This song is a throwback even for the 90s. It's produced by Bootsy Collins, the bassist for James Brown and Parliament Funkadelic. The main groove is Herby Handcock, who was among other things was the pianist for Miles Davis(By my personal estimation the 2nd or 3rd most important American musician of the 20th century). Another bit was taken from another James Brown contemporary that Bootsy worked with back in the day. And then another bit by A Tribe Called Quest. All together musicians from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s come together to create one song in the 90s as a kind of one off joke song for fun. And it's awesome.

Yep, the fashion statement and graphics are retro-sixties/seventies MOD/psychedelic. Turn up the Bass more! Everybody liked this one. Blondie started out Punk in NYC during the mid-seventies, but not commercially viable, so branched out across genres as the Disco Craze grew and hit it big, yet kept their Punkish edge. X OFFENDER, KIDNAPPER, SHAYLA, BERMUDA TRIANGLE BLUES (flight 45). I was born in the mid-fifties, yet enjoy '80s music mostly (if you include '79, with stuff like Gary Numan's CARS, and ARE 'FRIENDS' ELECTRIC?).

"_How do you say the groovy...." that was all they need to fill the dancefloors back then, an absolute floorfiller. Sadly most "reactors" just do this one, of course it was their biggest hit, but they made three great albums. First one was a pop album drenched in the most infectious house rhythms; second one, still dancey but with a soul twist and third, an eclectic though balanced mixture of house, rave, jungle and kitschy pop. Another example of short sight record label managment, they just wanted to sell them as a dance act and they were much more deep than that; plus, their singer, Miss Kier Kirby had an extenuatelly long battle with their label (electra) that wouldn't let her use her own name. They even were invited to perform at the prestigious Montreaux jazz festival, respect the groove, respect Deee Lite 👍👋

Before I watch this video, I will say, this is one of my favorite songs of all time, at least in the top 20. I don’t play it every day, but when I do I get down because the groove is in the heart baby.

This was very late '80s I had a DJ promotion copy of it in '89 so, it was before 'A Tribe Called Quest' made it big which was in '91, even though they formed in '88, that's why 'Q-Tip' didn't get billing from the group, the female singer 'Lady Miss Kier' (who was also a DJ) and 'Bootsy Collins' on bass. Parts of this have been sampled, the first time was by,
"A Tribe Called Quest - Can I Kick It (Extended Boilerhouse Mix)",
"SecondCity and George Smeddles - Groove Is In",
    "Latino Party - Arriba!",
"The Orb - Perpetual Dawn (Solar Youth Mix)",
"The Reflex - Groove Is In The Heart (The Reflex Revision)",
"Towa Tei feat' Kylie Minogue - GBI: German Bold Italic",
"Girl Talk - Step To It".
There may be others but these are the ones that I know of.

I think that they wanted this to be a song that people would hit the dance floor no matter how silly you look while dancing. Basically everybody should have the experience having the fun and joy of dancing without any judgement.

This song is pure art. It is a Masterpiece. They joined a legendary funky bassist (Bootsy Collin’s), a legendary soul saxophonist (Maceo Parker), a brilliant hip hop guy (Q Tip), an American singer, a Russian dj, a Japanese dj, and a slowed down Herbie Hancock’s famous bass line (“Bring down the birds”), mixed them all together and gave us this Pearl!!👏🏻👏🏻🚀🚀

In those days we all had a (diff'rent) groove in our hearts... We loved it and respected it from eachother, we lived and learned.

The sax player who wanders in and out towards the end is the legend, Maceo Parker! He was in James Brown’s band, along with Bootsy Collins!

This is fantastic. Just makes me want to dig into the 90s vibe again. There are sooo many great hip hop songs from back then. Missy Elliott, Mary J. Blige, Black Street, Tupac's California Love etc. Great era.

This video ALWAYS brings a smile to my face. It also reminds me to go watch the B52's in the Love Shack video again. :-)
