Great video. I replaced mine and the knocking was still present. I found another actuator directly above the accelerator pedal, replaced it, and that corrected the problem. It was a different part number but the same type of construction and purpose. It was an HVAC Defrost Mode Door Actuator, YH 1881. My truck is 2012 F150 XLT.
The updated Ford OEM (Motorcraft) PN# is YH 1933, for the heater blend door actuator motor. Going to be doing mine next week. Maybe I'll hook a coat-hangar wire to the blend door for future use if needed! 2010 with only 31G actual miles. Thanks Ford! TIP: Let me recommend that to line up the splines, instead of turning it after it's in (not good for the splines..), plug the new one back into the wiring harness BEFORE you attempt to put it in; then turn your ignition and heat/AC on, and the splines should automatically align with where the old ones where. The motors close blend doors when ignition is turned off, and run and re-align to settings when system is turned back on. Another Ford "better idea". I also like to loop a long rubber band around that flat open end wrench and put one end around my wrist. Then if you drop it, it's there tethered to your wrist. I also stick a tad of plumbers putty into the bottom of the sockets, that way the screws stick to it and won't fall out of the sockets and fall down into Never-never land. Just some tips from a guy that's been wrenching since the early 70's...where I actually was a Ford mechanic for a year right outta high school. 😁
I just did this job! Holy crap!!! What a job!!! I'm amazed I was able to get my hand up there. Such slow progress. I stuck with it though and got her done! Very pleased with myself. I put in a lifetime warranty Dorman. I don't want to do this job again!
I'm a total Chevy girl, but driving my late husband's Ford F150 for sentimental reasons. I'm not in the position to pay anyone to do this for me, nor am I one to shirk from a challenge. This video made it pretty simple. And you're damn right about the Ford engineering. Might I mention the placement of the oil filter? Wth is up with that? It took me a day to find it!!
From the looks of snow outside in your video, your in a cold climate. On my 3rd one, I changed the grease inside to cold weather grease. I have had mine since 2013 and still works (3rd blend door actuator) Cold weather turns that grease to like rock. Plastic’s break easily in cold climate. For me, I carefully opened it up a new OEM one and cleaned that useless grease and used Amsoil Arctic Synthetic Grease witch covers to -75 f. Good luck on your next one 🤙🏻
My man, this video was pin point perfect. I’ve had the same issue for a few months, but the noise would stop after a few minutes of driving , last two days it wasn’t stopping. This video was super helpful. Thank you brother.
Thanks for your video. I just finished replacing the heater blend door actuator on my 2011 ford f150. That back screw was a pain. However, I couldn’t use a small ratchet to remove it. Instead I used a small 5/16” box wrench. Took less than 5 minutes. Thanks again.
Si remueves el pedal del gas que tiene 3tornillos, puedes cambiar esa parte sin hacer tanto movimiento de partes, espero aporte con este comentario , si yo lo hice tú también podrás, saludos 🤝🤝
Thank you!! Your just saved me a ton of headaches and money too. The clicking sound is so annoying. Mine shuts off if I shut my truck off or if I turn the defrost on. Weird
There are 2 to 3 of those actuators depending on trim level and Air Conditioning options. The one kind of behind glove box. All have this one. Usually first to fail (7 to 10 years) The one above and right of gas pedal. Second to fail ( usually 8 to 11 years). The one centered just over the floor vent. Hardest to access. I have seen 3 ways to get at it. Full dash disassembly or cutting the plastic floor vent in half. One report of being able to pry the vent down enough.
Hi, my truck makes the same noise, and one time I turned to heat, and the air coming out from the vents remain hot, even I turned the knob to cold and turned ac on. I left the knob at cold air, After a day, the cold air came back, does this fix the issue? Or this is actuator to control air from different vents? Thanks.
I have a Platinum with the dual climate. And the passenger side quit blowing hot air. And the defroster as well. I wonder if it’s the same issue. Mine never started making a sound though.
Are there more than one of these on the truck? Mine knocking noise is much slower. Also, when I’m running the air conditioner, it gets warm then ice cold warm then ice cold.
Good job on the video. Got a 2013 F150. not making that noise but more like creeking noise when i go from hot to cold i replace the thermastat. but when i go from heat to ac back to heat. I get no heat. any ideas?
It probably is that same actuator, or the other actuator for the location settings. I know the fancier F150's with the touch screen also have another actuator
I can stop the clicking by turning the temp knob, And mine makes the clicking when I turn the key. Like yours did do you think it's the same one ? Also it stopped clicking. And now it's just blowing cool air, no heat. Do you think it's the problem ?
Sterling; My 2012 F150 recently started making the woodpecker sound behind the dashboard when I start the engine. Your dashboard looks a lot like mine, what year is your truck? I hope I have the same luck as you and only have to remove one single screw.?
sure would be nice if you said which door actuator door you are replacing, upper??lower??? i am currently doing my 2011 and from all the other videos that show where the actuator door is mine is not there is i guess i'll take a look behind the radio.
From what I came to learn. Was that the actual cause of the problem is the blend door itself is sticking. This causes the gears in the actuater to break. You have to get at the blend door and lube or free it up. This is why you need to keep replacing it. Not because of defective actuators. Buy aftermarket or ford. Same thing both parts made in china. Thanks ford. Good luck.
2009 FORD LARIOT F-150 blend door actuator motor fix. are the top and bottom blend door motors the Same or are they difference from each other? Anybody Know for sure about this???
@@fam9242 I can’t think of anything else that could cause it so I thought maybe it was a bad part. Luckily had a warranty but it’s been 3 days and hasn’t knocked once so hoping it fixed it

Buy oem ford parts and you dont have to replace it every year. My truck is an 09 and it just failed. Even if a new one from ford was $125.00 it would be worth it to not have to do this annually.
Auh come on I just done how the hell you got the back bolt out, that is too easy only one bolt removed 😅😅😅 I had to make a special socket with an wrench rachet to remove the back bolt this video doesn't show how you get the back bolt out,and it's not a slide out actuator, you got to joking on this video
