Ed Calderon of Ed's Mainfesto joins Bob "The Knife Junkie" DeMarco on episode #138 of The Knife Junkie podcast.
Calderon spent over a decade working in counter narcotics, organized crime investigation and public safety in the northern-border region of Mexico, as well as an executive protective agent. His study in to the indigenous Méxican criminal culture, from occult practices to endemic modus operandi have lead him to be recognized as one of the world's preeminent researchers and trainers in the field of personal security that have come out of Mexico.
He shares his expertise with members of federal law enforcement agencies including the FBI and BORTAC, Navy SEALS, Indonesian Kopaska, Mexican and United States intelligence service agents, and members of special forces groups from all over the world. Currently he travels North America doing security consulting and conducting seminars and private training courses in anti-abduction, escapology, unarmed combat, region specific executive protection work and unconventional edged weapons work.
And knife junkies know him from his Elvia knife design -- a tool that Calderon carried as his ultimate back up weapon. The Elvia was a knife that belonged to his mother who used it both as a utility tool and as a weapon, using it to save the lives of her family when they were once attacked by a vicious street criminal. The Elvia is produced by several companies including Emerson Knives and Kopis Designs.

Ed comes across as a humble and very experienced blade man. The fact that he is also open to ongoing learning from other sources makes him even more credible. He is an asset to our blade community as a way to keep us honest about the reality of what we carry and its usefulness. OK, so I'm going out to the garage now and cutting the rings off of all my karambits, LOL! 😎😁👍🔪...
And I ran out and got a Victorinox Fruit knife and made a pocket sheath for it... mostly for fun. Mostly.

Ironically, one of the most important aspects of a ring blade design is the ability to (A) use the blade WITHOUT the ring, and (B) get out of the ring with a simple, repeatable hand motion.
In all seriousness, I don't care about the ring for rentention but for deployment. I find it easier to reach for a ring then to find and grip the handle. Especially with deep carry clips.
Love listening to Ed. Knife extractions- my cousin told me how his dad as a butcher, could stab a pig or cow in the throat & if he wanted, retract the knife without a spot of blood on it. Puzzling to me but impressive to his son. uncle was like 5 ft, 9" but solid muscle from a lifetime of hard work. Born in 1900, he was 70-80 when I knew him. Hickory tough even then. He would backhand slap you in the chest, knock you back a foot. Did prison time for butchering a stolen cow. Such a tough, tough man.

What I asked in the comment I deleted after I saw I already greeted you - was at the 1 hr.5 minute mark maybe you said a name like Rick Lalai? Am I close to the spelling? I own the CQC -7bw and the Super7, have had them since 2011 and 2012 if I remember correctly. Bob - in your opinion - what would be the way to pu a Elvia from Emerson? Is there a secret handshake or "old man's head nod"? Would going 2nd hand be the best choice? I don't collect knives, everyone I own serves a purpose, first it MUST be a good knife to whittle with, that design would be PERFECT for certain woods and certain designs I create, then of course in a last ditch effort to save my life I'd use my knife - I'd be less than smart not to. But I love that design. Thanks for any help you could throw my way. BTW - my name is Gregg. From Cincinnati, Ohio waving a hand. :0)
My son, approached Mr. Emerson at Blade 2017 about an issue with lock stick that many wete returning his knives due to lock stick .
I'd like to see an interview with Ed and Marc Animal Mackyoung. That would be a hell of interview.

one good example of "acceleration" that he mentions: the origins of the glaswegian smile. they'd snip one or two of your cheeks, then they'd kick you in the gut on the ground to make you scream which would then rip your cheeks open and potentially cause death by bleeding.

I respect Ed and I wanna take his courses! I want to say though, he mentioned people who have two blades, one for defense and one for utility. He said that's set up to fail. However, we need context here. If someone has an unrealistic view of how they would use/deploy a defensive blade, then yes it's set up to fail. However if an individual actually tests their defensive blade set up with a good understanding of using only gross motor skills, they can then come up with a reliable solution to deploying a blade under stress. Also combine this with force on force training and learn how to wrestle! 🤙

And Emerson blew him off,he was simply suggesting carbodizing the lock face ,a 1 min. solution to fix the problem. He did this to many knives returned to River's Edge Cutlery, around Columbus,Ohio area.

no the Finns were not vikings, those were the northern germanic peoples that came out of denmark (sweden, norway, iceland). the finns were one of the first to be colonized by the vikings, the russians later. (the land of Rus was founded by viking princes).
Fantastic video!!! Very informative! Knives are a part of California culture as well with having a high Latin Or Mexican population. It was when and were I grew up. Everyone I knew growing up always had a folder or fixed blade. I had a ring on one of my knives with a snaggle tooth, using it to pull the knife out while deploying the blade at the same time until it cut me. I took the ring off. OSHA says that 300 unsafe acts will occur before an accident will happen. Whether it’s the first or the 300th. Well that ring on the knife had been used a hundred times before and on the 101 time it went wrong and right then I knew it wasn’t a safe idea. The ring was the fault because it doesn’t keep the hand out of the path of the blade and it doesn’t hold its position securely behind the knife keeping the hand out of the path of the blade! I have to say, with all the "purpose-driven tactical knives" that appeal to me and that I spend money on to just own, it tickled me to hear him say that about Moras. It also confirmed something I always suspected!
@@TheKnifeJunkie oh trust me, I have a borderline gaudy collection of different EDC blades, but my two go-to blades are my Morakniv and Ka-Bar kukri for outdoors. They are near indestructible for every day purposes!!

He's on pregabalin & morphine due to bullet fragments in face, spine and one leg and, were he lives, you can't sell or use heroin, sinaloa cartel will kill you for it. But if you can guide me to PROOF that I'm wrong, please let me know. Use critical thinking and research next time. Plus, THE CONTRATOR said that he had been addicted to coke in Columbia and he recently beat an alcohol addiction. Fair play to him.

@@Jorge-hg4kl I think that you should do a lot more research than you have done. He has nerve damage from bullet fragments and is prescribed morphine & pregabalin. He was imprisoned for gun running in mexico. He has dual citizenship and no convictions in the US. But most importantly, in Sinaloa, they dont sell junk...you get killed for it. For using it you might get a severe beating then have to leave the state or, just get killed.. I like Ed, but I have talked to Many law enforcement who have told me that its silver or lead all the way. No exceptions. do your research. This is his 4th channel. On his first, he posted the video of him bleeding out in his living room from bullet fragments to leg. Fragments in face After getting out. Plus fragments near spine. Look at the veins in his hands, junkies tend not to have them. Dont just look at the lies his detractors have told. Watch all his vids. If you know of inconsistencies, please share your knowledge with me as I HAVN'T seen any. Kind reguards
@@seanuk7757 silver o lead in Mexico true, however my uncle has opened up to me about his experience in Mexico specifically in Tamaulipas he worked there for approximately 20 years as a police officer for the state with the Policía Ministerial, his experience was that yes corruption is very true and exists just about everywhere however he was able to escape it because he got to chose where he would work and he chose to work in small towns where the cartel had a minimal impact and this way he wasn’t involved in any of the mess that comes along with cooperating with the cartels, he retired a couple of years back so based on his story I believe Ed a lot more than og junkie based in REAL experienced from by uncle.
