Good to see they can go that long! I just got power back on after Helene came through, and it was my oil lamps that saved the day. Every single one of my battery-powered lights was useless after sitting a year since the power last went out, but those oil lamps performed flawlessly. I'll be adding a Feuerhand and Meva to my storm gear very soon.
I didn't realize these old lanterns would burn that long. Just found your channel. I love collecting these old kerosene lanterns. Nice to see another collector in iowa.
Now there's video that makes me smile. I really like the Art Deco look of the Embury. It uses the same globe as a Dietz D-Lite in case you ever need a replacement globe. I think Embury made them in the 30's and 40's. Your D-Lite with the circular bent bail that has the little detent piece to hold the bail uptight is pretty old. There is no step in the fuel font like the other one has. My guess is that it was built in the mid 1920's. The date and place of build is stamped into one of the air tubes but is probably covered in paint. The other D-Lite with the stepped fuel font and plain U-shaped bail is probably from the 1950's.
Good burning fuel efficient lanterns thanks for posting and I wouldn’t have thought that they would go that long either I never even tried mine for that long wow 👍
These lanterns seem to me to bridge a gap in history. My mother spoke of using lanterns in the depression era of the 1930s. I recall a story she told of walking home with her brother and sister from a pie supper or other function at the country school when they heard a panther scream in the night....lots of running for home and panic ensued. Only one lantern and 3 people in a race to the house...
Yup those are really nice lanterns & long burn time too & yes mega great for long lasting power outages during a storm! We had like a foot of Snow in Sudbury Ontario! 🙂🙂
I would so love to have a solid condition Dietz American made lantern or at the very least an early Hong Kong model with some vintage quality still there.
This is the definition from the national weather service. Officially, the National Weather Service defines a blizzard as a storm which contains large amounts of snow OR blowing snow, with winds in excess of 35 mph and visibilities of less than 1/4 mile for an extended period of time (at least 3 hours).
In my opinion it is fine to store them with some fuel, but ones that I hang in the rafters of my garage I empty, just so that if they did start to leak it would not be dripping on stuff in the garage.
They are better than anything running batteries, that's for sure! Put a cup of rubbing alcohol in the tank to see if it leaks out anywhere. If not, fill it with lamp oil and enjoy!
I just bought two Dietz/China Air Pilots. I'm a bit nervous that they will be a disappointment. I haven't had a lantern in over 40 years, my only one being a Dietz Jr. (I think) back in the 70s. Carried it on Halloween 👻🎃 a few times. Somehow it got away from me.....
I have a few of the Hong Kong versions are they are pretty decent. I don’t have any experience with the current Made In China versions. Give them a light and see what happens. 😀🔥
I heard that the Dietz has steadily declined in quality. USA, then Hong Kong, then mainland China. The early Hong Kong models probably were first stamped on the original American tooling if I was guessing. I would love to see a newly made American lantern again. But I doubt the market is there for a good profit margin. @@jasper60103
You can see better in the daytime shots that they were not cranked up too high, they wouldn't have lasted that long if I had them cranked up a little more. Thanks for watching!

Both are very solid lanterns. Great for a snow storm. 😀Thanks for sharing.
Swell demonstration. Pretty impressive stuff!
Didn’t know they would run that long. Thanks for sharing

We have had about 2 feet of snow in the last 6 days, and that is a lot for eastern Iowa now days. Definitely the biggest snowfall in several years.

Are "Blizzards" determined by Amount of Snaw fallen or by the Ferocity of the Storm itself?

Great video, would you recommend emptying the kerosene from the lanterns before storing them or is it ok to leave some in the tank?

Nice video! Got close to a foot in idaho
I've got family in south Idaho, I love it out there!
Amazing

Glass will crack with the snow hotting it... mine did...
Are you sure that your dad didn’t take a break from sweeping the floor and refill them lanterns ?
😂😂😂

Maybe Dad was cleaning snow this video 👍
