this video in text or something like that.

TIP FOR THE NOVICE: Honeywell t-stats out of the box short cycle the hell out of heating equipment. The setup instructions say reduce cycles per hour from 5 or 6 to 3 when using a condensing furnace or hot water, but really it should always be reduced. Some of the retail honeywells don't have an explicit cycles per hour setting, it's rolled into equipment type -> for that, in the settings menu, select high efficiency furnace even if yours is mid or low efficiency. This does not apply to heatpumps - there's no compressor cph setting on the retail models.
Thanks for sharing this, I just replaced Google nest with the same model of Honeywell you showed as nest was giving battery discharge msg everyday. I have 4 wires Red, white, black and green, can you please help which one will go where. Thanks in advance
You would need a separate Thermostat transformer for a heating unit and one for the A/C unit unless the new one internally jumps it out which I have yet to come across. Most of the ones I have seen have a jumper
I have 5 wires, i put them all back just the way i took them off, except on my honeywell blue went to B instead of C, and I put the yellow in the Y, and nothing comes on.....help
Thank you for the video. After following your complete steps to complete installation, nothing happens, heating or cooling is not starting at all. Do you know why? Thanks.
You're welcome! Did you turn the power off when you did this install? Did you turn it back on? If power was not off, the 3amp fuse could have blown. Did you double check the wiring? Do you have a multimeter you can check voltage with? You could also try bypassing the thermostat with a little wire. Either at the thermostat or at the furnace, just to check if its a thermostat issue or is it simply not getting power. I have videos on how to bypass a thermostat if you need them.
I have a question, installation is ok (same thermostat) but after 9 months is starting to work funky again (only happens with the AC not with the furnace) and the pins in the back starting to form? A substance like oil, what's going on. I checked all the stuff you said, filters outside unit 😞.
