    ok i might have made a small but substantial mistake in this video. you can have more inductors than phases in a VRM, but you can likely not have less inductors than phases in a VRM. so if i ever say this here or in another video it's likely wrong.

    The easiest explanation for the phases is that they are like no of cylinders in car or bike engines. For a given displacement, say - 1000 cc or 1 ltr, you can have a large single cylinder that makes a hell lot of torque but power comes in pulses. Also all components must be very strong and heavy. Or you can have 4 250 cc cylinders that are lighter and power comes in more smooth manner. Similarly, having many phases helps in having switching pulse split over many small intervals. This helps in reducing the size of inductors and MOSFETs and the current they carry. Also, the power delivery is much cleaner with less ripples.

    My first GPU attempt is going to be a 980ti SC I just grabbed and this info is so helpful.

    • @Dandan-tg6tj
      @Dandan-tg6tj Год назад +1

      Please, don't do the 980 Ti. Buy some very cheap video cards and start there. It's impossible to not kill your first 3 or 4 video cards unless there's something very simple to repair and you're super lucky.
      Start with those with a TDP less than 150W. It's easier and if you mess up one of the phases it's basically nothing bad happening (or almost nothing).
      Let the 980 Ti aside for a while. You'll come back to it later. After all it's not going anywhere.
      I understand you already have skill but you need to learn a few things first. Video cards with higher TDP are harder to work on because the dissipation of the heat is much higher when you try to de-solder or solder something on the board.
      Trust me, you need to work out your own set of tools you're comfortable working with. Not all flux is made equal and you will notice that the fake Amtech 223 is better for some work than the original. The original is better for other kind of work. The Amtech 559 V2 is wonderful in combination with a specific kind of soldering wire while for some other kind of soldering wire you may work better with a different kind of flux. To be able to de solder an electrolytic capacitor from a board with a TDP over 200W is a real challenge while de soldering one from a board with only 75W TDP is much, much easier.
      Again, trust me, let the 980 Ti aside for now.
      Hope this helps.

    Thank you for breaking it down so clearly. Appreciate the simple yet thorough explanation and the reasonings. But I had one question that I may have missed(?), what purpose do those mosfet (black chips) /capacitor do? The ones located on left side of the inductors on GTX 980, 980 Ti and 2080.

    • @Wingedmechanic
      @Wingedmechanic 2 года назад +9

      The MOSFETs are basically high speed switches that switches on and off as per the PWM signal from the controller, slicing or chopping the continuous 12 volts DC input power to small spikes of 12 volts. It is passed to inductors which is basically a voltage to current converter. It takes the 12 v low ampere spikes from MOSFET and converts it into 0.8 to 1.3 volt high ampere supply with some ripples. The capacitors connected between this power rail and ground smoothes out the ripples and produces a smooth high current dc voltage for the GPU or memory chip.

    I just jumped down the GPU rabbit hole trying to figure out what is likely causing issues with 2 graphic cards that I just purchased used. Specifically what component is the culprit. They are both AMD cards, a Gigabyte RX 570 4gb and and MSI RX 480 4gb. The 570 will load to windows desktop for about 30 seconds then crash to black screen and restarts the PC to windows BSOD. The 480 will display a brief pink screen for 3 seconds then normal resolution nicely and allows video playback, internet surfing etc until I load Unigine Heaven to test it then it too crashes to black screen. GPUZ sees the RX 480 but will not show voltages, or memory or temps. MSI afterburner won't show specs or allow the sliders to be adjusted. Like it is not being recognized. Both cards have normal BIOS and use the same driver. I used DDU and the RX 480 will not allow new driver to install, not even previous one AMD showed error. I already cleaned them thoroughly with new paste and pads. Could these cards have VRAM or memory controller bad? Should I break out the heat gun? My XFX RX 580 8GB and other AMD cards works great in the same PC.

    You're a great translator, really high-quality material. It's a pity that there are few such materials on the Internet. I came here by accident, looked at it and remembered that he has a very old, non-working N610 2gd3hlp graphics card. I can't find the diagram anywhere on the internet. I made an external inspection. And now I have questions. I will only add that I once received the card from a friend who used a poor quality power supply. I see that two small capacitors are missing. the card has 8 pins on the PCIE output and the other one probably has 11. I don't know if these outputs correspond to the typical PCIE pin arrangement? because then I would have a short circuit on the 3.3V and 12V lines. A bit strange. Another question: how can I determine whether a given capacitor is broken? If it's soldered in, I guess it won't measure anything? How to find and select replacement elements now? How can I know what the value of these elements is without a diagram?
