Georgina, “Million Dollar Bill” was the first track off of the “I Look To You” album. It was written for Whitney by Alicia Keys. The dress worn in this performance was featured in the music video for this song. You can catch a few glimpses from it from the introductory X-Factor montage, which features clips from the music video. I’m still uncertain as to weather or not the dress actually broke or just came loose. If you pay attention you’ll also notice that she fumbles over the lyrics towards the beginning of the song 2nd line). It should be “They played our song. We hit the floor. He held me strong then we danced the night away.”I still love the energy of this performance and the light in Whitney’s eyes as she sings.

Despite all of the factors at play here, she is still vocally superior than anybody performing today. It’s a depressing tragedy what happened to her voice through the years, she was on a trajectory for destruction and couldn’t find her way off of it, and it’s a stark reminder that addiction does not care if you are a mega-superstar with millions and millions of dollars or just a random person on the street. It’s an equal-opportunity life destroyer. The sad part is that all it really ensures is that if you do fall down that rabbit hole, the world will be watching while it happens. My heart breaks for Whitney. She was a tormented soul from the beginning...it’s just that nobody knew. I wonder if she was ever truly happy.

I think the performance was great: she belted all the way up to Eb5 (4:54) with enough support, she’s doing classic Whitney runs and riffs, resonant C5/C#5s throughout, the only real problem was the dress, which I barely noticed 💁🏾‍♀️ Even the rasp fits in with the groove of the song. If you wanna react to the best Million Dollar Bill, it’s the MDB from the Italian X-Factor. Her best performance from this era overall is definitely the I Didn’t Know My Own Strength from the ‘09 AMAs if you wanna continue reacting to this era. She definitely still had it. Also, her pregrammy performance in ‘09 is phenomenal.

5:16 how we all felt watching live on TV. This used to be such a funny performance. Now it’s just so tragic 😭😭😭😭😭😭

I remember my premier in USA a decade ago. A listener brought me the most beautiful dress with my logo embroidered, I felt compelled to wear it on stage and it was a very tight and short corset. Halfway through I felt my boobs might pop up. I made the best to assess but I was so distressed. Pucs from that concert were like "almost" It was so evident the lady gifted me an underchemise for the dress next performances and an extension to sew on. People did not notice much vocally but I felt wardrobe malfunction distracted me a lot

The dress is failing her but she gives her best! She was unstoppable and untouchable! Still untouchable!

Her style team really f’d her over making her wear a dress that long for an up beat song, and then not properly securing the strap 🥺 poor Whitney ❤️

This definitely wasn’t the best showing for her. I honestly think these big performances were very stressful for her at this point. I can only imagine the pressure she felt with the inconsistencies in her voice. (Side Note: her voice changed but it never left. The biggest problem she seemed to have with it is its consistency. There were moments it would literally soar and be crystal clear.) For a better showing of her voice on this particular song, watch this one: ruclips.net/video/di5_w2NdGFs/видео.html. Her voice was very clear for that time in her life.
But whoever chose that dress for this performance should have been fired. She’s used to moving around in long dresses but this was too long. And then the strap. Smh. And they definitely should have had someone walk her down those huge steps at the beginning. There was a lot going on that seemed to distract her in this moment. Kinda sucks being that she was sadly in a “prove herself” place at this point. She handled it well.

have you done a video on how to get a nice vocal growl? if not please could you do one? im really into performing jazz and blues and would love to learn how to do a slight vocal growl from time to time, but in the right way. i have to agree with the comments about her voice (though it wasn't what it once was) is 1000% better than the rubbish we have now.

Whitney Houston was (and still is) one of the greatest singers of all time. I would love you to analyse more of her other live performances from different eras. Even though she wasn't at her best in this 2009 X Factor performance, she still sang very well here (infinitely better than that joke-of-a-judge, Cheryl, sitting in front of her!). Especially when you consider that, only a few years before this (around 2004), Whitney actually lost her singing voice entirely for a while. Decades of chain-smoking cigarettes and cannabis joints laced with cocaine wreaked havoc on her voice. So sad. :-( I would greatly welcome your analysis of her thrilling performance of a medley of songs at the 1994 American Music Awards. Gives me goosebumps, it's so good. If I recall rightly, she sang All The Man I Need, a song from the musical Porgie&Bess, followed by I Have Nothing. Absolutely incredible performance. No-one can hold a candle to Whitney!

No matter what Whitney always had a beautiful voice. .this performance is 100% better then Madonna on Eurovision in Israel. It's sad that God gave whitney I think 5 octave and she finished her life so early killing herself with the addiction .
    Great talent.

    • @ethanjohnson18
      @ethanjohnson18 5 лет назад +1

She only had a little over 3 octaves actually, but that's the thing...such an average range, but God gave her the VOICE, the power, the resonance, the tone. It's sad how her life ended. She was so beautiful inside and out

She shouldn't do a tour to promote her album.
Because of her personality and her knowledge she would have be a perfect judge.
That last tour killed her in my opinion. It must have been a nightmare to be on a stage in front of 10.000 people every night, and be not able to sing properly.
That made her doing drugs again.
I'm still feeling sad about her passing.

Of all performances Whitney Houston did, you looked for one of the worst to judge. Sry, but that's pretty strange, because you usually avoid doing reviews of Whitney Houston.

If anything, I think this performance shows that she still had a great voice and that if she had been able to get through her struggles and had vocal training she could have got back on top.
