Inauguration of the Zao Wou-Ki Research Center

On April 9, the donation ceremony for Zao Wou-Ki’s works and the inauguration of the Zao Wou-Ki Research Center were held at #chinaacademyofart. This donation marks the “homecoming” of Zao Wou-Ki’s works and serves as the most cherished gift he left to his alma mater, CAA.
Ninety years ago, Zao Wou-Ki enrolled in the Hangzhou National College of Art (now CAA) at the age of 15, officially embarking on his artistic career.
On September 19, 2023, the exhibition "The Way is Infinite: Centennial Retrospective Exhibition of Zao Wou-Ki" opened at the CAA Art Museum, making a significant international impact. Following this, Zao Wou-Ki’s family generously donated a total of 213 early works he created during his time in Hangzhou, including oil paintings, prints, and ceramics. This invaluable cultural treasure has now returned to #Hangzhou, to #CAA, filling a long-standing gap in the collection of Zao Wou-Ki’s oil paintings within public art museums in Chinese mainland.
Taking the donation of Zao Wou-Ki’s works as a starting point, CAA will collaborate with the Zao Wou-Ki Foundation to establish an internationally influential Zao Wou-Ki Research Center. Through Zao Wou-Ki's art, which melds past and present while bridging East and West, it will actively contribute to shaping a global art history narrative that integrates China’s voice.
